Pixune produced the opening intro film for Gravity, the first game on our Scape platform. It is the story players see when they start the game for the first time: a prologue of roughly a minute and three quarters that sets up the world and ends at the gate into Scape. Our own art team painted the illustrations, and Pixune turned them into a 2.5D parallax film. We supplied eight layered plates, a fourteen-frame storyboard, the script and a timing sheet. Pixune took it from there: setting the plates up in After Effects, building a full animatic to lock timing and camera before production, animating the camera moves through the layered artwork, adding frame-by-frame animation where the story needed real motion (our climber’s reframe and the pebbles disturbed by her final leap), handling minor plate clean-up with their own concept artist, casting and recording the English voice over from samples we chose between, and editing the whole piece to our music and sound mix. Their lead animator, Hesam Javaheri, led the work. Key deliverables were a 21:9 master at 4K width, a 16:9 version, a timed subtitle cue sheet so the game can show subtitles in every language, the voice over recordings with talent releases, and the complete After Effects project with all source files. The schedule was tight: our plates landed in early September and we needed the finished film by the end of the month for our October launch.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

The clearest measure is that the film is finished and in the game. It is the first thing every player sees when they start Gravity, and Pixune delivered it on time, against a deadline several other studios had declined to even start on. The quality is something we are proud to open our game with, and the team brought their own ideas to it rather than simply executing the brief. They also kept us informed throughout, usually before we had a chance to ask, which meant the project took very little of our time to manage.

What stood out most was how much ownership they took. From the first conversation, Pixune treated the film as if it were their own project rather than a job to deliver to spec. They looked for ways to make shots better, solved small problems on their side instead of stopping the work to send them back to us, and were open with us about how they planned to do things before they did them. That combination is rare: real craft at the level of an animator like Hesam, together with a practical, no-drama way of working that respects a client’s time and deadline. It made them feel less like a vendor and more like an extension of our own team.

Not really. They delivered what they promised, on time, and kept us informed the whole way. If anything, my advice to other clients would be to bring them in as early as possible, because their input during planning added real value, and the earlier you have it, the more of it you can use.

We had to rig several 3D models for three of our games. They did an amazing job meeting high-quality standards and turnaround times, not to mention their support in implementing the rigs during the animation stage. The job was done well and quickly, which helped us deliver our game on schedule.

We manage to release our steam page for one of the games. Also maintain the schedule and quality for the other 2 games that will be released later this year. Without their help none of those releases would be possible.

• The greatest measurable outcome of the success of using this studio is that I continue to use them for the design needs that keep coming up for my company.

They're very responsive. I communicate via Discord with their rep and he always gets back to me quickly and the deliverables are always on time, and often earlier than I expected, while maintaining quality.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

There's an old saying that when it comes to hiring people/services, you can look for people that deliver on time, or high-quality, or affordable... but it's hard to find people who do all three. In the case of Pixune, I feel like I have all three. They were very on-time, their work quality was very good, and they were very affordable. I've been very happy with them, which is why I give them work that sometimes falls outside the scope of the original reason I contacted them (game design).

We were looking to build on our Shoestring Initiative, which encourages kids to Lace'em Up and Be ACTIVE. So we created Laci, design by an elementary student. We didn't really know how to go about making this happen.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

I wanted to look into freelancing to get the job done. During my search I discovered Upwork. After creating the job post, Masoud Lak reach out to me, and I viewed the company work attached. I like what I saw, but I wasn't sure if this company would be the best fit or had the integrity to fulfill my request. However, Masoud was easy to talk to and helped to transition me smoothly.

First, I provided clarification on who Laci represented. We wanted to stay within the pre submitted design created by an elementary student. We discussed the short- and long-term plans for this character. Next, we were provided drafted images to choose from. Laci needed specific things; she was an African American little girl with glasses, she was cool and fun to be with. Step by step was smooth transitions with the design team lead by Reza. We discussed specific items, such as her hair being natural, a part down the middle with 2 afro puffs, the color of her skin tone, the color dynamics of her as a shoe and so many other details.

No deliverables as of yet with the use of Laci.

Whenever I needed to make a modification to the design submitted to me the team was willing to make those changes with no problems.

What intrigued me initially was the videos provided. Then I was able to witness my character Laci come to life.

After few back and forth, I knew Pixune will be perfect for the job. They were listening carefully to any of my request. Their portfolio was great and show how skilled they are.

We discussed the brief with both video calls and e-mails. Then they sent me draft of characters (one by one). I gave them my feedback. Then I received the color key draft. Once chosen, the color key was processed. The end result is just mind blowing !

I worked with 2 people @ Pixune : 1 account executive and 1 project manager. Communication was clear and professionnal (and friendly) ending up in a great experience overall.

To demonstrate how good they are, we had issues to tackle expressions on some characters and the outfit of another. They send drafts untill I was completely satisfied!

Our company produce the highest quality of collector and gaming accessories. That same high degree of quality we needed for a 30 seconds video material, launching a new innovative product.

We had performed previously produced video material inhouse. Now we wanted to investigate the opportunity of producing even higher quality animation for our brand. Needless, to say it wasn't easy finding reliable studios we trusted or found cost effective. We sourced PIXUNE STUDIOS and discussed how to produce a high quality animated video with a fantasy themed storyline.

What were your goals for this project?

