Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm the CMO of a company that offers a sports and fitness application. We're based in South Africa and the Middle East.

What challenge were you trying to address with Pixel Tech?

We had been working with an app development company in South Africa, but the process had been going on for almost two years, and we were nowhere near finishing the app. There were constant problems with it, and in the end, we just had to cut ties.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Pixel Tech has rebuilt our app and migrated it over to a different platform. The team has replicated our app on a new platform while retaining the same design. Pixel Tech has launched our app, which is available for iOS and Android devices.

What is the team composition?

Aman (Founder & CEO) is my main point of contact. I know that 5–6 developers are working on different areas of the app, although I don't speak to developers individually.

How did you come to work with Pixel Tech?

Pixel Tech was recommended by a friend I had worked with in the UK. My friend has a startup and had developed an app with Pixel Tech, which had a lot of similarities with ours, and although the style was different, I noticed the functionality was there from looking at it. My friend's app was quick, and the development was finished very quickly, so we decided to try the team. 

When I contacted Aman, we hadn't signed a contract, and within a week, he rebuilt our app at a basic level and delivered a rough mock-up. The app wasn't fully built, but the team showed us what could be achieved, and we decided to go with them. Pixel Tech also offered a fraction of the price our previous service provider promised us.

How much have you invested in them?

We've spent around £25,000 (approximately $33,000 USD) in the initial investment, which is a fixed cost. We also pay a monthly hosting and maintenance fee of around $3,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Pixel Tech in September 2023, and our engagement is ongoing. Although the app has been launched, we'll continue to work with Pixel Tech on an ongoing basis for new developments or changes required.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Pixel Tech has produced the app that we asked for. We started creating this app three years ago and had several corporate partnerships in line to purchase it. The previous service provider took so long that our partnerships fell. We had to restart our marketing efforts and reach out to those partnerships again. We haven't had a lot of downloads, just a couple hundred. 

When we worked with the previous service provider, our app had many issues with loading time because it had lots of videos and imagery. Workouts weren't saving, and we saw several glitches. Our previous service provider had 1–2 developers working on the app, and the process was very slow. Pixel Tech has used a different platform to build the app, and it's now much slicker and quicker. 

How did Pixel Tech perform from a project management standpoint?

Pixel Tech's main difference from our previous engagement is in terms of speed, communication, and price. We were seriously burned on our first experience, which was so expensive, and we got nothing out of it. Pixel Tech's communication is excellent and very responsive. Anytime we see something in the app that needs fixing, the team is very responsive and does it immediately.

The initial project has been completed so quickly, and when we need changes or updates, Pixel Tech is on it straight away. The team has very competitive pricing and is very flexible. Our project was originally a six-week fixed contract. The project has taken a bit longer, around eight weeks, but considering we had just come out of a two-year engagement, I wasn't too worried about it. The timeline took longer because I was very picky and went through every detail.

We have regular calls with Pixel Tech every week and sometimes daily via Google Meet. We have team calls, and I also communicate regularly with Aman via WhatsApp. I can pick up the phone and call the team at any time.
Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

Aman is great and works around the clock with me. He's available on WhatsApp 24/7, even though he's based in India and I'm in the UK. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

When we were looking to change our service providers, we contacted other companies, but they were larger organizations and more expensive. We liked the idea of working with a small boutique agency because we're also a small company, and the work process is different. Pixel Tech is very responsive. Not every larger company will agree to communicate through WhatsApp, for instance, but I requested Pixel Tech. 

I imagine other companies would want things more formalized, whereas we didn't. I really liked that side of Pixel Tech and that aspect of communication.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can't think of anything Pixel Tech could improve. I've been looking for other companies, and our project has worked out how I wanted it to. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I've already recommended Pixel Tech to a couple of companies. The team is perfect for small businesses and startups. I'd recommend Pixel Tech to any company; however, I've worked with larger corporations of 600 employees, and the process of developing an app is very different. Pixel Tech is clear, easy to work with, and flexible.

The scope was very broad, but what was great was how we were listen to in terms of what we wanted and our specific outcomes in providing an app that served our customers. There were many versions that were created before the final version was released. We were supported every step of the way and we ended up with a world-class app that helped a lot of people make positive changes in their life. Every area of what we asked for was delivered on. It was exceptional.
