We require specialists for a project-based employment. For one of such requests we needed a trusted and professional company that could dedicate a few highly-skilled specialists to our client's project. After some research our choice fell on Roll’n’Code. During our first meeting we discussed our needs, requirements and the project itself. The RNC team was attentive to details and provided us with all the necessary information. After having a few successful interviews with their candidates, we agreed on the ourtstaffing model of work with hourly payment contract.

The specialists were allocated to the project within a few days which allowed us to start the work very fast. I can say that work period was running smoothly, and we was completely satisfied with the results provided by the RNC team members.

I’m currently the project manager and owner of Expert Ready, a software agency that helps local and global businesses manage software projects more efficiently, on time, and on budget.

What challenge were you trying to address with Roll'n'Code?

One of my customers needed to develop a web app for sport ticketing events so that local high schools can sell tickets to patrons during events like football, tennis, and soccer games. Despite the fact that this is typically done at the gate, it has become more and more of a digital experience. 

My client asked me to solicit and find a company that could build this kind of web app. I engaged Roll'n'Code for the first phase of the project, which was developing the initial wireframes and getting all of the project specced out into parts and tasks.

What was the scope of their involvement?

At the outset, we broke the project into two phases. The first phase had a few objectives centered around clarifying features, the look and feel, and experience. We took all of the learnings from phase zero and moved into phase one, during which we developed based on the project management plan we came up with.

We provided them with the project brief. It generally described what we were trying to accomplish, the value behind it for my client, the timeline we wanted to achieve, who was running the project, and stakeholders' information. Throughout the first phase, they provided us with a business analyst, and there were several times they needed to do their own research to understand the problem we wanted to solve. 

What is the team composition?

There were three people in total. Two were very active, and the third one was the account manager. My main point of contact was their CEO.

How did you come to work with Roll'n'Code?

I worked with their CEO on another similar project about two years ago. From that experience, I decided to reach back out to her to get an idea of the costs it might take for them to help me with this project. The cost fit what we were trying to achieve, which is why I selected them to be the service provider for this project.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I've worked in software development for 10 years and 20 years total in IT and technical responsibilities, so I’ve had a lot of experience with various development companies over the years. Still, I was very impressed with the professionalism that Roll'n'Code brought to the table. Their team was highly rigorous in their thought process of defining project tasks and outcomes. They were also very willing to both provide information and accept feedback, which was a big win for me. 

You can have very talented people that don’t want to share or receive feedback, and although they’re very talented, that stifles the progress. The biggest value that Roll'n'Code provided me with was the great experience of being able to both give and receive feedback with a good level of talent. 

How did Roll'n'Code perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management was probably my favorite part, since it was surprisingly good. Typically, I’d work with teams that may organize things in one way that works for them, but Roll'n'Code seemed to go a little further than that. They had an internal process and used Jira to manage their own team, but then when it came to conversations with me as a client, they used a more simplified version to help me understand. They came to my level and broke the project, the hours, and the tasks down, making it something palpable and easy to work with. For our conversations, we used Google Sheets; although that seems very rudimentary, it actually worked really well. 

We mainly did weekly calls, and we’d email back and forth. Our third form of communication was Google Docs, in which I provided updates and answers to questions they had. They’d write comments and reply in the same document, and we’d give them some sources, like additional graphic elements, logos, and others. This made it really easy and valuable for me throughout the process, highlighting the content directly there. I liked it because it helped us stay organized and in context with what they wanted. That way it didn’t get lost in emails somewhere, which could be really frustrating.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Roll'n'Code stood out for their attention to detail and refreshing project management. From my experience, it can be hard to find this. Even in my own level of work, they inspired me to step up my game, evolve, and keep improving. Through what they were doing, I looked at my own techniques and took some notes from their work. 

Furthermore, the pricing was good. Before I reached out to them, I did some market research and reached out to two other agencies I was familiar with. I was leaning toward another service provider, but their minimum project size for both phases neared a six-figure cost, and it was hard to commit to a 100% guarantee from a client’s side. Roll'n'Code had a lower minimum to start with, and their hourly range was great. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

As a provider who’s willing to work on your project for a lower rate than other typical firms, Roll'n'Code service is a win, but the design is a little lacking. They could go further and improve their skills in that area to improve their quality. As a senior project manager, my responsibility was to supplement with some of my own contacts and bring that level up, and we did it. 

