**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?Improved system functionality and increased reporting.Describe their project management. Did they deliver items on time? How did they respond to your needs?Gnar were incredibly easy to work with and stayed in constant communication. I felt comfortable with both the plan and the progress we were making on most elements of the work. They created a Slack channel for near-real-time communication, in addition to weekly progress updates and, during the enhancement phase, weekly meetings to review and prioritize requirements, which was particularly helpful when we were unable to complete testing or provide inputs timely. They immediately flagged any potential changes to scope and provided options and quotes for new work. When we had out-of-scope requests (e.g., updating security on the production system), they engaged the appropriate resources and managed the work without seriously impacting schedule. What was your primary form of communication with The Gnar Company?Virtual MeetingWhat did you find most impressive or unique about this company? The people! From the first conversation, Pete and Mike were open and curious about our project and, more importantly, about our company and how this project helped us help our clients. We had a dedicated developer, which provided continuity and allowed us to work better together as we got to know each other. When we needed to change staff (for their reasons or ours), they were transparent about how to do so, and why, and made sure new staff were the right fit for our team. I always felt like they cared about us and our success more than just completing the work. Are there any areas for improvement or something The Gnar Company could have done differently?I wish we would have spent more time in discovery and requirements mapping up front. Because we prioritized the upgrade to current software, then launched right into the enhancements, we ended up limiting some desired system functionality. Gnar did a great job of fulfilling our requirements, but we would have changed some of the requirements had I had a better up-front understanding of how the system and data were designed.

We hired Gnar to help us scale our API onboarding and support, which also reduced the load on our core engineering team to let them focus on building our product. Our engineering team spent a fraction of their time (from many hours per week down to < 1 hour per week) supporting API customers. Instead, we mostly interfaced with Gnar who gave us consolidated feedback & detailed bug reports.

I found them while searching for local development shops on Clutch!

Describe the project in detail and walk through the stages of the project.

The work was comprised of several self-contained mini-projects, including connecting our system to third-party services. I wrote up the requirements as JIRA tickets, and we took advantage of a visual designer from Gnar as well for one of the mini-projects.

The engineer assigned to us was able to work through these tickets to build the features, and adapted easily as we changed things along the way.

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your company and your position there.

I'm the CEO of a Series B SaaS B2B Startup that sells IT/Endpoint Security Software.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
For what projects/services did your company hire The Gnar Company?

Shortly after raising our Series B we needed to find qualified Rails devs to augment our existing team while we began our hiring process.

**SOLUTION**
How did you select this agency and what were the deciding factors?

The local Boston community and the folks I'm connected with know Mike and the other folks at Gnar. I've have many successful engagements with them and knew this one would also work well. They also have a knack for hiring folks that share similar culture values to Kolide employees.

Describe the project in detail and walk through the stages of the project.

Project was a simple staff augmentation where a Gnar engineer is working on our core SaaS product, usually on things outside of the critical path.

Describe the recruitment process in detail.

I called up Mike, he was having a baby so I spoke instead with Pete who quickly got us matched with a suitable engineer.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Can you share any outcomes from the engagement that demonstrate progress or success?

Yes Alex has helped us with various long-form projects like upgrading major dependencies that require changing hundreds of files across our code base, or helping us build out various aspects of our marketing website (like portions of our new blog system) and has been a major asset to other departments at Kolide looking for engineering support. I very rarely have to over-prescribe the work, Alex does a great job of listening to stakeholders which requires less work for me to best define a solution.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Working with Alex feels just like working with the engineers that work at Kolide. He is a treat.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They quickly knew exactly what they were looking for, and they've got us matched up with a perfect-fit engineer.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

None! We love working for Gnar and look forward to considering them for more specific projects beyond staff augmentation.

**The Review** — Mar 31, 2022

**Feedback Summary**: The client was happy with the quality and speed of The Gnar Company’s work and their great advice about long-term development strategies. The team communicated effectively via Slack and video calls and used Linear for project management. They were flexible in finding the right resources.
"“The team was great at implementation, and they guided us on how to build an infrastructure to underlie our app.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m an engineer at a small startup. We’re developing consumer software targeted at legal services; we build web apps and third-party integrations. Our engineering team was previously 1–2 people, and we’re now up to three teammates.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with The Gnar Company?

We needed development staff augmentation. We brought Gnar on board very early in the development of a product that we were building from scratch.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Gnar augmented our engineering team by embedding two resources who worked work us in building a web application from scratch. The app had a Python web server and a React frontend. The Gnar team worked exclusively in the React run.

They suggested candidates for us, and we talked to and screened 3–4 different Gnar employees to see who was the best fit for us. I onboarded the first candidate into our company, our software, and our tools. When the second person came into the project, they worked together on the onboarding process.

