What was the scope of their involvement?

We needed to thoroughly review a custom-built tool and our network and infrastructure posture. We wanted to determine the vulnerabilities, if any, that existed in our systems. Packetlabs Ltd. identified issues like host header injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), username generation via forgot password, insufficient brute force protection, and insecure cookies. The team provided guidelines on how to begin remediation steps to resolve the issues.

Packetlabs Ltd. delivered a detailed report of findings, which allowed us to begin strategically addressing the gaps identified in the report.

Penetration testing and ethical hacking of our systems. The goal was to see how far an automated pen test could get, then to see if a compromised user account could gain enough information to discover or elevate to a domain admin.

I'm the CIO at an aluminum extrusion provider for the automotive and building industries. We produce reinforced aluminum for vehicles, as well as window frames for high-rise buildings.

What challenge were you trying to address with Packetlabs Ltd.?

We needed an external organization to perform penetration testing and review our organization's cybersecurity.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Packetlabs Ltd. conducted penetration testing and reviewed our IT system's cybersecurity. I asked Packetlabs Ltd. to review the front office vulnerabilities, and the team also installed software that allowed them to monitor our system's environment. Packetlabs Ltd. provided on-site services.

We worked with around five teammates from Packetlabs Ltd., including account executives, a project manager, and ethical hackers who were involved in the project's testing.

We invested just under $100,000 CAD (approximately $73,000 USD).

How did you come to work with Packetlabs Ltd.?

We met Packetlabs Ltd. through a referral.

What is the status of this engagement?

We initially contacted Packetlabs Ltd. in September 2023 to define the project's scope. The team was honest about their capabilities, and the reviewing process of our project took about a month and a half. We signed the contract with Packetlabs Ltd. in mid-October 2023, and the project was completed in December 2023.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The success of Packetlabs Ltd.'s work was demonstrated in the report they produced, which highlighted our security vulnerabilities. The report was very thorough and detailed, showing us things we couldn't have known by ourselves. Packetlabs Ltd.'s work quality was exceptional. We hired them because although we had heard of other cybersecurity firms, they weren't as accommodating to us as Packetlabs Ltd. 

The entire team was exceptional to work with. Packetlabs Ltd. had a strict hiring process, which appealed to me. The team hired exceptional professionals. 

How did Packetlabs Ltd. perform from a project management standpoint?

Packetlabs Ltd. delivered work on time and stayed on budget. I was surprised they could meet our deadline, which was in December 2023. The team surprised me by delivering the report just before the Holidays, on December 23. The budget was exactly as we had anticipated. Our contract stated that there would be two invoices: half of the budget would be paid upfront, and the other half would be paid when the project was completed.

We had weekly progress calls with Packetlabs Ltd. and follow-up calls on a daily basis. We communicated via phone calls and email and collaborated via Jira, Asana, and Trello.
Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

Christina (Client Success Manager) was outstanding.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Packetlabs Ltd. went above and beyond our expectations. We had a particular environment since we worked in a manufacturing environment. Our organization was comprised of two parts: the IT department and the operational technology (OT) department. The last one manages our machinery and robotics. 

Our engagement was strictly for our IT side. However, the team highlighted exposure or breaches in the security profiles that led to the OT environment and vice versa. I was surprised to get that because it wasn't part of the scope. The team delivered a detailed and extensive report about our entire environment's vulnerabilities. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

My only suggestion for Packetlabs Ltd. is to improve their communication regarding cybersecurity tasks. We aren't a cybersecurity firm, so we didn't understand the specific tasks the team mentioned they'd do. Better communication explaining their work to have a clearer understanding of what the tasks mean would be beneficial.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

I suggest to contact Packetlabs Ltd. and let them do their job. The team is a security expert and is rated highly on the cybersecurity scale of penetration testing.
