They were on time and communicated seamlessly. The team was super organized. We used Jira and Notion for project management and Slack and Google Meet for communication.

I’m the founder of a small app studio. We’re building an app to help with the downsizing and moving process.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lickability?

We needed a partner who knew apps really well. We had bootstrapped our way through building a couple of early prototypes. We reached out to Lickability to help us reset the product and build it into a proper app, leaning on their expertise in the mobile app space.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Initially, we had a functional app on the App Store that we were marketing and selling. Lickability helped us rethink that app and worked through it to distill its core flow into something much simpler than we had originally built. Lickability worked with us to identify the core user flow and problem, using our user research and conversations to simplify the app's flow. The app was built for iOS using Swift, and Lickability focused on product design and ultimately delivered a functional prototype.

The app was designed to help people track things when changing locations. We focused on the core user flow of adding items. If users didn’t add items to the app, they weren’t using it, so we knew we needed to remove as much friction as possible from that core experience.

I had been in touch with Lickability for a while because they were one of the more prominent studios in this space. I had some early conversations with Thomas, who contacted me when I joined a Slack community for iOS developers.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We haven’t put the app into engineering yet, so we don’t have any metrics to share. However, the Lickability team did excellent work.

How did Lickability perform from a project management standpoint?

Lickability met deadlines. We had a quick and limited three-week engagement. We communicated via email and Slack.

Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

Although it was great working with all of them, Sam did the bulk of the work — I appreciated his work.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The two things that stood out were Lickability's work and professionalism. Additionally, Lickability made themselves available quickly for a relatively unstructured engagement, which was exactly what I was looking for.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It’s hard to think of improvements for Lickability. I could've paid more and received other things. Given our limitations, we did a good job as a collaborative team of finding ways to get a lot of value out of the engagement.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Make sure you have clarity on the scope and project timelines, as well as a shared understanding of what the scope includes. Always remember that it’s your job as the client to stay on top of communication. At every check-in, make sure you tell Lickability what happened, give them feedback, let them know what you expected from them, and ask what is needed from you so that you aren’t the hold-up.

I'm the senior director of product and design for an ultrasound hardware and software manufacturer. We build hand-held ultrasound devices and hospital integration systems. In my role, I oversee the design of our entire software architecture.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lickability?

We needed help with mobile app design for some of our product's key components.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Lickability became our mobile design partner about two and a half years ago. The team designed features for our mobile app, such as the user onboarding workflow. Whenever we ideated new features, we first worked on the wireframes, and we then reached out to Lickability to standardize those wireframes for the iOS platform. Basically, they brought good Apple standards into our design language.

To create the user onboarding workflow, Lickability helped us design the tutorials, which included creating animations from scratch. In addition to that, their team helped us create a notifications module. For this particular feature, we first created a prototype and some wireframes, and they took our designs to the next level.

Although our product includes web and mobile apps, we mostly worked with Lickability on the mobile side of things. Still, towards the end of our latest project, we did give them a small project on how to better lay out our web app. For this particular project, we wanted to revise the navigation because there were a couple of components coming together. Therefore, we needed help from an external point of view to standardize the layout hierarchy.

As for the technology stack, Lickability followed the industry standard. Their design tools included Figma, Adobe, and other standard animation tools. The team also offered development services, but we didn't need them.

We worked with two main designers from Lickability. The founder was one of those designers, and he played a crucial role in helping us better work through certain solutions. I also recall working with a project manager and someone on the legal side of things who helped us with the finance and billings. Overall, I met around 4–5 members of their team.

How did you come to work with Lickability?

My CEO introduced me to them. He's a big fan of The New Yorker, so he found them through there. Lickability's attention to detail was outstanding. Although UX and visual design are not high on the priorities list for medical companies, my team and I disagree and believe that cognitive loads and the likability of a product are very important to ensure success.

