I’m a department director of Global Ports Holding, the world’s largest cruise port operator. We manage 35 cruise ports in 20 countries and provide services for over 22 million passengers annually. We also have a commercial port operation that specializes in container and general cargo handling.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with MadeByCat?

We needed to create a new comprehensive digital ecosystem for more than 30 of our cruise port websites. Our objective was to establish a best-in-class standard for cruise port websites that could serve as a benchmark within the industry while creating a consistent look, feel, and UX across our global network.At the same time, each website needed to effectively address the needs of its key stakeholders, including cruise passengers, cruise lines, local partners, and other visitors. We wanted the sites to be intuitive, easy to navigate, and familiar in structure while still allowing each port and destination to retain its own identity.Ultimately, the goal was to create a scalable GPH-wide digital standard that delivers a consistently high-quality experience across all of our cruise port websites.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

MadeByCat has handled the project end-to-end, covering both the design and backend development of the websites. They first created the overall website framework and a comprehensive master design that could work across the GPH network. From there, they adapted and shaped each individual port website based on the specific needs, content, and characteristics of that port while maintaining a consistent overall GPH look and feel.

Some of the main deliverables have included the development of a flexible website framework and a set of common templates that could be used consistently across our global port network while still allowing each port to tailor its website to its own destination and operational needs.

MadeByCat has also delivered a number of integrations and functional tools, including integration with our proprietary berthing software, Google Maps integration, and other port-specific functionalities designed to improve the user journey and provide visitors with relevant, up-to-date information.

The platform has been built with an easy-to-manage CMS, enabling our local port teams to update and manage their own content. MadeByCat has also developed reusable content modules that can be applied across the network.

Their scope has also included supporting the content implementation process and providing training to our port teams so they can manage and update their own website content effectively. The relationship has continued beyond the initial launch. MadeByCat still supports us with ongoing development, improvements, and the introduction of new features as our needs evolve.

How did you come to work with MadeByCat?

We found them through an online search and a referral. We chose them over other options because they were close to our geographic location, had a great culture fit, offered good value for the cost, and were referred to me.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in the second half of 2024, and the engagement is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The most immediate measurable outcome has been the successful completion and rollout of the new websites across our global cruise port network, creating a much more consistent digital standard across more than 30 locations.
As the websites are primarily information and stakeholder communication platforms rather than sales-driven websites, we don’t measure their success through direct revenue or conversion metrics. In addition, not enough time has passed since the full rollout to assess longer-term performance trends in a meaningful way.
At this stage, the key indicators of success have been the successful implementation of the new platform, the consistency achieved across the network, the ability of our local teams to manage their own content, and the delivery of the required integrations and functionality across the different port websites.
Feedback from our local port teams has been very positive, particularly around the consistency of the websites, ease of content management, and the improved UX. The teams also value having a clear structure that still allows each port to reflect its own destination and local needs.

How did MadeByCat perform from a project management standpoint?

Overall, MadeByCat has managed the project well. During the most intensive phases, they’ve been particularly committed in terms of resource allocation and have made a strong effort to meet our requirements and deadlines. Given the scale and long-term nature of the project, there have naturally been some adjustments along the way, but overall, the project has been delivered within a reasonable timeframe.
We primarily communicate through virtual meetings, emails, and messaging apps.

What did you find most impressive about them?

What has stood out the most is the way MadeByCat has taken ownership of the project and worked as an extension of our in-house team. They’ve also been very proactive on the technical and technology side, regularly bringing new ideas, developments, and opportunities to our attention and helping us keep the platform up to date.