Overall, we ended up on top, but having a little bit better design ability would’ve given me a further advantage, which is why I’d like to see them evolve in that area.

Any advice for potential customers?

It helps to be prepared for what you're expecting and have a very clear picture of what you want to succeed. I wouldn’t think that a project could turn out well if you just delivered instructions on what you want them to build and ask them to come back in six months with a happy result. I have high doubts you’d be happy when they came back to you, which is why it’s important to be invested. 

In that sense, my advice would be to be invested and present in the project, show up to the meetings, make sure you're available for feedback, and be able to give well-thought-out and good-quality feedback to their team. If you do that, then you're going to get your money's worth. If you don't, you're going to be losing stuff on the table.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Our solution successfully passed the test period at our client's production facility. No issues were discovered with the code during the technical review. We now have a green light for commercial deployment at the facility.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Working with Roll'n'Code was almost as seamless as an internal development team. Overall, we didn’t have any problems with their communication.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Daily operations were as good as with our own development team.

Are there any areas for improvement?

I’d like to see them implement better additional costs control. Sometimes we missed a signal that certain feedback or changes from our side would add additional costs to the project.

As a startup, we needed to build a platform according to our business model. The application would have a customer- and client-facing side to connect the two and enable payment transfers.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Roll’n’Code developed an iOS platform from scratch. Since this was our first time building an app, the team guided through the process and advised us on simplicity for the minimum viable product (MVP). They built the API, logic, and payment functionalities. We have an Android version planned for the future.

After writing out a brief description of our idea, we put out an advertisement to which numerous vendors responded. What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in late 2017 and the iOS app launched in September 2018. Although the app’s release marks the end of the project, Roll’n’Code will be working on additional testing and tweaks for six months after the official November 2018 launch. We also have a list of additional features that we’d like to roll out over the next year. More than likely, we’ll be back with Roll’n’Code to develop those, as well as the Android application.

They completed successfully completed the project in five or six sprints.

How did Roll’n’Code perform from a project management standpoint?

They performed well, but in late 2017 the process wasn’t as smooth as we would have liked. We had to move to another project manager’s team due to turnover. The new project manager had a thorough and methodical approach. We knew where we stood with her and how that project was developing.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Throughout the project, they were communicative and willing to try new things. The team had the expertise to conduct additional research and help us learn about the process during the build. Occasionally, we suggested particular software or platforms and Roll’n’Code either accommodated our ideas or followed-up with additional information. They also accommodated us whenever we had a question or deviated slightly from the project plan.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The language barrier affected ideation in the project’s early stages. It took a bit of time to get on the same page. We could’ve been a bit clearer, but, at the same time, so could have Roll’n’Code. That being said, everything else from January 2018 onward was structured and smooth. I would definitely work with them again.

Mappiah Consulting is a consulting and technology company. Our customers range from governments to technology companies. I’m senior director in charge of business development and specific initiatives in the European and North African market.

What challenge were you trying to address with Roll’n’Code?

We needed help with a proof of concept project. We didn’t want to execute a full-blown project only to not have it work.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They helped from the design to the implementation stage. We selected a feature of the project, had them execute the proof of concept to test, verified it, and authenticated it so that if we scale it, it won’t be a problem. They helped us in that whole process, which was completed in June 2017.

At the beginning of 2018, they started executing the production version of the ecosystem for mining and commodity-based companies. It’s a marketplace for mining companies and commodity suppliers all over the world to exchange services. It’s a very close-knit and consistent way they could trade with each other. It supports nearly 50 billion transactions every day.

There’s a program manager and a project manager. They interface with our program manager. They have about 20 software developers, designers, and quality engineers.

We met them at a startup event. They pitched their expertise and capabilities to us and we decided to give them a try.

