We're a biotech company strongly active in the agro-food industry. Since its foundation in 1997, we have been developing rapid testing solutions for the food security. We have built a strong expertise in the detection of contaminants by means of a unique multiplexing approach.

For what projects/services did your company hire Newsoft?

To commercialize a new product, we needed a Android application to ease the use of our new device. The main problem was the lack of documentation of the protocol to be able to interface the device with the phone.

What were your goals for this project?

The main goal was to connect the device with the rest of the world and especially with our servers collecting the data. The device was used through an old Windows software and linked to a computer with a USB cable. We wanted to ease the use of the device by allowing the user to control it with its smartphone through a BlueTooth connection.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We were looking for a Ukrainian software freelancer on a well-known website because we were already working with a Ukrainian. And by luck, we found out a great professional software engineer working quickly while meeting all our requirements (even if the project was kind of obscure at the beginning but he was very adaptive).

He designed and developed a complete Android application using Kotlin and communicating perfectly with our device through Bluetooth or USB. The application is very responsive and easy to use.

What was the team composition?

There was only one software engineer but he did all the job very efficiently. I was the project leader and was telling him what to do but he was also very proactive by proposing many changes which was beneficial to the project.

We were able to launch our product and acquire more clients because our device was ahead of the concurrency because of the newly developed application.

It was a one person project but he managed it very efficiently and very professionally.

I was very impressed by the proactiveness, flexibility, and ability to work quickly while delivering quality code.

While there is always room for improvement, I can't see one are in particular.

Newsoft built the first iterations of our product and the foundation for the technical infrastructure. They also guided us on how to optimize the product for the things we wanted to accomplish. The team was responsible for every part of the product and did all of this with minimal input from us.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Newsoft delivered a functional product and grew it over time. They completed many features throughout the project and constantly improved the product’s performance. I was simultaneously testing the product with live data from other people in the industry, and I can confirm that everything was working very well.

How did Newsoft perform from a project management standpoint?

Newsoft delivered on time and even overdelivered. The team was always on top of it and was transparent with us when they thought something was unrealistic. Overall, they always outperformed our expectations. We communicated via virtual meetings, emails, and messaging apps.

I was impressed by how much they accomplished despite the ambiguity they had to deal with. It was unexpected that they could work with non-technical people, and I would absolutely work with them again.

Newsoft has provided staff augmentation services for us. The team has provided a consultant who works full-time as a software engineer, collaborating with my product managers to deliver new features and enhancements, such as enterprise connectors and middleware.

We chose them because they had access to great talent. In particular, one employee had worked with me on a previous project, and I wanted to continue working with this person.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Newsoft's consultant is a true member of the team and goes beyond expectations for a software engineer, such as working independently and closing tickets. He's made many positive contributions to the team.

He has recently patched a considerable number of security vulnerabilities, which has allowed us to proceed with a customer POC on time. The customer has been able to launch on time because our application cleared their security reviews without any delays.

We mainly deal with this one employee, but we communicate via email.

Deliverable was a bounty and application system that can be used by our affiliate recruiting company. Newsoft created a database, backend and admin portal to add users, new company & recruiter accounts, and bounties (i.e. job listings). They also developed a frontend site for candidate applications & employer review process, as well as MVP frontend user experiences for Recruiters and Company users. 

Additionally, they developed a Slack bot that integrates with Company Slack teams to notify them of new applications and send timed update requests to keep candidate statuses fresh.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

• Weekly team meetings to discuss progress and review what has been built. MVP build was feature complete before the deadline. After that we simply did QA and polish.