Therefore, we wanted to work with someone who understood that and paid a lot of attention to decluttering a product to reduce the cognitive load. Our domain itself is very heavy, as it deals with ultrasounds and patients. Hence, we wanted to ensure a lot of familiarity with the software so users didn't feel like it existed a learning curve to engage and leverage our product.

We ultimately chose Lickability because they were attentive and focused on creating minimalistic designs to reduce the cognitive workload.

How much have you invested with them?

Lickability's services cost an average of $3,500–$4,500 per month, but we didn't use them every month. Overall, we spent around $45,000 per year with them.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from June 2021–March 2024. Currently, our team is implementing all the designs and deploying the new features to our customers. Still, whenever we need more features, we'll definitely reach out to them again.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Measuring success for Lickability is a little tricky. We never iterated over a feature once it was built. Usually, the foundation of their work was pretty solid, but my in-house design team could still take it to the next level — at the end of the day, it was a collaboration. What I can say is that whatever work Lickability did was, in one way or another, leveraged by my team.

The quality of Lickability's work met our expectations. They were very open to us using their designs as the baseline to further enhance them to meet our needs. Their designs were not restrictive in any way, and overall, we really liked collaborating with them.

How did Lickability perform from a project management standpoint?

Lickability always delivered on time and responded well to our needs — they were a fantastic partner in that regard. Their project management was on point, and they had great minutes for meetings. They were also great at follow-ups. Whenever we had to deliver a document for them to proceed with a feature, they were very hands-on with reminders.

Similarly, if Lickability had to deliver something to us, they ensured to communicate the expectations and delivered on time. Their team was based in New York, and we were in California, so we mainly communicated via Zoom and Google Meet calls. We also shared some Slack channels.

Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

Sam (Product Designer) delivered fantastic work. Although he was still a student, he was very keen, smart, and dedicated; we really enjoyed working with him. Thomas (Senior Account Manager), who was on the legal and billing side of things, was quite wonderful as well.

Moreover, although MB (CEO) didn't have experience working with medical devices before, they were quite keen on the learning space. They were also great at decluttering interfaces according to what users wanted to make everything cohesive and streamline the requirements. Overall, Lickability's entire team was fantastic.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Lickability was great. They did work that I liked and were very customer-focused.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There was nothing Lickability could have improved on. If anything, I wish I learned how to manage a good work-life balance from them. They worked a four-day work week, which was something I took back to my team. However, we couldn't implement it because we're workaholics.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

Something that really helped me work with Lickability was finding a way to break the domain barrier. When possible, we found similarities between our different domains, and my team always broke down our industry into a more digestible form to help them understand. At the end of the day, Lickability is there to help you, so the more you bridge that knowledge gap, the better.

We needed support to build native applications for Apple devices and iOS systems since we had limited resources. We hired Lickability to help us improve the processes and tooling of our existing app in order to save time for our team.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Initially, we shared with Lickability a list of projects we had sourced internally based on feedback from my colleagues. We also shared the source code of our application with the team so they could examine the underlying code and functionality. We then had a kick-off meeting to review the projects, discuss their impact and effort, and prioritize work accordingly. 

Lickability also worked on development ergonomics projects and provided tools to make our work more efficient. The last project Lickability worked on was regarding research to validate a development concept we had.

We started working with Lickability in February 2024, and the project lasted 16 weeks.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Lickability delivered the results we were looking for, and the engagement saved us money. Our company works on software development, and over the past four years of our life cycle, the development process began to take a lot of time. We hired Lickability to improve that. As a result, our build process took 30%–40% less time, which saved us money. 

Lickability's development ergonomics project gave us tools that made our work easier. We were pleased with Lickability's work. We'd love to keep the partnership going; however, our company is at a stage where we're focusing on other things right now. We'd be delighted to engage with Lickability again in the future.

Some of the projects Lickability worked on were less scoped because they were more experimental. We didn't know how long the project would take, but we allocated a budget. All the projects Lickability worked on met our timelines and budget estimates.

Ken (Staff iOS Engineer) was phenomenal and a very talented engineer. He was easy to work with. I also want to highlight Thomas (Senior Account Manager) and Brian (Partner).

