We are an e-commerce business based in Chicago, and we cater specifically to bridesmaids all around the country. These women often face a challenge trying to coordinate their purchases. We have a sales team that operates as style consultants. They actively guide our customers through the sales process and advise them on style and how to coordinate their purchases. We also have a "try at home" program, so customers are able to recreate that boutique experience in their own homes.

What business challenge were you trying to address with Matellio?

The main reason we engaged with them was to implement Salesforce as our CRM [customer relationship management] tool.

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

We use Salesforce very differently than many other companies because it is almost entirely consumer facing. We monitor and manage our customers' activity and behavior across our website through Salesforce, which then helps our sales team be smarter about how they communicate and reach out to our customers. Matellio was hired to create the end points, and to plug Salesforce into our shopping platform.

The relationship has evolved tremendously, and we now use them as our outsource development team. We originally thought that we would just hire them for one project, but now they are doing everything for us, from UI/UX [user interface/user experience] implementation through more sophisticated database and PHP work. They live and breathe right alongside us, and we work with their team every day.

How did you come to work with Matellio?

I met them through a family connection – the chairman of their board is a family friend. We did a kickoff call and moved forward from there.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

We spend between $50,000 and $60,000 annually working with Matellio.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Matellio in the fall of 2013, so our relationship has been ongoing for almost two years.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics, metrics or other feedback from this engagement?

Their work is very good, which is why I continue to work with them. We recently brought on a technology lead person, who is now interfacing with Matellio and has much more technical knowledge than I do. We're a startup, and they're adjusting very quickly. They're able to deliver what we need from them 95 percent of the time, and everything is accurate.

I think our bringing of someone on our team to work with the QA [quality assurance] has been helpful, and Matellio actually ended up adding another QA person to their team as well. As our work became more frequent and the deadlines became tighter, QA became an issue. When we brought that issue to their attention, they fixed it. I think we have a unique relationship with them, where Matellio is essentially operating as another product manager for us. It's helped tremendously to have the project manager here in the United States because we can have calls with him during our working hours. The information is relayed to their team overnight, so they're constantly working.

What distinguishes Matellio from other providers?

With Matellio, the best part for us is definitely having an onshore project manager and an offshore team. We get the service and timeliness that we need here in terms of communication, along with the cost and speed of work being done overseas. Matellio has been quick to pick up how to write in certain languages and how to tinker with certain products as needed, which has been good.

Matellio has their Salesforce certification, but we haven't been able to take advantage of that yet. I'm not quite sure how mature their knowledge of Salesforce is. We work with another outsource team just for Salesforce and would like to start moving some of that work to Matellio. We haven't been able to do that yet because they haven't yet developed the sophistication to help with some of those tasks.

Is there anything Matellio could have improved or done differently?

QA continues to be an area for improvement. Admittedly, things can sometimes get lost in translation, but I think that double-checking and proofing work before they send it live is really important.

Matellio has completed 11 epics related to the improvement and expansion of our app. Currently, we're moving into a new phase with Matellio to continue building. The team has built a new admin side of our app to make it part of a corporate world program. Additionally, they've included a few new features on the main dashboard of our app, including an educational part with embedded videos.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Our current private patients are benefiting from the embedded videos, and I receive verbal confirmation that they like the videos. Although we haven't tested the main build for the corporate world yet, I'm sure the results will be good.

Matellio's project management is great; they deliver on time. We communicate via virtual meetings.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Matellio is very understanding, friendly, reasonably priced, and accommodating. The team is also very good and patient at explaining technical terminology.

I don't think there's anything they can improve on.

Matellio has helped us with UI redesign and implementation, backend development using Node.js, and integration with our existing code. The team has completed two-week sprints with demos and deployment of code to a testing/staging server.

Matellio provided my company a MVP (Minimum Viable Product) for my fintech mobile app.  Our app categorises and improves user spending behaviour and tracks daily spending so that every financial goal can be met.  Our platform also integrates an AI chatbot that provides personalised insights and spending guidance. 

Key deliverables: 

• Matellio built a minimalistic and smooth interface that onboards users to ultimately connect their bank accounts to our app.
• Built a highly complex backend that automates the budgeting and savings process for users.
• Integrated open banking technology to analyse user transaction data and provide detailed insights.
• Trained an AI chatbot to understand users spending patterns and provide action items to improve behaviour and increase savings.

The team I am working with is great. They are very good at communication and will take time to understand the scope of the project before moving forward to ensure the vision of the product can come to life. Items on their side are always delivered in a timely manner and they have always responded in a professional manner to requests. 
Additionally, they have offered a healthy amount of pushback to features to help sharpen the MVP to help create the best product possible.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I like how much effort Matellio put into the planning and scope development phase. They did not rush into the project to just get paid and move on. One of the main reasons I went with Matellio is that their main objective was not to fit the scope of the project within a specific budget to guarantee that they would get paid for their efforts.
Their number one goal was to ensure that our vision came to life even if that meant them eating some of the cost.  To put it simply, Matellio cares more about the product than the money they will be making from creating the product.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Matellio could have done differently?

One of the things that could have helped in the earlier stages would be to proactively ask about some aspects of the app that non-developers might not know about. Without having a background in a developement it's easy to not clearly communicate exact aspects of certain features and it helps when the developer can help dig into the specifics of what is being asked for because as a non-developers we do not know what we dont know. 
Even despite that we were able to clarify these things and Matellio worked with us to make sure the features we wanted would still be given to us within our budget.
