Since 1923, Conrad Electronic has been at the forefront of technology and electronics. Now being a sourcing platform, the company supplies products and services to businesses and private customers both online and via retail outlets. The family-owned business is based in Hirschau (Eastern Bavaria), operates in 16 different European countries, and is among the leading omni-channel retailers offering convenient one-stop shopping. Companies use the Conrad Sourcing Platform to purchase all the technical supplies their business needs from one supplier. My position at the company is Director of Digital UX Development.

Growcode was hired to improve our frontend and UX design. Our collaboration was expected to result in an improved e-commerce conversion rate and drive revenue growth.

Growcode has done similar projects for us for the Polish and Dutch markets. Teams there were satisfied with the communication and the results, so we decided to cooperate with Growcode for the German market as well.

Describe the project in detail and walk through the stages of the project.

The first stage of our collaboration was conducting a series of quantitative and qualitative research studies and using UX heuristics to identify conversion rate growth opportunities. These analyses resulted in a series of hypotheses about what could be improved. These hypotheses were then used to create sprint plans. During the sprints, Growcode first prepared mockups and then designed the changes that needed to be made.

Following our approval of these changes, Growcode was responsible for their implementation and A/B testing to verify how improvements affected the conversion rate and revenue growth. The optimization sprints were conducted with an iterative approach. The results of each sprint were taken into account and influenced the next steps to be taken.

The main point of contact was the project manager who coordinated the whole team, consisting of a digital analyst, a UX specialist, a graphic designer and 3 front-end developers.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Five optimization sprints and developing 25 different variants of our website resulted in changes in mobile and desktop devices’ product pages. Listings and search results were also improved. A/B testing showed that changes made during the collaboration resulted in a 7% increase of the conversion rate on specific pages and an increase in the average order value. Given the scale of our business, this translates into nice uplifts of additional revenue.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

First of all, the amount of work on our side was larger than we expected, especially in terms of alignment of the proposed A/B Tests, quality assurance, and the feedback process back to Growcode. We stated this during the cooperation, and our Project Manager was trying to ease the process and always quick responding.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They quickly adapted to the results and feedback that they received from our customers.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

The first changes that were developed could have been smaller to give us time to learn how to implement them and how they affect our business. The project afforded higher involvement than we originally expected. It would be good if the expected time needed to implement & test changes was stated out more prominent in the beginning of the project.

I’m the CEO and owner of MyGiftDNA.pl, an online store that sells personalized, unique gifts for every occasion imaginable, from birthdays to Christmas to fiftieth wedding anniversaries.

Growcode has conducted over 40 conversion rate experiments in our year-long cooperation. They began by performing an audit and brainstorming ideas for potential changes. Each theory was A/B tested, and only the highest performers were implemented. Many of their efforts revolved around making modifications to our shopping cart, checkout, product, and category pages.

We were assigned a dedicated team. Most of our interactions were with a team leader, but we also had access to specific team members if we needed it. The team was comprised of a project manager, a graphic designer, a UX specialist, and several frontend developers.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We saw a 40% boost in our overall conversion rate for a cost-effective price. Additionally, our holiday shopping frenzy lasted a week longer than it usually does!

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Their communication was effective and clear, and they provided us with regular progress updates. Our progress was slower than I would have liked at times, but, overall, I can’t complain. Their team leader was also available to contact directly at all times.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Their holistic methodology and technical expertise gave me a lot of confidence. They approach e-commerce optimization comprehensively, covering everything from data analysis to design and coding.

Are there any areas for improvement?

My one criticism was that the project could have been faster. I would happily have paid the same amount for half of the period and double the intensity.

I'm head of marketing at Hairstore. We sell haircare products like cosmetics, small electronic goods, and professional equipment. We also focus on high-quality face and body cosmetics. We already sell 250 brands and are constantly looking for new, interesting products. We aim to create a place where customers can buy high-quality cosmetics with fast, inexpensive delivery.

We wanted to achieve at least a 10% lift in our conversion rate. Ideally, we wanted to see a 20% to 40% increase.

How did you select this vendor?

Growcode spoke with us on the phone and conducted a short business analysis to understand our situation. Next, they prepared a webinar to demonstrate how they could improve our store. Finally, we had a short video call to discuss working together.

The project took six months. During this time, Growcode conducted four optimization sprints. Each sprint had seven steps: analyzing user behavior, creating recommendations from data, designing low-fidelity prototypes, designing graphics, coding in Swift, running A/B tests, and analyzing implementations. We had different strategies for mobile and desktop.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

The statistical significance of the first sprint wasn't sufficient. After the second sprint, however, we saw a 10% conversion rate increase on mobile and an 8% increase on desktop. The third sprint boosted our average order value by 17% on mobile and increased desktop conversions by 9%. The fourth sprint improved our desktop conversion rate by 11%.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

We used Basecamp to manage the whole project and had a video conference to discuss the results of every milestone. We had a direct phone number for the team lead. When we got stuck and didn’t respond, they kindly reminded us to stay on the right track.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

The quality of our communication was a big positive. Growcode described benchmarks clearly and kept us on the right track. We could measure the results of their work and specifically tie them to additional revenue, which made it easy to gauge a clear ROI.

Conducting the whole project without involving our web developers was also great. It took only a few minutes at the beginning of our cooperation to implement a small JavaScript snippet. 

Are there any areas where they can improve?

The first analysis could have been more in-depth. It would have been good to get a clear, early idea of what was possible.
