I’m the web content specialist for corporate communications and public affairs at our hospital. I was closely involved in the design and launch of our new website.

What challenge were you trying to address with Digital Echidna?

We hired another company for the design, but they worked closely with Digital Echidna for the technical aspects, including the development.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

After the designs were approved, we moved toward putting everything on the website. The other company did a lot of the migration, but Digital Echidna helped us set up all the CMS and taught us how to use Drupal. The site itself is built in Drupal8.

What is the team composition?

We work with an account manager, a project coordinator, and a web developer. We worked on the more technical aspects with the coordinator and the developer.

How did you come to work with Digital Echidna?

They partnered with our design firm, which is how we were introduced to them.

How much have you invested with them?

All of the funding went through the design company, so I’m not sure how much of that went to them.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started around January 2019. We launched in June 2019, and we use them now for ongoing support.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The whole process went very smoothly. There were very few issues in the process, and they really brought the site to life. It’s a big website, but it runs well.

How did Digital Echidna perform from a project management standpoint?

They used a bug tracker where we could log issues, and they got back to me quickly whenever there was a problem. They helped us address our questions about Drupal, and they oversaw the project in the best way possible. As tasks were completed, we signed off on them and moved on.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re very helpful and responsive. Even when we asked a lot of questions, they always made sure we were pleased. They were always happy to provide advice, and we got the site up much faster than other hospitals who work with other developers. The collaboration was great, and we worked very well together. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We worked within relatively tight timelines. In retrospect, we should have given them more time to prepare for launch, but that’s the only thing I can think of that could have improved.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The process is fairly straightforward, and I don’t have any other recommendations.

I’m a project manager in the IT department at Andrew Peller, Limited. Our organization sells wine, with 100 retail stores in Ontario and nine estates in Ontario and British Columbia.

What challenge were you trying to address with Northern Commerce?

We’re really trying to promote our business online, and stay on top of the newest trends. It’s a little bit new for the industry that we’re in specifically, so we’re trying to push our estates, stores, and wineries into the digital environment to create new revenue streams.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Northern Commerce was originally brought on to help build some of our estate websites. Those sites were more informative than transactional, and showcase our wines, estates, and our process.

More recently, we completed a rather large project to build out a website that consolidates the bookings for our travel and tourism component. Each of our estates offers tours, tastings, and events. So, the website consolidates all of those events and allows users to build out their itinerary, make those bookings, as well as schedule reservations.

It was a completely new implementation across the board. They built the platform on Magento with a SQL into PHP backend. We provided our requirements, and they gave us wireframes for us to approve. They created the databases that come along with Magento and built up the frontend consumer journey. The scheduling aspect was the toughest part they had to build out, because we needed to program an event to happen every 20 minutes. They completed everything seamlessly, and we’re looking forward to our next project together.

What is the team composition?

Colton (Director of Production, Northern Commerce) was our initial point of contact, and Paul (Project Manager, Northern Commerce) was our point of contact after the project was initiated. Paul had a team that we didn’t interface with at all. There were also designers, developers, and a DBA (Doing Business As) team.  

How did you come to work with Northern Commerce?

We evaluated the Magento developers in Canada, since there aren’t many. We compared Northern Commerce against some of their competitors, and after speaking, they seemed eager to take on the project. They’re a young company, and they have their thumb on the social media, which is vital to our marketing strategy. It was clear they’re on the cutting edge of what digital commerce and e-commerce is. They had no issues with resourcing, and were ready to start right away. Based on the work we’ve seen them do, we were comfortable that they’d be the right partner firm for us.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together in August 2017, and our engagement is ongoing.

They work on a number of initiatives for us, but our last project they probably spent about eight months on.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We haven’t had any issues whatsoever with the product they delivered. It’s been great, they delivered according to our specifications, and they’ve been nimble with change requests. From a technology standpoint, they’ve been great. Everything was on time and within budget. 

They’ve provided a core piece of our business, especially for our busy summer season. The stability of the system has been key in the smooth operation of the tourism business this summer.

There’s nothing quantifiable yet, but things have been pretty smooth so far.

How did Northern Commerce perform from a project management standpoint?

