Introduce your business and what you do there. 

I’m the director of branded entertainment for InsideHook. We’re a men's lifestyle website. We give recommendations about travel, liquor, cars, fashion, and things to do in our local cities. I work with advertisers to produce custom content for our audience.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Pan Up Productions? 

We had a campaign that included a video component. We needed help to produce a short form social video for our client.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement? 

Our in-house team worked through the concept and scripting for the video. The creative director, myself, and another team member did the creative conception, storyboarding, and the scripting based on the plan that we'd agreed upon with the client. Pan Up Productions came in to help us execute the plan. They shot and edited the video. They also provided creative input to help bring the vision that we’d already established to life. 

The concept for the video was about decoding clothing labels. The goal was to educate our audience on what different symbols on the labels mean, proper clothing care, and how to look for cotton versus synthetics.

What is the team composition?

They supplied a team of four: a director, a director of photography, as well as lighting and sound technicians. 

How did you come to work with Pan Up Productions?

They're actually friends of mine. They’d relocated to New York from Austin. We were in the process of bidding out a couple of other production companies when I reached out to them. Another friend hired them to shoot video footage at an experiential event. She had great things to say about them. They came in within budget, so we decided to go with them. 

How much have you invested with them?

The original quote to shoot and edit the video came in under $10,000. We ended up going a little over because of additional revision requests from the client, which were out of Pan Up Productions’ control.

What is the status of this engagement? 

The project took place between June–July 2018.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We’re very happy with the way the video turned out. We distributed it across our social platforms, and it delivered in full on what we’d promised to the client. We’re pleased with the results. Pan Up Productions was great to work with. My whole team quickly agreed that we'd love to work with them again. We probably will use them in the future if we can find the right project. 

How did Pan Up Productions perform from a project management standpoint?

Generally, the way we work is that our creative director serves as the director of our video shoots. The director from Pan Up Productions was really great about taking a step back and giving our creative director the floor to direct. He also knew when to jump in with insightful ideas about how to shoot different things that we weren't sure about or thoughts on how to make a shot more dynamic.

Also, their director of photography kept us on the ball in terms of staying within the timeline throughout the day. That was great because video shoots tend to spiral out of control, especially in terms of going over the allotted time. They were diligent about staying on task, which was much appreciated. I’ve not seen that level of detail on other video shoots before.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re so patient and accommodating. We had them shoot the video at our office. We had just moved into new offices, and my team was unfamiliar with the building. They helped us figure out how to get all the equipment upstairs, which was much appreciated. Then when we had the unexpected changes, they worked with us to figure out how to accommodate the extra rounds of edits. They gave us a fair price and worked within our timeline, even though we asked for a tight turnaround. They were able to deliver on everything. 

Are there any areas they could improve? 

No, we’re really happy with the outcome. I don't have any constructive criticism to provide. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers? 

Lay out exactly what your deliverables are and what you need from them upfront. Be really thorough about goals, and have realistic timelines. They’re great at making a preconceived vision come to life. I can't speak to their ability to flesh out a half-formed idea, but I would love to try that with them.

We needed help producing a large internal year-in-review video project that was shown to internal teams and clients.

What were your goals for this project?

We wanted to showcase our metrics, as well as the impact we had on local communities and our fan base.

Pan Up Productions bid competitively against two other vendors. In addition to the quality of their work, we chose them because they had an excellent attitude and showed a strong commitment to working with us throughout the project.

Describe the video(s) and the process in detail.

We provided the scope of what we wanted to accomplish and who would be viewing the video. Pan Up Productions handled the advance preparation, set up the shoot, and did all the post-production including editing and visual effects.

What was your vendors' project management or feedback process?

They provided a timeline that we signed off on. It included dates for when they would deliver cuts and how many revisions and rounds of feedback we would provide. I provided support for the project and acted as the internal liaison between our teams.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The final video was excellent. Both our internal team and our clients were very happy with the overall product. We had great engagement and feedback, which led to additional conversations around future projects.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

We had very open and fluid lines of communication with Pan Up Productions. They provided detailed follow-up emails from phone calls. They asked great questions regarding specific elements that we were looking to include.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

The quality of their work was matched by the dynamic personalities on their team.

None, they were a great team to work with.

I am an account director at a marketing strategy firm that focuses on creating branded experiences for our clients. I oversee the strategy, design, and execution of various projects for specific brands.

We hired Pan Up Productions to shoot and edit content at a one-night promotional event for a vehicle brand’s latest product release.

What were your goals for this project?

We hoped to capture footage of talent and guests at the event, while also highlighting the new vehicle and the corporate brand client.

Our internal team contacted several preferred vendors, and we chose Pan Up Productions based on the quality of their past work.

The video captured the full scope of the event, which included talent performances, interviews with executives, interactions with products, and consumer engagement opportunities. Pan Up Productions handled preproduction, on-site capture, and postproduction, including the implementation of graphics, text overlays, and additional video effects.

What was your vendors' project management or feedback process?

We worked with the directors of the firm, who also served as editors on the project. They had about three weeks to edit the video and incorporate rounds of feedback into the final deliverable.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

This video was used for internal awareness and review. Our internal team was pleased with the final video, as was our client.

Pan Up Productions maintained open channels of communication. We held several meetings and phone calls prior to the event to ensure that we were aligned in our goals.

We appreciated their friendly, laid-back attitude and how they professionally handled everything. They were very easy to work with and produced high-quality work.

Are there any areas for improvement?

We would probably take more time to review the scope and ask for recommendations on how to repurpose all the content to be as efficient as possible.
