I hired Olearis to build my mobile language-learning app. The idea is playful and engaging, comparable to Duolingo at first glance, but with its own learning mechanics and a custom user experience. Olearis covered both design and Flutter development. On the design side, they turned my early idea into a much clearer product — onboarding, lesson screens, learning flows and the overall mobile UX. I appreciated that they thought about how users actually move through the app and stay motivated, not just about visuals. On the development side, they implemented a product with a lot of custom interactive learning logic carefully and reliably — this needed a team that understands the product, not one that just codes screens. Key deliverables so far: the working Flutter app for iOS and Android, the backend behind it, and — currently in progress — a content-creation platform that produces and manages the learning content for the app. Release to the app stores is the next step.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The app itself is not launched yet, so the measurable outcomes are about delivery quality — and those numbers are strong. We verify every work package with structured acceptance tests, and the results speak for Olearis: in one feedback round, all 7 reported issues were verified as fixed on the very next dev build; in our latest acceptance run, every single item of two combined work packages passed. Feedback packages are typically implemented within days, timelines are realistic and met, and the product is feature-complete across five learning languages. For me, the most telling metric is how little re-work is ever needed.

Excellent. Communication runs through Slack and regular calls, response times are short, and feedback packages are turned around within days — often faster than I expect. When I report something, I get a substantive answer: fixes are confirmed precisely, and when something is a deliberate design decision rather than a bug, they explain the reasoning instead of just closing the ticket. They also proactively flag corrections themselves. Timelines are realistic and met, and we are practically never out of sync. It is the most responsive development team I have worked with.

Three things: the consistently high quality of their work, the excellent communication, and — most of all — that they genuinely think along and even think ahead. That level of engagement with the product itself is what sets them apart.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Very rapid development of a perfect UI model thanks to Olearis researching the space and direct information from a domain expert, moving on to the app development to enable multiple warning levels of many hazardous situations. Next came flight testing to refine the trigger levels and UI, which is where we are at now.

Olearis' team has been easy to communicate with, we have weekly calls, and they execute my priority olist very effectively and responsively. They deliver on time, even in an exceptional circumstance where I needed some features rushed to make a flight test dedline. They are great to deal with.

What challenge were you trying to address?
Olearis developed and helped launch a cross-platform mental wellbeing mobile application for our company, including iOS and Android builds, backend infrastructure, AI chat and voice features, and app store submissions.
From a delivery standpoint, the application was ultimately published on both platforms and core functionality (text chat, voice interactions, subscriptions, and backend systems) was implemented. Communication during the project was generally responsive, and regular status updates were provided.
However, following the end of the engagement, I conducted a detailed post-contract financial and timesheet audit. This audit revealed significant concerns around hourly billing practices. In particular, I identified repeated and overlapping task descriptions across multiple weeks, uniform daily hour patterns, and a lack of verifiable proof of work (such as commits, work-diary evidence, or artifacts) corresponding to a substantial portion of the hours billed.
While source code and assets were delivered, the documentation and evidence provided were not sufficient to independently verify that the billed hours accurately reflected the work performed. This materially changed my assessment of the engagement compared to my initial impression during active development.
In summary, while the project did result in a launched product, I would advise other clients using hourly contracts to closely monitor billing, require strong proof-of-work practices, and ensure clear separation of scope between development and design services.

Olearis was engaged to provide end-to-end development and design services for a cross-platform mental wellbeing mobile application, including iOS and Android development, backend infrastructure, AI features, and app store launch support. While a working product was delivered, a later review of project records raised questions around how some effort was allocated across the team.

Overall, I’m very satisfied with the collaboration, but if I had to mention one area for improvement, it would be around estimating timelines more accurately for highly complex features — especially those involving new AI capabilities or unpredictable app store review requirements. Some parts took longer than initially expected, although this was largely due to the nature of the work and external factors.

That said, whenever delays appeared, the team communicated openly, adapted quickly, and resolved issues without compromising quality. Their transparency and willingness to go the extra mile made a huge difference.