There have been no issues from my perspective, whatsoever. They use basecamp as a project management tool. They’ve been open and forthcoming with any sorts of milestones that were coming up or issues that may have come up or requirements that may need clarification. We have no issues with their communication with their project management

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their personability is excellent. We’ve had their president come down several times to discuss this project and many others. They’re always willing to jump in and take new initiatives or discuss any problems we’re having. They care about our success, which we appreciate.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I don’t have any feedback in that area at all.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Northern Commerce knows what they’re doing with digital marketing and e-commerce. I would follow their advice when it comes to design and layout. It’s important to believe what they tell you.

I’m the director of e-commerce at West Coast Kids, a retailer in Canada that sells baby gear, furniture, and products.

What challenge were you trying to address with Northern Commerce?

When I began working for my company about four years ago, we had an old e-commerce platform. We needed to find a future-proof platform that would help us grow as a company, especially on the e-commerce side.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Northern Commerce built our Magento 2 site on AWS. The team went through our existing site to determine what needed to be changed to meet our needs. They were responsible for all site design, development, and strategy. Northern Commerce built wireframes, developed the front- and backends, and implemented everything. They improved the checkout process and made it mobile-responsive.

The team also built out a registry, a key part of our business, and developed a product configurator, which allows customers to customize products. For instance, when a customer is building their stroller, they can choose the frame, frame color, handlebar grips, etc.

Northern Commerce launched the new site. Now, they manage our paid ads.

What is the team composition?

We’ve worked with a project manager, who is our main point of contact, and a lead developer. I’m not sure how many people work behind the scenes, but the president and VP of technology have made themselves available to us.

How did you come to work with Northern Commerce?

I did some research and looked for Magento partners. I reached out to Northern Commerce and 2–3 other vendors. When I spoke with Northern Commerce, they seemed agile, knowledgeable, and eager. They also provided us with examples of other Magento sites they’d built.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent $100,000 building out the new site. Our monthly spend is $5,000–8,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working with Northern Commerce in February 2016, and the work is ongoing. The site development and migration to Magento 2 took around six months. They continue to make frequent site updates and changes.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They did a wonderful job making sure our site would be successful. For instance, not many other company platforms have built-in registries. Over the last four years, we’ve experienced 40–50% year-over-year online growth. The paid ads have also been a huge success. For every ad dollar we use, we receive a return of 17–19-fold. We’ve gotten positive feedback from users that it’s easy to find products and checkout. Similarly, suppliers like how their products are displayed on the site.

Our old platform often crashed when there was heavy site traffic, such as on Black Friday and Cyber Monday; once, the platform was down for two weeks. Now, our platform’s server is as stable as a server can be and doesn’t experience slowdowns. The site is running 99.9% of the time. If there is an issue, Northern Commerce fixes it before I can even notice it. They’re monitoring the site 24/7.

How did Northern Commerce perform from a project management standpoint?

The team is very responsive. If we reach out to Northern Commerce and can’t get ahold of somebody, we can call the president, and he responds right away. They ask lots of questions and use their vast experience with e-commerce platforms to make suggestions or propose ideas. When we pursue a new project, they provide us with a project plan that includes a timeline and quote.

There are unavoidable hiccups with technology, but Northern Commerce lets us know if they run into an issue. Many of these issues are Magento-related and out of their control, but they quickly find a solution and fix it. During development, they used a scrum framework to manage the project. They also have quick turnaround times and have always been agile about completing work on time, even after growing quite a bit over the past four years.

Our main collaboration tool is Teamwork, which we use to track projects and report any bugs or issues. We also communicate via email and calls.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We’ve been impressed by Northern Commerce’s fast pace; when I ask for something, they work on it right away. They’re agile enough to make anything happen. Also, if they exceed the number of hours that they originally quoted us, they don’t charge us more.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We could have more in-person meetings; I think we’ve only had two. Other than that, I can’t think of anything that stands out.

Any advice for potential customers?

Be as detailed as possible about what you want done.

BACKGROUND

I work for SUNY Maritime College, a state university in New York. I’m the VIP project manager, so I’m involved in every project that has something to do with IT.

We needed to repair and modernize our website, which had an outdated UX and UI. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Digital Echidna first sent us some templates for homepage design, and we went through 5 or 6 before finalizing one. They also updated the old platform to Drupal 8 and made it mobile-friendly with a responsive design. In addition, they performed a web audit to make sure our site was compliant with AODA and WCAG 2.0 AA. Not only did they look for compliance issues, but they also fixed broken links and grammatical errors.

What is the team composition?