They provided a great deal of value. They executed the project in an agile way, with a good level of skill. The first milestone is in the test phase and it’s going well. Our project manager’s reports have been nothing but positive.

They have their own project management software and our project is put into milestones.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re amazingly professional, have a bit of entrepreneurial drive, and pay attention to excellence. Our relationship with them is very good. They do all they can to provide value to us.

My project manager said that initially there were communication issues due to language differences, but they were able to overcome those issues.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Give them a chance. Do a proof of concept and decide from there. From my experience, it’s been phenomenal.

We talked with a few domestic and international software houses. The process involved product discussions, example sprint estimation, cost estimations, and portfolio assessments. Roll’n’Code was among the best options we found.

After we explained the idea behind our product, we discussed a plan for long-term updates that we wanted to follow. Then, we concentrated on executing the first update and estimated each element in the sprint. Both parties accepted the sprint and estimations, and everything has been executed without any issues.

I am the CEO of a startup that monitors air pollution for smart cities. We work with municipalities around Europe, with a focus on the Nordics, to measure, assess, and tackle air pollution in urban settlements.

Our company website did not represent our identity. Since we set it up ourselves using available templates, its design was limited. It did not convey what our company represents, stands for, and works for. Our visual identity was also very undefined because we were in the early stages of development. We basically had to start from scratch.

What were your goals for this project?

We wanted our website to represent visually what IntelFlows is about, what we do, and for whom we do it. We also wanted to give users the option to create accounts and manage their solutions. In addition to the website, we needed to use the visual elements in other materials.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

Our team posted ads looking to hire an in-house designer. When we couldn’t find an appropriate candidate, we began researching and approaching companies that provide such services. Out of the seven companies contacted, three qualified to fulfill our technical requirements and price point. The decision was rather easy since the staff at Roll'n'Code, Anastasiia especially, showed high interest in our project. They were prompt in their replies and provided excellent customer care, concluding our search and making the decision easy.

After we decided to start the project, we had a series of discovery calls with the Roll'n'Code team. They showed great support and understanding, especially considering that our requests were not clearly defined and that we needed their creative input. After finalizing this stage, they began updating us as soon as they finished a part of the website. We provided feedback when necessary, which wasn't often, and they implemented it immediately. The updated version sent by Roll'n'Code was always right on target. They finalized the project within the proposed timeline.

After viewing the new website, our investors, partners, and customers were pleased with the new presentation of the business and showed great support. Moreover, new customers have pointed to the quality of the website as one of the impressive things about our business.

The communication between us and the Roll’n’Code team was spotless, painless, and straightforward. Besides keeping us continually updated on their progress, they have replied quickly to new requests and implemented them accordingly. We are extremely pleased with their communications.

I was impressed by the energy, dedication, and knowledge that the team members showed. Their patience and ability to understand our unclear requests made everybody's life easier.

I’m the founder and owner of SurgeonIDEAS, LLC. One branch of my company does rapid prototyping and intellectual property for medical instruments. The other limb of the company does medical education development, i.e., websites, programming, and apps.

What challenge were you trying to address with Roll'n'Code?

We usually hire out our programmers and Roll’n’Code is the consultant we used to help with the programming. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They did our iOS and iPhone app. The app we hired them to build is called RVSL, an acronym for “reversal.” It’s a professional medical app aimed at providing quick and up-to-date information to providers about how to reverse the effects of drugs that can cause bleeding. Often, patients will come into a clinic and they are bleeding to death because of an injury and a medication they are taking. Medical professionals have to quickly figure out what they need to give the patient to stop the bleeding. Every region and every hospital is a little bit different. General guidelines exist, but there can be many differences between individuals. Because they were so good, we’re planning on using Roll’n’Code to do the Android app as well.

We also have a website that we run called brainandspineschool.com, which is a free, Wikipedia-type encyclopedia for neurosurgery. In the future, we’re looking at having them help with the search engine optimization. We also want them to clean up the website a bit so the interface is easier to use and the search functionality is better. These changes would make the site a little more customizable per user.

How did you come to work with Roll'n'Code?