Our main objective for this project was to find a studio capable to produce a cost efficient though high level animation video.

How did you select Pixune Studios?

Our team searched online and found Pixune Studios that we decided to proceed with inspite already having domestic suppliers identified. One of the main reasons we chose Pixune Studios was their genuine interest in our project and our company.

They understood who we are as a company and why we wanted to create a project that would be recognized in the industry. Pixune Studios gave fruitful feedback in the initial process and critically engaged our thought on the project and came with solutions throughout the process.

Pixune Studios not only produced the animation video but equally as important was very flexible in the process and at the same time consulted us if we were heading in a direction with more cost associated with our ambitions for the video. In this regard, we ended if with a very satisfying result (video) with minor teaks during the process - assisted by our PM and primary contact in Pixune.

What was your vendors' project management or feedback process?

Yes. The PM at Pixune was actually eager to keep the project moving forward which was very much appreciated. First our discussions were handled by account manager and later handed over to project manager. Handover occured smoothly.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Result being the quality of the video is to our satisfaction. We needed minor tweaks during the last part of the video production and the Pixune team performed them quickly and with no friction.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Workflow was very efficient. Flexible meeting setups and frequent calls assured progress in the production. If you as a client can make quick decisions, Pixune is great to work with.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Turn-around times. We had some minor changes we need to be made to the video which was executed quickly. Also, the cost vs. quality makes it possible for us to create videos we in other cases may not have proceeded with.

Are there any areas for improvement?

It may be asking for a lot - but even more feedback on idea generation would always be appreciated. We did however recieve input - some we chose to implement some we didn't.

What were your goals for this project?

Our goal was to produce a ‘world class’ animated music video at a reasonable cost.

SOLUTION

How did you select Pixune Studios?

After contacting many animation studios in both Canada and the US, it became apparent to us that a ‘high quality’ ‘world class’ animated music video could not be produced for the budget that we had in mind. Poland based Pixune Studios was the only company that could produce what we wanted within the necessary budget.

Describe the video(s) and the process in detail.

The song ‘Serve’ is a song about women’s empowerment and gay rights. Eveta and his squad of four girls of different ethnic backgrounds fly to the moon and plant the gay flag on its surface and then come back to earth. This scenario was written by the artist, Eveta, and brought to life by the very talented artists of Pixune Studios.

What was your vendors' project management or feedback process?

The vendor could at all times be easily reached through WhatsApp. Pixune Studios representative, Arvin, was always responsive and open to making any desired changes and/or improvements.

The video has yet to be released to the general public. When it does get released, we hope to get millions of views on YouTube.

Given the complexities of operating during a worldwide pandemic, our project did incur a bit of a delay but in the end, the quality of the product delivered was beyond our expectations.

We did a character rendering project before and it was a smooth operation and we ended up with nice characters provided with a good budget. That's why I decided to hire them again for the development

Since it's a sample game it does not have an acutal impact. But since it has no bugs and I have an acutal game to try. This will give a whole idea on how the full game will look like in the future

From my side I only provided the requirement. But the project was done three weeks before the deadline so obviously it was very effective and organized

I like how they suggest better/alternative ways to certain aspects of the project. They also require no hand holding from the client and can easily complete tasks without going back and asking questions about every little thing

I am the CEO and co-founder of a company providing video games to kids with speech therapy needs.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Pixune?

Our games require flashcards that prompt kids so that they can attempt the specific words at the right time. We needed professional illustrations for those flashcards, so we looked for an illustration company to provide that for us.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The main portion of the project was delivering the actual illustrations. We provided them with our list of words and pictures from our video game so that they would understand the context of the illustrations, and then they provided jpeg files of what they drew up for each of those so that we could import them into our video games.

When we started working with them, they provided some different sample images from previous projects they had worked on which helped us to determine the pricing and quality as well as style that we wanted. From there, we had an iterative process for commenting on some of the designs in case there was any feedback or changes we wanted to make for the final versions.

What is the team composition?

Our team had a primary point of contact with whom we messaged, but I’m not sure how many artists they had working on the project in total. If I had to guess, I would say 2–3, but I can’t say for sure.

How did you come to work with Pixune?

We found them through Upwork originally, where we put out a bid and they sent us a good proposal. We had an initial phone conversation with them and decided to use them for the flashcards because of their skill and capacity to handle such a large number of items.

How much have you invested with them?

The total cost was around $3,000–$4,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our work together ran from about September 2019–May 2020.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The illustrations really were exactly what we were looking for. They also took feedback very well, so even in the cases where the drawings weren’t already perfect, we were able to get there relatively easily by working together.

How did Pixune perform from a project management standpoint?

They were very prompt in their responses, usually getting back to us within an hour despite the time difference between the US and Eastern Europe. I always felt like I could get any questions or issues I had taken care of promptly, which was great.

What did you find most impressive about them?

There would be occasional breaks in communication when they were designing a group of cards, but we would always hear back from them for feedback when they were ready or earlier if they had any questions about any specific words. They really worked with us to make sure we were satisfied and that we fell within budget and timelines at all times.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We really didn’t have any problems working with them. The whole process was very smooth and successful.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

The more you can provide guidance on specific concepts you have for more abstract illustrations, the faster they will be able to turn them around to you because they won’t have to guess what you are going for there. It’s something they’re happy to do, but if you want to move a little bit faster, the more guidance you can give, the better.