What did you find most impressive about them?

When we started the engagement, we had to figure out how to work with Lickability. The team came into the engagement expecting to be of service to us and have us tell them what they needed to do. However, I wanted Lickability to tell us what we should do because they were the experts. After a week of getting to know each other, I gave the team that feedback, and they were very quick to take action on it, which was great. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can't think of anything Lickability could improve. 

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

Something we did that helped us was having asynchronous daily updates. Lickability posted in the morning what they planned on working on and if they needed anything from us, and we would do the same. That kind of visibility was really helpful because people across our entire company could look at what Lickability was working on, which helped us keep work on track. 

We started doing this about two weeks into the project, and my suggestion to other clients is to do it since the beginning of the engagement.

I’m the founder and CEO of Mastodon, a nonprofit that develops free and open-source software of the same name. It’s a decentralized social media platform.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lickability?

I hired Lickability to design the UI/UX of our native mobile apps.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The initial steps involved a lot of calls to discuss the scope of the project. We had weekly check-in meetings where we discussed the designers’ progress. The prototypes were communicated through Figma, and they kept working based on my feedback and directions. 

At present, the initial prototypes have been done, but we still continue working on the apps with Lickability. Sam (Product Designer) has creative control over how the apps look. I don’t enforce specific things; I rather see the project as a collaborative effort between us. I do steer its direction sometimes, but more often than not, I let Sam do whatever he feels is the right thing to do. 

What is the team composition?

I’ve consistently interacted with three teammates from Lickability, namely Sam, the project manager, and the person who manages finances. Sam sometimes checks in with other teammates behind the scenes, but I mainly collaborate with him.

How did you come to work with Lickability?

I found them through one of their clients who used an app they designed. When I was looking for a designer, I wanted someone who had experience working on social media apps before. Mastodon was quite a huge project, so I needed someone who worked on something similar. One reference told me they had used an app designed by Lickability before. I looked at their website and saw their work on other social media apps. I liked what I saw in their portfolio, so I decided to engage them.

Our investment has been around $125,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in February 2021, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The reception of the apps has been positive, and their ratings on Google Play and the App Store serve as a metric for how well-designed they are. Although the design may only be a part of the high ratings, the apps are designed truly well. 

How did Lickability perform from a project management standpoint?

I haven’t set hard deadlines for Lickability, except for the initial launch. They meet my timelines, and our progress has always been steady and appropriate to our requirements. 

For communication, we have a Discord server for our company, and teammates from Lickability are on that server. We communicate over text to talk about asynchronous topics, while the weekly meetings happen in the Discord voice chat. We also use Zoom calls, but having video isn’t necessary except when screen-sharing.

Their quality is right where it needs to be.

No, there aren’t any.

Provide a clear scope of your needs, communicate your taste and style, and tell them your preferred design direction. Overall, communicating clearly helps you get the best results.

I’m the CEO of LoopGolf. We’re building a digital wallet for the golf space. Through our product, users are able to link a credit or debit card, fund their wallets, and participate against their peers in different games specifically built for golf.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lickability?

We had an idea of what we wanted to build. We had the interface design already, but we needed an engineering team to bring the wireframes to life.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Lickability was our development shop. We initially worked with the business development team on the discovery phase. We discussed the project scope to get an understanding of the potential cost. Then, our first engagement was to write user stories to understand what each wireframe would do and how customers would interact with that frame. Lickability asked the questions we hadn’t thought about and helped us with all the customer phases of each frame.

Ultimately, we were comfortable moving forward with the full engagement, and Lickability started to build the actual product using Swift. The application was for iOS only.

Andrew (Partner) was the lead engineer, and we worked with two other teammates. Additionally, they brought on another shop to help with backend development for the product.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in February 2022. They completed our MVP in August 2022, and we’ve continued to work with them in a more limited capacity ever since.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We have 2,200 downloads and a 4.5 rating in the App Store. Also, we’ve processed over $70,000 in gross payment volume, since it’s a digital wallet.

