Together with LeanyLabs we have developed an app for monday.com, which allows us to synchronize data from an external project management tool into monday.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We became aware of LeanyLabs through their website. After an excellent first contact and good negotiations we decided to implement the project together with LeanyLabs.

Together we developed a solution that met the requirements of our client. Since the apps integration in monday.com is still in its beginning stages, there were some challenges to overcome. The developer dealt well with the difficulties and the first result was as good as I have seen from any other offshore company. Errors were almost nonexistent and the rest were quickly fixed.

There were 3 people working with us. We had the most contact with the project manager and the developer. The contact was always very friendly and we felt well understood at all times.

As already mentioned above. The first version was already very clean and without many errors. I was very impressed.

Tomorrow.io is a SaaS company in the weather industry. We provide solutions to our customers to help them make decisions for their business around the weather. We have many customers worldwide, and we work for various industries, including airlines, on-demand services, meteorology-related companies, trucking and shipping companies, and seaports.

We have around 150 employees, and our products include an API, a web application, a mobile app, and regular B2C apps for weather that anyone can consume.

What challenge were you trying to address with LeanyLabs?

We were expanding as an engineering company. However, we found a hard time doing so in our current sites, the US and Israel, so LeanyLabs helped us expand.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

LeanyLabs provides us with an offshore R&D center in Ukraine, so they act as an additional engineering team for our company. Their developers work on our B2C weather web app, offering complete full-stack development services. Thus, they develop both our system’s backend services and the web-based application itself.

LeanyLabs’ team developed that system from scratch, working directly with our project manager. This person guided them on how to create it. Now, they maintain it in production and continue developing it. The technology stack that they use includes JavaScript, React.js, Redux, Node.js, Docker, MongoDB, Redis, and the Google Cloud Platform.

What is the team composition?

We have four people from LeanyLabs working on the R&D center: three developers and a team leader. They all collaborate with people in our company.

How did you come to work with LeanyLabs?

I found LeanyLabs through a personal acquaintance. This person and I worked together on another company.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent around $150,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working in October 2020, and our engagement is ongoing. We plan to keep working with them, so we don’t have a finish line anytime soon.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We’re satisfied with LeanyLabs’ deliveries, work, cadence, and day-to-day efforts, and, ultimately, we’re pleased with the results. The web app looks good, handles production well, and works well for our customers.

I have nothing but positive feedback on LeanyLabs’ work. On web development, they’re very professional; they know their work, do it well, and produce quality deliverables on time and within budget.

As for LeanyLabs’ organizational culture, I can say that they’re reliable and trustworthy. I trust in what they say and in the feedback that they provide. Additionally, I can give them feedback, positive or constructive, and they take it into consideration. Overall, they’re a good company to work with.

How did LeanyLabs perform from a project management standpoint?

We have standards on managing engineering within our company, and LeanyLabs has adjusted their processes to ours. We work using an Agile development process, so we work daily with a product manager to prioritize, scope, and implement tasks.

They’ve implemented our process quite well. They’re great at estimating work, communicating the status, and working according to the estimated plan. Overall, LeanyLabs manages the progress as expected.

We communicate with them as with any other of our employees. They’re on our Slack channels, Zoom meetings, and emails. Most of our work is remote, so we collaborate and share information using tools like GitHub for source control, Confluence to share data and team knowledge, and Jira to manage tasks.

What did you find most impressive about them?

As LeanyLabs is a small company, their approach is very familiar. They don’t feel like a corporation, and their processes are less bureaucratic and more flexible towards our needs. This characteristic differentiates them from their competitors, which are mostly large corporations.

LeanyLabs has been flexible to our needs, adjusting their hiring process, development approach, and technology stack. Additionally, they feel like part of our team. We’re not just a client among hundreds of other clients, and we get the service we need when and how we need it.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The fact that LeanyLabs is a small company makes it difficult for them to adapt to large changes. For example, if we needed to grow fast, it wouldn't be easy for them, and it may take time. However, that’s not their fault; they’re just a small company, and they don’t have a large pool of employees to move around on short notice.

It would also be good if they could add various positions to their company to provide more services. Currently, they mainly provide full-stack developers. However, in order to grow as a company, they should also offer DevOps, QA engineers, product managers, and other experts to create entire teams.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Match your expectations with LeanyLabs. Talk to them about what’s important for you and what people you want them to bring. Additionally, tell them how you want them to work, whether you need an extension of your team or a completely new team.

You can also let them develop your entire product, and they can just hand it to you at the end. Thus, think well about how involved you want them to be. I also recommend you to have a technical person of your team involved in the whole process, no matter how you decide to engage with them. This person will help you acquire all the knowledge so that nothing is lost if you decide to end the engagement early.

I’m the CEO of a production company. We started producing movie commercials and moved to doing 360-support for our clients. We began to work on design and UX/UI, as well as demos.

We give service to a big, high-tech corporation that’s one of the global leaders of the telecommunications industry. They provide Business Support Systems (BSS) and Operations Support Systems (OSS). We develop demos and tools for them to sell to their clients.

We do the creative and UX/UI part of the demos, and we hired LeanyLabs as an outsourcing company to program the tools we develop.

For example, one of our clients wants to create a new marketplace in their app for end users, so we have to develop the tool to onboard their services. It’s somewhat complicated because we are servicing a huge corporation.

LeanyLabs programs and develops the HTML demo tools for our client’s products, so they develop the tools that we deliver to the end client.

We basically work as a team, sometimes even in the designing stages. They advise us on which way we could make it better and are involved in the process.