It was happenchance that I found Roll’n’Code. I saw them listed with good reviews on another website—I can’t remember which one—and gave them a call. They fit every niche I was looking to fill. I was happy I found them.

I first contacted a local company to see how much it would cost to develop an app. I approached them with the whole manuscript already written and there was nothing that needed to be done on the developer’s side besides the programming. When I spoke to the local company, they were asking for $20,000 to $30,000, and I thought that was crazy. If you went the freelance route, the project could have been even more affordable. I can't say that would have been better, because I don't know how the timeline and that relationship would have been, but there were more affordable ways to do it. Their price was just as affordable as the companies in India, but the language barriers there were more difficult to overcome.

We’ve paid about $3,000 for their services.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project itself took about 3 months. We started around July and ended in late September, which is the timeframe they had given me. They were on time. Everything was good there.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

Roll’n’Code came up with a lot of good ideas that made the app more customizable for users. They thought to add a notes section to every page. On top of the pre-existing text, a person can add information such as “At our hospital we use X,” or “Call X to get Y.” That way, they’re building specific algorithms and a contact book within the app. Roll’n’Code also had the idea of including a highlight function on the pages, which gives both novices and experienced users the opportunity to jump straight to the highlighted portions without having to read the entire page. Roll’n’Code helped build a couple of dosing algorithms. I provided them with the equations and the app calculates the strength of a given drug. They also included a nice search function that helps users filter through a list of 50 or 60 drugs. If a user clicks “Search” and types in “A,” for instance, the app will list every drug that starts with an A below it. Those are some of the big functionality features that made us happy.

How did Roll'n'Code perform from a project management standpoint?

Roll’n’Code was forthcoming and communicative about the project’s status. We had no problems or difficulty with understanding each other. They stayed in touch with weekly emails and Skype calls. Usually, there was at least 1 Skype call at the beginning of the week, and then sometimes another at the end of the week. The Skype conversations always were followed up with an email that summarized the call to make sure that they knew exactly what they were doing. That way, they could give the developers the correct information. To show the progress of the app, they had me download something where I could see the working app in progress and make comments on it.

There was never a concern over time changes and they were always accommodating. I’m a physician, so if my schedule on a given day didn't allow me to be free until 6 PM, someone from Roll’n’Code would call me from their home late at night. It was pretty impressive. Eventually, I started feeling bad because they were doing that a lot, so I'd get up even earlier and do it for them. They were very nice that way.

The payments were dependent upon them getting things done. For instance, if at the end of this week they are to the point they said they would be, then they would get paid. But if not, then it will drag on. That was kind of an interesting way of doing it. I appreciated it. It made it feel more honest.

What did you find most impressive about Roll'n'Code?

I would say that the thing that I was happiest with would be the fact that they completely understood and appreciated the need for my idea, and they only made it better. They were vested in the development of the idea. They weren’t there to change it or make it easier for them to build it. Rather, they were there to make the idea evolve.

Are there any areas Roll'n'Code could improve?

Looking back on it, I don't have any complaints. The only thing would be that they don't have a company in the States, but that’s not a huge deal breaker. I like to go to places in person—that’s why I looked locally first—but then I realized that wasn’t going to happen.

We’re a small development firm. On occasion, when we need technology that we don’t have the technical skills for, we need to look elsewhere. We tend to go offshore.

What challenge were you trying to address with Roll’n’Code?

It was for a PHP framework called Kohana which is not commonly used locally. We don’t have any Kohana developers internally. We needed work done in a short amount of time. We didn’t want to hire someone for one project. It’s better to hire contractors. They also have tools in iOS and Android and API development. This project made use of all of them.

How did you come to work with Roll’n’Code?

They had experience in the framework we needed, but also additional languages that might come in handy in the future.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them earlier this year - around May. The contract is still open with them. There was a big burst of work and now it’s ad hoc support on the same project. Sometimes they have to make minor changes.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

The project is in production. In addition to that project, we hired them for something else that came up that was quite urgent. It was another project that we needed help with and they were able to do it. It was an Android app. We hadn't hired them for Android development, but they were able to help. They’re a professional outfit. They treat their customers well and maintain good communication.