How did Lickability perform from a project management standpoint?

They were great on all fronts. Although we came in at the high end of the budget, it was due to the complexity of the project and scope creep. Lickability set proper expectations and estimated well how long it’d take to build certain features. Ultimately, we hit the timeline we targeted.

We were really happy with their communication. We had a Slack channel, and they were responsive during most times of the day. We also heavily leveraged Linear to manage the different builds, which was really helpful. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their engineering rigor and ability to code and handle complexity were outstanding. Also, their communication was really strong. The team didn’t put on any fluff; they were just straight shooters. They told us where they thought there’d be problems and provided clarity throughout the whole process.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They were on the more expensive end, but we got a pretty good value. Other shops quoted us well above what Lickability did.

Other than that, we didn’t have any areas for improvement.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Having a good idea of what you want to build is obviously helpful for all parties; the more you can go to them with a fleshed-out idea, the smoother the project will go.

I'm the executive director of product for The Atlantic. I oversee the team that's building our mobile app.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lickability?

We had had a mobile app for several years, and we decided to redesign and relaunch a new concept for the app. We engaged with Lickability to completely rewrite the app and its functionality. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Lickability developed our mobile app in native iOS code using Swift. They rewrote the app from scratch, focusing on key features that differentiated us from our competitors. These features included a screen showing a curated look at five stories our editors select as the day's must-reads. Additionally, they added functionality for users to access our crossword puzzle. Users could also save articles to read offline and download magazine issues.

The project included a complete redesign with brand new screens and different user-facing touch points. Lickability updated the app to match a new design system and more modern UX patterns. They also helped us align with best practices in other news apps. We preserved some of the previous app's architecture, such as in-app purchases and some of the more technical features. 

Once the app was live, we worked with Lickability for another two years to continue improving it. They helped us support in-app purchases, subscriptions, and linking subscriptions to our internal databases. The team managed our App Store presence regarding the metadata. We also consulted them on the screenshots to include in the App Store.  

What is the team composition?

We worked with a core team of  3–4 people from Lickability. Brian (Partner) was our main point of contact, and we also worked with Matt (Partner), Thomas (Account Manager), and Jillian (Project Manager). 

How did you come to work with Lickability?

Our former product lead had worked with some of the Lickability team earlier in their careers. When it came time for us to develop a mobile app, he leveraged that previous relationship because he knew the quality of Matt and Brian's work and their understanding of news apps in particular. Although we evaluated other providers, the team's knowledge and experience helped seal the deal.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around $1.5 million–$2 million.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from March 2017–March 2022.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

With the app Lickability built, we saw an increase in downloads, active users, and active days per month from those users. We have much more activity compared to the previous version of the app. While the previous app had some loyal users, they weren't a very large group, and their engagement wasn't growing. With this app, we've seen growth month after month. We haven't had any month where engagement has dropped, or our active users went down. Overall, the app has been a great growth product, and we've been very happy with the engagement results.

We've seen a lot more engagement and regular usage of our iOS app than any other service; readers are using it more frequently than our website or mobile site. However, we decided to stop working with Lickability because we're moving to a single code base powered by React Native, with plans to bring app development in-house. 

How did Lickability perform from a project management standpoint?

They were great at project management. We relied on them entirely to write implementation and bug tickets. They fully owned the Kanban board we had on GitHub and managed the progress of the work. We mainly communicated via Slack.

The team was incredibly flexible, which was important to us. We had months where we asked for a lot of work and others when we were a little quiet, and Lickability was able to flex on and off. Their meeting notes were good, and they were always very transparent about what we discussed in the action items; plus, they were also good at documenting that. They took all the burden of project management off our team, which worked quite well. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

I was struck by how Lickability approached our relationship like a partnership rather than a client-service relationship. When we discussed new features, enhancements, or bug fixes, they were never just asking what we wanted to do. The team would engage in the conversation with ideas and suggestions. They were constantly looking for opportunities to improve the UX and ensure we met expectations around best practices in the news app industry.