I was urgently looking for professional and cost-effective solutions outside of Israel, since the developer price rate here is extremely high. A friend of mine was working at a big internet company, and I asked him if he had someone to recommend.

It was very important for me to know I could trust the person I was hiring, since it was someone abroad. I needed to be sure that they were going to deliver even without meeting them. My close friend recommended Mykolas. He told me that he worked with them all the time, that they were very pleased, and that I could trust him.

So far, we’ve invested between $17,000–$20,000.

We started working together around April 2020, and we’re still working on new projects.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The clients have been very satisfied with the projects — I just got some feedback from one of them. LeanyLabs wasn’t really engaged with them; they were only present one time on some calls when the end client needed a developer. However, our clients have been extremely pleased.

LeanyLabs has started contacting our client directly. They asked to speak to Mykola when they had some issues, and I think that says a lot.

How did LeanyLabs perform from a project management standpoint?

We usually contact them through any video call platform. First, I message them on WhatsApp or Facebook, and then we schedule a meeting, usually on Google Meet. Working with them is very fluent and easy.

What did you find most impressive about them?

It’s a combination of their can-do approach and dedication. If I tell them that we have to push, they might tell me it’s impossible, but they still make an effort. Sometimes, they even accomplish it.

Additionally, their responsiveness is amazing. Whenever I need Mykola, he always responds very quickly — it doesn’t matter if it’s the middle of the night or over the weekend.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Maybe it’s a culture gap, but they’re extremely serious. I don’t think this is something they need to improve, but I often find myself telling Mykola that everything is okay, and he needs to relax.

Any advice for potential customers?

Be accurate or as close to accurate as the scope of work; it’s very relevant to the development team. They don’t like surprises because it can change the scope of work by a significant amount of hours. If you’re not sure that something is going to be final, you need to mention that in the beginning. It will be for the best.

The project is still ongoing. So far, we are extremely satisfied with the team's dedication and the quality of the product. We have a lot of confidence in the quality of the project and the communication between the teams is excellent. So far, we received positive feedback from people who worked with the platform or saw it.

We use emails, Slack and Trello for task management. We are happy with the transparency and the timeline.

Working with a development team outside of the organization is very challenging and we had a lot of concerns about it. The high standards of LeannyLabs and the 24/7 communication really helped to build trust . They have proven that the project is in good hands.

Some of the features still require QA and fixes from our team.

I'm CEO at CryptoDividend. It's a directory that lists crypto projects and calculates dividend ROI for them. I also have other crypto startups on the side.

LeanyLabs have developed CryptoDividend from start to finish. I also use their consulting services for complicated parts of my other projects.

What were your goals for this project?

At first, I wanted to have the ROI data to make better crypto investment decisions for myself. After seeing the web UI, we decided to polish it and make the project public.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

I had previous working experience with them a few years ago. One of the co-founders was fixing bugs on my other project as a freelancer.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

CryptoDivided gathers data for different crypto projects from EOS and TRON blockchains, calculates metrics, and displays them on the web pages.

They've designed the system. Wrote the code to gather data for each listed project and provided a way to enter the data manually through Google Sheets. That way we could populate historical data for newly listed projects and support projects that aren't updated automatically.

LeanyLabs also created the web interface: designed, coded, and configured hosting for me. They've proposed server-side rendering to rank well on Google and indeed we were ranking #1 for a couple of relevant keywords.

What was the team composition?

I worked with them on a project basis. From what I know, they had one developer working on the blockchain integration and another one on the front end. Later, the third programmer added support for Google Sheets, server-side rendering, and configured hosting on AWS with CDN.

LeanyLabs also found the freelance designer to do the designs. One of the developers was my contact person and I usually discussed everything with him.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

The project paid for itself only with the advertisement revenue for banners that I've sold and "sponsored" listing positions. It achieved the original goal too - I've made a couple of good decisions based on the data and avoided costly mistakes when the crypto divided industry turned to scams.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

I had one contact person. He was asking questions, suggesting improvements, and reported the progress on a regular basis. I guess he also was responsible for project management. Everything went fast and smooth. I don't know many details. For consulting, I have direct contact with one of their lead engineers.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They work incredibly fast. They suggest good ideas. It almost felt like they know more in my industry than I do. They also helped me to hire a good in-house developer for the routine tasks. That's unusual for a service company to knowingly help to reduce the work they could otherwise get.

Are there any areas for improvement?

When looking only at rates, they are definitely on the expensive side. But considering their speed, it turned out even cheaper than other companies estimated. They are often busy, and I have to schedule the consultancy.

Their technical ability is amazing. I’m able to present them with any technical challenge whether they have experience or not. Then, they do the research, ask me questions, and help me with everything that I need to do.

For example, we had a very complicated feature to develop which had both development parts to it as well as DevOps parts to it. Everyone in the company was new to the technology, but they led it and they did it pretty well and we were very impressed with their ability to understand this stuff and deliver it.

How did LeanyLabs perform from a project management standpoint?

We use monday.com for project management which is the same tool we use internally. I don’t see them as an outsourced solution, but more as an integrated part of our company.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I get the feeling that I can trust them and I’m really confident in their ability to deliver and make the right decision. I am very impressed with the fact that I don’t need to predefine everything into a lot of details. I can point them in the right direction, and they will start to pursue it, and ask me whatever they need to in order to achieve the goal. It is a very low touch engagement in a good way. It is not that they don’t communicate with us, but more in the way that they don’t require a lot of maintenance.