How did Roll’n’Code perform from a project management standpoint?

I only deal with the project manager. I’m accustomed to dealing with the developers. That was a shift for me and I liked it. Their project managers are quicker to deal with customers than developers are. If they are presented with a question they don’t know, they get with the developers and get back with you. They’re also very fluent in English. They try to match work times with you so they’re available for you. Even outside of those hours, they keep Skype running so you can send them messages.

They’ve been very transparent and open and maintain communication well. Even if they don’t have an update, they send me a message to let me know they’ll get me an update later. They’re reasonably priced and fair in their pricing. If they work an hour and a quarter they’ll charge you for that - not two hours.

What did you find most impressive about Roll’n’Code?

Just having the project management resources in place is something that not a lot of companies have. Their project managers understand the customers and they make an effort to understand the project. The development work is very good as well.

Are there any areas Roll’n’Code could improve?

It would be nice to have work turned around faster, but I understand they have other clients. They can’t prioritize everyone. I’ll continue to use them. They did what I hired them to do and they did it well.

We are Digital Mavericks. What we do is basically develop projects for our own ideas. We also do some agency work and some outsourcing work for people that approach us. Primarily, we're doing our own stuff for our own ideas and our own projects. They're all IT related: software development, web-based software, and mobile apps. In general, I'm always looking to find teams that feel vested in the project - that actually care about it and not view it as another job to just get it out the door and not really care about the lifespan of it or the actual business idea behind it. I think they [Roll'n'Code] are pretty good at understanding the business idea behind the work. They keep asking the right questions, picking up perhaps some of the things I might miss myself. That's what I'm always looking for, someone who actually feels like and acts as if they're an owner in the project, and not just an outsourced team.

It's primarily been mobile apps so far: iOS and Android development. We're starting to get into some other things now. I'm getting them to quote them. They've actually done some design work for me as well.

They've been doing a little bit of UI/UX [user interface/user experience] design. I've been driving that. They've made some suggestions, which when I've prompted them to actually make some suggestions, they've generally been pretty good. They're active in making UI suggestions. When they do make input, they're generally on the spot.

I found them through Upwork, formerly oDesk. They're in the Ukraine. They've had some good success there in working with the right partners. That was attractive to me. Their bid wasn't overly competitive or anything like that.

We have been working with them about six months, maybe a little bit longer. It may even be close to a year. We got started actually, by doing some design work. Primarily, it's been mobile app development since then.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

My partner has been happy with the code of several of the projects. In one case, we had a project that was basically just outsourced for a colleague. They're very happy with it.

I find that when we deliver a detailed specification, they hit the mark pretty well. I'm happy with that. That's why I'm actually starting to pursue larger projects with them, to get them to quote out some larger corporate projects that we have coming down the pipeline here to see if they're going to be able to deliver on those. That's the next level of what I'm considering them for.

How did Roll'n'Code perform from a project management standpoint?

They are good. There's one point of contact which is always nice. They're aware of everything - the history of the project and everything related to it. It's more of a project manager, not a technical person. I would say that parts have been pretty good. Maybe in the future, in bigger projects, I'll need a little bit more interaction with team leads in development. For now, it's just primarily been on Skype with the project manager.

They're working in terms of hours and their availability. I'm not sure exactly how many people they have on their team. I think it's over 30 or 40. That could change. I'm not quite sure.

What did you find most impressive about Roll'n'Code?

I think their logic in developing the code is very good. You can outsource things and the logic is just God-awful. One bug pops up and then it has a ripple effect and causes another. You fix that, and two other bugs pop up. It just goes to the kind of architecture and the logic behind the basis of what they're doing.

We've all been through that in software development, and these horror stories in outsourcing with bad logic and bad architecture are known to happen. Once they understand a project, I think their architecture and the basis of the frameworks that they put together are pretty good.

Are there any areas Roll'n'Code could improve?

I think all programming teams need to be better testers. I have yet to meet a good programming team that also tested their stuff very well. We're always testing, and finding things, and fixing things for every programming team that we work for. I think that's something that they could improve upon.
