There is a desktop application which works in the warehouse to manage orders and shipping. The same application allows you to charge the customers for subscription and other orders. Other than that, there are several reports and notifications. Limitations of existing system There were too many moving parts. The desktop application has its own database and web application has its own database. Syncing mechanisms need to be established and it results into duplication and inconsistency of data. There were too many SQL jobs which is used to import the data from other systems. Sometimes jobs gets failed, and then a lot of orders got missed. The generation of genealogy was slow, as the data structure was not optimized for it. The deployment process was cumbersome, taking around a week to prepare for the deployment after testing simulation multiple times. What we did in revamping The client asked us to rewrite the whole app, into one system to remove the use of different databases, and completely go away with the desktop application. We adopted latest practices and adopted microservices based architecture on Azure platform.  As it's a microservices based architecture, introducing a new developer becomes easy and onboarding is a lot quicker as the developer does not need to understand the full application. Microsoft Azure Kubernetes Services was used to orchestrate the deployments and due to automation, a lot of time got saved for preparing simulation environments. For managing the genealogy, we use the cosmos database with Gremlin api as a graph database. Getting the hierarchical data is much faster using a graph datanase. Using Azure and CI reduces the cost a lot, both with hardware and server management.