In general, the experience was very positive, and any challenges we faced were handled professionally and constructively.

Although the project was ultimately successful, it ended unexpectedly. 

The original scope was delivered on time and within budget, and the client confirmed satisfaction with the quality. The app was successfully published to both the Apple App Store and Google Play. 

After that, the client returned to us with an additional feature, and after we tracked the initial 24 hours of work in progress, he said it should have been completed within 10-12 hours. Such an expectation was not communicated beforehand, and would not have been started by us if we had known it. We worked with an hourly contract, tracking actual time spent. In the end, we spent more time, but it was not approved and paid, which led to the contract termination.

Describe the scope of work in detail. Please include a summary of key deliverables.

The company was hired to design and develop my app using Flutter and assist in launching it on the App Store and Google Play.

At first, everything seemed to be going well. However, after I had already spent the maximum promised budget on design, they suggested keeping it the same as the prototype, even though it was far from what I had originally shown them as my preference. I had to make several adjustments myself to improve its appearance.

Once the design was implemented on the phone, I noticed something was off. Despite this, the designer kept insisting that everything was correct. To verify my concerns, I hired three independent designers to conduct an audit, and they all pointed out the same issues. Eventually, the company made the necessary fixes.

When development began, every new build they sent me would break something that had previously been working. After we agreed to break up, we agreed that they would upload the final build, and I would have two weeks to report bugs, which they would be responsible for fixing. However, they only managed to upload it to the App Store, never fixed the reported bugs, and after five months, we got rejected by Google Play four times.

I had to hire a new development team, and they got the app live on Google Play within just one week. After all this, the company demanded payment for work they didn’t complete. When I requested compensation, they only refunded me $300, even though hiring them for the same job would have cost thousands.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The app was eventually built, but they were unable to upload it to Google Play. Additionally, they did not complete or fix everything that I had paid for.

Describe their project management. Did they deliver items on time? How did they respond to your needs?

When I first contacted them, I showed them a similar app to what I wanted to build. They provided me with a roadmap stating the project would be completed by the beginning of March. The app they referenced was three times bigger than the MVP of my app.

However, in the contract, they estimated the timeline from mid-February to mid-April. At first, I wondered why the timeframe was the same for my app, which had significantly fewer features, but I accepted it, thinking it would still be ready in March.

They didn’t finish it by April, and we only managed to launch the app in June. After receiving all the money, their progress slowed even further, with them claiming their developers were working on other projects. By November, I had no choice but to hire new developers to finally complete the project.

Nothing. I wish i never worked with them.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Olearis could have done differently?

They promised I would be in direct contact with the programmers, but after asking a few times, I was never able to communicate with them. With my new team, I now chat directly with the programmers and can get a fixed build within an hour. With Olearis, it would take 1-2 weeks.

I wish their CEO, Alexander, wasn’t that rude.
 

I discovered that the designers included in their portfolio the ideas I wanted for my app, which they are now using in their own project. This was a clear violation of the NDA, as they were not allowed to use my concepts.

Additionally, they added a similar feature that we had developed for my app into their own app before mine was even launched—without informing me that we were actually competitors.

Fact: This is false. We never re-used the client’s ideas. The app’s core idea—“MyQualia points”—was never used elsewhere. Features like mood tracking are standard in many apps. No code or proprietary content was reused.

Claim: “They violated the NDA.”

Fact: Absolutely not. We fully complied with all terms. No confidential information was disclosed or reused in any way. If needed, we can provide proof of compliance.

Claim: “The design had issues confirmed by three external designers.”

Fact: The design met best practices and was initially approved by the client. Later, subjective changes were requested based on personal preferences and feedback from friends, which we implemented at no extra cost.

Claim: “The app wasn’t published due to design flaws.”

Fact: The delay on Google Play was partly due to legal and business-related issues, not technical ones. These matters were under the client’s control but were unfairly attributed to us.