I work with two people on a daily basis. Christine (Account Manager, Digital Echidna) and Jonathan (Support Manager, Digital Echidna) are the ones who regularly support me. For the larger aspects of the project, I engage with around 5–6 people.

How did you come to work with Digital Echidna?

It was a bidding process where we released an RFP and they responded through the New York State Contract Reporter. They won the project by scoring the highest in the system. Building the website was such a pleasant experience that we kept working with them after they were done.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent somewhere between $75,000–$80,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began in May 2018, and the website was completed in December of 2018. Our relationship is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

I’ve never been disappointed with anything that they’ve produced. They’re quick to implement the desired fixes and to resolve any issue at hand. The website has updated features and functions, with an upgraded UX. We didn’t have anyone on staff that has the technical expertise to manage websites, so the team was extremely helpful. 

How did Digital Echidna perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re very responsive and ask a lot of questions, which I really appreciate. We have a weekly phone call to touch base during the active project times. Otherwise, we stay in touch through email and are pretty much in constant contact.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Digital Echidna is by far one of the most responsible web companies I’ve ever dealt with. Their customer service is excellent.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I really don’t think so. I haven’t had any negative experiences with them.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I think for any partnership, it’s important to stay in contact. If you don’t keep in touch, it’s going to be difficult for them to help you. The team does everything they can to keep the relationship going.

We needed a complete overhaul of our website, which was outdated and unsustainable. We wanted to ensure our website provided sufficient information to meet the public's needs and reduce call volume. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Digital Echidna did a lot of research around our target audience to better understand the customer experience and any touch points that needed to be addressed on the website. They then built the site on Drupal and provided input on design, but our in-house team did most of the layout. 

What is the team composition? 

We mainly work with a project manager, account manager, and a UX analyst.

How did you come to work with Digital Echidna?

As a government agency, we have to conduct an RFP and rigorous consideration process. Digital Echidna impressed us the most out of all the vendors that submitted proposals. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in August 2018 and launched the site by March, but they continue to provide support and work on other development projects as needed.

We're very happy with the site Digital Echidna built overall. People are able to find what they're looking for more easily and our search function is finally working properly. We're also getting fewer calls and emails from visitors having issues, which is a good sign the site achieved our goals. 

How did Digital Echidna perform from a project management standpoint?

They're incredibly responsive. We've met a few times in person, but we mostly hold meetings over Zoom so we can share our screens and collaborate. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

They're responsive, professional, and bring a lot of great expertise to the table. They're also flexible about any changes that come up on our end, while maintaining a great attitude.

No. They've been amazing to work with.

I work for a municipal government in Canada as a business systems analyst.

What challenge were you trying to address with Digital Echidna? 

Digital Echidna is helping us develop two new websites for municipalities that we represent. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement? 

Digital Echidna’s capacity is pretty much full scope. As analysts, they started by working with us to figure out what we wanted to do. Then they began creating the development of the structure of the new sites. They use Drupal 8 as a content management platform and Solr open-source enterprise-search platform. Those are being deployed on MySQL and a PHP backend server environment. 

They’re also responsible for the graphic design and custom module development. Digital Echidna is creating visual features and functions for the sites. We required a specific kind of information layout. They developed a tool for one website that they were able to replicate on the other site as well. 

What is the team composition?

We work with three members of their team, including a project coordinator, a business analyst, and a technical analyst.

How did you come to work with Digital Echidna? 

As a governmental entity, we had to go through a procurement process. We’re required to tender for the job if it's over a certain amount. We started by defining our requirements and the budget. That information is described in an RFP document that we placed on our public website and distributed through bidding websites.

Any private sector companies could bid on the jobs. They’re required to tell us how they would approach the job and what kind of solution they would implement. Then we sat down as a committee to rate each company on a scoring criteria that was publicly disclosed on the RFP. We also interviewed a number of applicants. Digital Echidna won the contracts by scoring the highest for the value indicators in the RFP. 

How much have you invested with them?

I believe we spent around $50,000 CAD (approximately $37,200 USD).

What is the status of this engagement? 

The relationship began in June 2017, and it’s still ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

So far, everything has been great. The websites haven't gone live yet, but we're within a few weeks of launch. The sites are working. The tools that we requested are in place. The functionality, the look, and the content of the sites are solid. We did a feedback loop to test what the end user thinks of the experience, and they’re very happy. 

How did Digital Echidna perform from a project management standpoint? 