We got high-quality engineering work from them and great responses to incidents and bug fixes. Lickability distinguished themselves as an ideation and thought partner from a product design standpoint. They went above and beyond in being very engaged with us in the app's design and thinking about the user journey. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there was nothing unsatisfying about our partnership.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

The best partnerships are those where someone is looking for a thought partner. Although I'm sure Lickability would work fine with different arrangements, their tools are best used to help define the product experience and execute it. I would recommend them to companies that want to leverage the team's subject matter expertise in best practices in the mobile app development and news spaces. That focus would lead to the most fruitful partnerships.

I’m the founder of Aloe Bud, a self-care reminder app for iOS.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lickability?

I had an idea to create a mobile application but didn’t have the technical skills that were needed to develop it. I reached out to Lickability to create a beautiful and fully functional iOS app that could send push notification reminders to people’s devices whenever they set them up.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Lickability worked on the UI/UX design and set me up with an affiliate designer that wasn’t part of the internal team. I also worked with another artist to create the icons that are used throughout the app. I developed the app concept and the design of how it would work. The staff took that concept and translated it into Swift — which is Apple’s programming language — and made the app available to download on the App Store.

What is the team composition?

I worked with Matthew (Partner), Jillian (Project Manager), Thomas (Account Manager), and Michael (Senior iOS Engineer). 

How did you come to work with Lickability?

I had a previous relationship with Matthew, and I reached out to them knowing that they had a development company. I talked to the team about the idea to see if they could help me bring it to life. 

How much have you invested with them?

My business invested between $50,000–$75,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in April 2017, but development didn't start until June of the same year. We wrapped up and released the first iteration of the app in March 2018. We’re still technically working together, we just don’t have any ongoing projects right now.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Our biggest metric is the fact that the app has about 2 million downloads. We haven’t done any advertising and it’s all been organic. This clearly shows that Lickability has built a great product that has attracted so many people to find it and try it out. 

How did Lickability perform from a project management standpoint?

Lickability was great at being organized and meeting deadlines. Their style of communication is awesome; there was never a time I had to follow up with the team. They created a dedicated Slack channel for us so we could talk to each other daily and check in on what was going on — it was nice to have that space to stay updated. 

In the beginning, we met once a week over video hangouts to check the project’s progress and other aspects of it. As the project advanced, our check-ins weren’t as often, but when we did have them, they would be filled with excellent updates. We used a project management tool to see all of the different projects and tasks that were in development, and I could at any time look over the app status. A project manager was always in contact with me and was clear and concise in her messaging.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I very much enjoyed how they were professional yet easy to work with and talk to. They have the amazing ability to make app development feel like a fun experience. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don’t have anything for them to improve. They’re pretty great.

I’m an iOS engineer at a digital disposable camera experience app.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lickability?

We saw that our Japanese userbase was growing quickly. We wanted to localize the app as quickly as possible so it could be used in Japanese instead of English.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Lickability helped us translate our app on the iOS side. They did everything from simple word translation to more complicated measures. They also gave us guidance on how to implement the translation on the server-side as well for push notifications.

We worked with Matthew (Partner), Jillian (Project Manager), Thomas (Account Manager), Brian (Partner), and Andrew (Partner).

How did you come to work with Lickability?

I posted a job listing on an iOS forum. We had a prior relationship with Matthew and he reached out. We knew Lickability could do the job efficiently and they did.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in February 2021, and we wrapped up in March 2021. The project took about two weeks in total.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

They translated the app efficiently. Now our Japanese users can read the app in Japanese, which was our goal.

How did Lickability perform from a project management standpoint?

They were great at communication and meeting deadlines. They finished ahead of time and we had a shared channel that was easy to ask questions in. We did one initial video call and moved to a continuous chat every 1–2 days.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The quality and speed of their work were really great. They were nice, great people who got the job done.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I’m totally satisfied.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Have a clear project to assign them and they’ll do it. It’s pretty straight-forward.
