We are a lighting designer and smart home company. We work on local projects and have our own development capabilities. We do local lighting design/system integration projects but sell our products worldwide.

What is your position?

I am the founder and owner of the company.

What business challenge were you trying to address with KTree?

We'd had trial runs with other companies for this project. It's not complicated as far as coding goes, but understanding our core idea has proven complex. We need a tool for smart home configuration. If the developer doesn't understand smart homes as an idea, they won't understand what we need from them. This has been the challenge with all of the contractors we've used so far.

I had worked with a supplier who couldn't fulfill my requirements on a previous project. I came across KTree, asked them to work on a project, it went well, and they gradually took over our other development work.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement.

We originally worked together on a smaller project consisting of a web configurator for our smart home app, featuring drag-and-drop elements, and settings for each element (buttons) in the app.

Although the apps are available in iOS, KTree has also developed for web-apps. We have an XML [Extensible Markup Language] interface, which can be downloaded into our apps.

I work closely with their systems architect and a few project managers. I don't interact with the actual developers assigned to our project. Being able to contact them would have been an advantage at certain times, as I could have explained certain requirements directly. Some information is always lost if it's mediated through another person. At the same time, I don't necessarily know what their communication skills were, so it might not have been advantageous as it could have been.

How did you come to work with KTree?

I typically find developers on services like Upwork. I posted a job, and KTree contacted me, quoting a price. It was only a small project, but they completed it without any hassle. I offered them a bigger job from there, and the path continued.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

The whole project size is around $100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together almost three years ago. We have an ongoing relationship.

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

Development is done in stages. KTree quote us prices for each element, estimating the number of development hours it should take, and we continue from there.

The tool they're working on currently is in development stages, and hasn't been out on the market yet. The tools have just been delivered but we haven’t started to sell them yet. They are now working on add-ons.

The previous tool KTree built for us has been well-received internally, proving to us that they could solve our problems, as opposed to our previous developer.

How did KTree perform from a project management standpoint?

Each project is started with requirement documents. Then, we have skype meetings to go through the requirements to ensure everyone grasps what we are trying to accomplish. After that, they do a mockup to show me that they have understood my requirements. Bug reports are shared via excel spreadsheets, which are shared once a week.

The spreadsheets include work report numbers, a list of bug fixes and their status. They explain what has been completed or not, and which elements require more information.

We don't use any specific project management or collaboration tools. Documentation is exchanged via email.

What distinguishes KTree from other providers?

They stick to their promises. If KTree engages on a certain task for a set price, they will do it without hassle. They won't stop mid-way and ask for more money. This is uncommon among offshore freelancers and subcontractors.

Is there anything KTree could have improved or done differently?

I couldn't comment about their actual iOS and Android development skills, but they could improve their references for these capabilities. When researching their company, I found information in this area to be lacking.

Design philosophies differ between India and Europe, with the latter customers preferring more serious-looking products. I realized that, if I was to obtain the product I wanted, I would need to hire a European designer. It would be good if KTree offered this kind of talent in their company. It's possible that they have the right designers but have opted not to use them. We decided in the early stages of development that we would be using local designers.

We're a multi-brand fashion company, handling more than fifty brands. We operate over sixty stores in Belgium, offering mainstream fashion clothes.

We were looking for a new partner for Magento e-commerce development. Our previous company was not delivering features within a reasonable timeframe.

They have assigned six developers to our project. Selecting developers was their responsibility and we left that up to them. We never had issues with that and never needed to replace resources.

We researched the market and because a member of our team had experience with development companies in India, we chose this route. We considered three other vendors besides KTree, and also looked into hiring developers internally.

The reason we chose outsourcing was not for saving costs, as we're spending the same amount of money, but for a much faster delivery. We can achieve more goals in the same timeframe. This ultimately equates to a more cost-effective approach.

Our conversion rates have increased by about 40% since starting our development work with KTree. Everything we’ve implemented has had a quantifiable result.

How did KTree perform from a project management standpoint?

They have a sprint development process. We make planning based on their estimates, and we've always managed to achieve our desired goals on time and within budget. We use Trello as a development platform.

What distinguishes KTree from other providers?

They focus primarily on open source technologies, which was exactly what we needed. They made some extremely valuable recommendations.

We employ them for feature addition, bug resolution, and cloud application support. They helped us build and manage our network.

They had experience in developing software applications as well as working with integrating open source applications.

We'd worked with other outsourcing providers. We did research and provided applicants test cases for coding work. We looked at the quality of code produced and, based on it, decided to hire KTree. We considered four other vendors – three offshore and one onshore.

The total cost for our work has been between $200,000 and $1 million.

KTree was very responsive and worked extremely long hours when they needed to. If any sort of issue came up, they would respond to it, whether it was at 2 a.m. their time or during the weekend. They put great effort into building the application.

The turnaround of the project was reasonable. KTree is a big enough company to have expertise in many different areas and were able to offer us a core group knowledgeable in our particular field. The longevity of their developers is remarkable.

We used JIRA and Bitbucket for project management. The tools used were proposed by us early on in the engagement.