Digital Echidna is so consistent with their project management. We have a call scheduled once a week as a catch-up. We had frequent face-to-face meetings in the beginning. Now if we do need to meet them, we gave them a weeks’ notice, and they come out to the client location. Most of the correspondence is done over email, and they usually respond within a day or two. If needed, an email question may get escalated to the technical team or designers. They recently started using Airtable for task management and bug tracking. 

We came up with a timeline that was realistic for everybody. Digital Echidna is cooperative and flexible, and they’re on track to meet all deadlines. We haven't had any real problems. If any little issues start to bubble up, they address them quickly. It’s been a smooth process and positive experience.

What did you find most impressive about them? 

It’s challenging to go from zero to two fully-complete websites. Digital Echidna is able to get what we had in our minds down on paper and then out into the world. It's not easy to get everybody to come to a consensus on a final product, especially when you have many stakeholders at the table who want different things and come with different expectations. Digital Echidna’s strength is their ability to serve as project managers and lead the process. In addition, the final products are solid, stable, and modern. 

Are there any areas they could improve? 

One area that’s been difficult has been the content strategy. Digital Echidna might assume that the client knows how to set up content for migration and determine a new structure. As a facilitator, they could play a stronger role in that process. It would be helpful if they would create a framework to walk the client through that transition to a new website. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers? 

If you've never been through this process, you may not realize how in-depth your role will be. You have to invest time and energy. Digital Echidna can’t do everything for you, so don’t go in with that expectation. You're going to have to give them information, especially when it comes to content management. Knowing that in advance would be quite helpful.

BACKGROUND

I’m the digital marketing manager for Napoleon, a manufacturer of grills, fireplaces, and HVAC products.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Digital Echidna?

We have numerous products that are sold in multiple countries, which led to having about 30 different websites for the Napoleon brand. We wanted to consolidate all of those sites into one enterprise-level product so that content was accurate and easy to manage.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Phase 1 was to build out the multi-language and multi-regional framework for our grills section of the website. Digital Echidna built a template that can be used for our grills, fireplaces, and HVAC products. The latter two products are still isolated from the new platform, but the grills are now within the new site. The site is in Acquia cloud and built in Drupal 8.

Because we’re a premium product, Digital Echidna incorporated powerful imagery on our product pages, which are heavy with content. They integrated it with our pin system, so we’re able to make content changes in one single source and have that reflected across multiple regions and languages at the same time. They put in a solr search functionality, which is quick and efficient. The site also has a custom-built dealer locator, which shows users where they can buy the product within the product details.

For the translation services, we partnered with Lingotek. We put in the English content, and their technology translates it into the desired languages. However, we’ve had some issues with the service, but that’s not Digital Echidna’s fault.

What is the team composition?

We work with an account manager, project manager, and lead developer. They have other team members, but we don’t interact with them on a regular basis.

How did you come to work with Digital Echidna?

After deciding we wanted to update our website, we began looking for agencies that worked in Acquia Cloud. The company provided a few recommended partners, which we spoke to and reviewed on Clutch. Digital Echidna was located nearby, met our requirements, and had a good quote, so we hired them.

What is the status of this engagement?

We partnered in April 2018, and the work is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Our first region was delivered on time, but it had some functionality issues. However, pages load quickly, and we haven’t had any downtime. We even won an award for best consumer goods website. So far, we’re satisfied with their work.

How did Digital Echidna perform from a project management standpoint?

We work almost daily with them, tweaking and improving different components of the project. We have weekly conference calls with their team, and they’ve maintained open communication. We always know what’s going on, and they quickly respond to any concerns. The project manager is extremely detailed and takes great notes.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re communicative and honest. They own up to their mistakes and provide clear explanations for the decisions they make.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We could’ve done a better job at more clearly outlining the initial scope of work. However, we’ve learned from our mistake and now provide much more specific instructions and expectations.

I am a technical project manager at the University of Washington.

What challenge were you trying to address with Digital Echidna?

We hired Digital Echidna to create a new website and coordinate a data migration initiative for the University of Washington’s School of Social Work. The site is for all state-employed social workers who are continuing their education and for foster care parents trying to receive licenses. We needed a more robust website to display all of the education options available to those groups.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Digital Echidna transferred all of the information and content for our existing website over to a new Drupal website, which they then began building out to showcase all of the course options for students—including in-class opportunities, online classes, and webinars. Digital Echidna also built the site to be able to track users’ progress toward foster parent certification.

