I’m the head of international development for ACB, a sports association comprising 18 basketball clubs that organize and participate in professional and official state basketball competitions.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Mecexis?

We needed help with the development of a software platform to manage our international broadcasting and a frontend for the bookings and interaction with the TVs that are part of our international distribution.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Mecexis developed the backend and frontend of our platform. The backend included the management of contracts, agencies, invoicing and payments, currencies, broadcasters, broadcasts, events, competitions, audios, teams, graphic options, countries, broadcast productions, seasons, streaming types, regions, satellites, notifications, and users. The frontend included the management of fixtures, bookings, notifications, and deliveries (streaming and satellites).

What is the team composition?

We worked with 2–5 teammates from Mecexis.

How did you come to work with Mecexis?

Mecexis was referred to me.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from December 2020–September 2022.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Mecexis delivered the main tool of our framework. We saw a critical improvement in work time and efficiency, as well as the satisfaction of our customers. For example, the time we needed to manage all these tasks was reduced by 90%.

How did Mecexis perform from a project management standpoint?

Mecexis's project management was very satisfactory in terms of quality and time. We communicated via in-person meetings.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Mecexis's approach was impressive. They focused on understanding the nature of our activity, abstracting the issue, and creating data structures and functions tailored to that specific problem rather than just automating the protocols or processes we had been using up to that point.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I didn't think there was anything they could improve on.

Describe the scope of work in detail. Please include a summary of key deliverables.

Mecexis built the web platform and web app for our chess-based competitive gaming product. They covered the full stack, from product definition to backend, frontend, payments, compliance and production operations.

Product and architecture

• 18 product specs ("shapings") defined together with us before development started, turning a complex idea into buildable scope.
• Modular Django 5 architecture with separate domains: users, game, challenges, friends, wallet, KYC, general and websocket.
• Delivery in eight MVP phases followed by four maintenance phases.

Real-time gameplay

• Real-time play over websockets (Django Channels + Daphne + Redis channel layer), including live game and friends interactions.
• Chess rules handled with python-chess and a dedicated Stockfish engine service integrated into the game logic.
• Challenge system with its own models, signals and management commands, and game rewards logic covered by automated tests.

Payments, wallet and compliance

• Wallet system with its own service layer, transaction helpers and signals, integrated with Stripe for payments.
• KYC verification flow with a dedicated service layer and admin tooling.
• Two-factor authentication, JWT authentication (DRF + SimpleJWT) and field-level encryption for sensitive data.

Frontend and user experience

• Server-rendered frontend with Pug templates, HTMX for dynamic interactions, SASS and asset compression.
• Multilingual support (django-modeltranslation and Rosetta), CKEditor for managed content and transactional emails through Brevo. Backend services and operations.
• Asynchronous processing and scheduled jobs with Celery and Celery Beat.
• PostgreSQL on Neon, Redis for cache and channels, and Cloudflare R2 (S3-compatible) object storage.
• Containerized deployment on Hetzner Cloud with Terraform for provisioning and Kamal for zero-downtime deploys: multiple application instances and dedicated Celery workers behind a load balancer, with Cloudflare in front.
• Error tracking with Sentry and product analytics with PostHog.
• Dev environment with Docker/devcontainer, a Makefile for common tasks (build, migrations, database backup and restore, deploy) and README documentation for local setup, Stripe testing and deployment.

Beyond the contract, Adria and the team gave us extensive strategic and technical advice, often unpaid.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

• Delivered the complete MVP in 8 of 8 planned phases, followed by 4 maintenance phases.
• The platform went live in production: a multi-node cluster on Hetzner (3 application instances, dedicated Celery workers and Redis) serving both the production and beta environments.
• All core product modules shipped and working end to end: real-time chess play, challenges, friends, wallet with Stripe payments, and KYC verification.
• Over 500 commits across roughly two years of continuous development and maintenance.
• Ongoing maintenance phases kept the platform running and evolving after launch.

Describe their project management. Did they deliver items on time? How did they respond to your needs?

Mecexis managed the project in a clear, phased structure: a product-shaping stage first, where 18 specs were written and agreed with us before any code, then eight MVP phases, each one invoiced and closed on its own, and four maintenance phases after launch. That structure gave us visibility and control at every step, which matters a lot for a founder-led team.

• Deadlines: deliveries consistently arrived ahead of the agreed dates. On the few occasions when timelines slipped, the cause was external to Mecexis, never the team's execution.
• Communication was direct and honest. Adria and the team told us what was feasible, what was risky and what to postpone, instead of just executing tickets.
• They adapted to our needs as the product evolved, and absorbed changes in priorities across a two-year relationship.
• They stayed involved well beyond the contract, giving us extensive strategic and technical advice, often unpaid, at moments when we needed it most.
• Development was continuous and traceable along the full development.

What was your primary form of communication with Mecexis?

• In-Person Meeting
• Virtual Meeting
• Email or Messaging App

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

What sets Mecexis apart is the combination of real talent and deep knowledge of the field.

• Breadth of expertise in one team: product shaping, backend, real-time systems, payments, KYC/compliance, frontend, DevOps and infrastructure. We did not need to coordinate separate vendors, since Mecexis covered the whole chain, from the first spec to production servers.
• Mastery of complex, less common domains: real-time multiplayer over websockets, chess engine integration (Stockfish), wallet and payment flows with Stripe, and identity verification. These are areas where many agencies struggle, and Mecexis handled them with confidence.
• Modern, well-chosen technology: Django 5, Channels, Celery, Terraform, Kamal and PostgreSQL on Neon, among others. Their choices were pragmatic and suited to a startup that needed to ship and then scale.
• A partner, not just a supplier: The team understood our business, challenged our assumptions and offered strategic and technical guidance far beyond the contract, often for free.
• Genuine care for the outcome: the project was treated as if it were their own, and that showed in every phase.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Mecexis could have done differently?

The knowledge required to criticize their work is far beyond my capacities.