What is the team composition?

We've primarily worked with Luke (Support Development Manager, Digital Echidna), Robert (Web Developer, Digital Echidna), and Jonathan (Support Manager, Digital Echidna).

How did you come to work with Digital Echidna?

Our university has a master list of vendors that we are permitted to use. From that list, we interviewed three firms, and we determined that Digital Echidna was the best fit for our project.

Our engagement began in June 2018 and remains ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Digital Echidna performed the data migration early in our engagement, and they helped us launch the new website in January 2019. The feedback we’ve received so far centers on the site’s improved speed and organization, so we’re very pleased with the outcome so far.

How did Digital Echidna perform from a project management standpoint?

Overall, we have communicated really well despite working across time zones. Our one hiccup occurred when Digital Echidna brought a project manager to a few of our stand-ups, but they didn’t tell us that beforehand. We weren’t comfortable with their project manager’s presence in our meetings, so Digital Echidna removed them from the team.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re clearly knowledgeable in their space, and they’ve been able to answer all of our questions easily. We also appreciate how patient they’ve been with us throughout the engagement.

Are there any areas they could improve?

In addition to our project manager miscommunication, we could have benefitted from a more detailed explanation of their team composition. We were under the impression for quite a while that Andrew (Owner, Digital Echidna) would be one of our engineers, but that didn’t turn out to be the case.

I am the owner of McGowan Digital Group Inc. We are a specialized Drupal consultancy helping large organizations with their enterprise CMS solutions.

What challenge were you trying to address with Digital Echidna?

I’ve hired Digital Echidna to assist with a replatforming initiative for one of my clients.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

My client worked with another vendor before me and attempted to do what we are now doing—replatforming their Drupal website—but that engagement went poorly. I’ve been hired to pick up where that vendor left off and correct the mistakes they left behind.

For the first three months of our partnership, Digital Echidna assisted with ongoing development from a site-building perspective. Since then, their resources have primarily helped with frontend architecture and implementation for the replatforming project. The challenging part of their work is weeding through the technical debt and continuing to maintain legacy code and libraries the previous vendor built. Further, they’ve helped set the best practices and the direction in which implementation occurs.

What is the team composition?

At the beginning of the engagement, we were working with two developers. After three months, my client's priorities shifted, and we scaled down to only one resource from Digital Echidna.

I initially found them about 10 years ago, and I also worked for Digital Echidna at one point in time. With my knowledge of Andrew and the team he strives to build, it was a no-brainer to reach out to see if they were able to assist.

Our engagement began in August 2018 and remains ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Internally, I’ve enjoyed having Digital Echidna on board to fill the role of at least one full-time employee without having to train them personally. From a delivery perspective, they’ve been fantastic. My client is absolutely thrilled. The initial engagement was only going to be for three months, but the client has renewed the additional resource funding two other times, and there is potential for a third time in the coming months.

How did Digital Echidna perform from a project management standpoint?

We’ve had no issues. My client or I handle the project management duties, but the Digital Echidna team is engaged during our stand-up meetings, scrums, and sprint planning sessions.  

What did you find most impressive about them?

I appreciate their willingness to learn and adapt to a different methodology and the way we work. They have stepped out of their comfort zone, and they deliver high-quality work on time.

No, I think they’re doing a fantastic job.

I’m the owner and creator of a website called BabyMed.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Digital Echidna?

We need to update our website as we’d had it since the 1990s. We wanted to move it to a new CMS.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They updated our website and have continued to be our webmasters since then, working on the site and making sure it complies with SEO. We were using an older version of Drupal and, a couple of years ago, Echidna migrated the site to the newest one. They continue to address any issues that arise.

What is the team composition? 

We were assigned one resource, whom we have access to every day, except weekends, and he assigns tasks to other people. If something does go wrong at night or on weekends, somebody will be available to address it. Fortunately, it’s happened only once, but we have peace of mind knowing there are measures in place.

How did you come to work with Digital Echidna?

Our previous webmaster and hosting company recommended three providers to us. Out of those, we found Echidna to be the closest to our philosophy.

How much have you invested with them?

The total cost of their work has been in the $500,000–$1 million range.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them five or six years ago and the collaboration is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’re now able to add and edit content, and the site has been extremely stable. There’ve been no downtimes due to the site itself, although there was one crash caused by our hosting company. From a stability point of view, they’ve done a wonderful job.