What is the team composition?

We worked with no more than two Gnar employees at a time. In total, we worked with four different people.

How did you come to work with The Gnar Company?

They were a recommendation from someone in our network. We spoke with a few different options, both individuals we knew and firms similar to Gnar that offered engineering services at a fixed price point. Gnar was well-positioned with the technical expertise we were looking for, and they had engineers available, so they were a good fit for us.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent just over $100,000. We paid Gnar directly, and they were in charge of the payroll of the employees embedded in our team.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from February—December 2021.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I worked with Gnar very closely, and the measurement of their success was the quality and speed of their code development.

How did The Gnar Company perform from a project management standpoint?

The first Gnar employee embedded in our team wasn’t a good fit for us regarding communication; they didn’t communicate or project manage well. We worked with Gnar on replacing that resource, and a senior contractor came into our team. He was a very strong communicator and planner and good at project timeline management. Ultimately, their project management performance in the last nine months of the project was very solid.

We used a tool called Linear to manage the project. Most of our communication happened either on Slack or video calls. Beyond that, we occasionally used project documents.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Gnar was flexible and understanding in finding the right people for the project. The resources embedded in our team were excellent at frontend infrastructure. The team was great at implementation, and they guided us on how to build an infrastructure to underlie our app. They were able to advise us on good long-term approaches and strategies for frontend development.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The main frustration point for us was the experience level of certain team members with the technologies we were using. The first resource they gave us was not a great fit, and they had people who were still learning. We would have had a better experience earlier on if we had had people who had more experience from the start. This issue comes with a caveat because they did provide us with a lead engineer who was very strong in our tech stack. Although this issue ended up being fixed, it was a source of problems at the start.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I would advise you to speak with whoever will be embedded on your team; figure out how comfortable they are with your tech stack and what level of communication and project management they expect. Decide whether you’re going to delegate at a task or project level. From there, figure out who from Gnar will be capable of planning that and how much communication they need from you to succeed on the task and project levels.

In our experience, the expertise level of Gnar teammates varied quite a bit, from very little to extremely experienced. So, I would advise you to evaluate that level of expertise, which will be a key step if you consider hiring Gnar contractors.

**The Review** — Mar 23, 2022

**Feedback Summary**: The company has been pleased with The Gnar Company’s work in terms of producing results relative to their funds. The team has also been thoughtful and communicative, helping the client make good business decisions and find alternative solutions for their goals. Overall, they do high-quality work.
"“Their outputs have strong foundations and are truly well-thought-out.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder and CEO of Wealth Kitchen, a financial aggregation app for individuals and families. Unlike other financial aggregation platforms that let users track their finances by themselves, our app can be used to connect with a human financial advisor.

On the other side of the equation, our app provides financial advisors with a UI design that helps them structure their day and take care of their clients in a better way. That sounds simple, but it’s harder than ever to do that in a day and age where the COVID-19 pandemic exists.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with The Gnar Company?

I started the business in late 2020 and while doing our fundraising efforts, I wanted to find a co-founder that could handle the design and engineering part of the business. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was difficult to go out and network with people.

As a result, I conferred with investors and customers to know whether or not my idea was worth pursuing. When they said yes, the first thing I did was to find a high-quality outsourced engineering firm. That way, I could continue to build the app while I was looking for a technical co-founder.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Gnar currently serves as my CTO-for-hire partner. They’re working on our development tasks. Since we’re a fairly early-stage company, the bulk of the work we do revolves around building the prototype of our product.

What is the team composition?

My first point of contact has been with Pete (Head of Growth & Client Service), though I don’t work with him on a daily basis. I also work with Mike (Co-Founder); he oversees the development engineers that work full-time on the project. I’ve also engaged with some of their design specialists who’ve designed the wireframes of the product. Finally, a full-time engineer works with us for 40 hours per week.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve invested around $75,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in November 2021, and the engagement is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Since I’m a technical person, I’ve been judging Gnar’s performance based on my feelings of where we should be. That’s not necessarily quantifiable. For instance, I’ve had no real concept of how long it would take to establish the foundation of the software product. I’ve had a good idea of what it would cost, but I’ve had no specific success metrics or KPIs.

As a result, I’m more focused on tracking our initial funding and making it last over a period of time. During that time, I should be able to show some progress so that I can continue to raise funds. From that standpoint, my engagement with Gnar has gone well.

How did The Gnar Company perform from a project management standpoint?

For communication, the Gnar team is always thinking about what I want versus what our expectations should be in terms of timing and costs. In other words, they help make important business decisions; they acknowledge what I want to do but also help me understand the alternatives we have. In a nutshell, their thoughtfulness and communication have blown me away.

In terms of tools, we’ve used Netlify, GitHub, Trello, Google Analytics, and Google Tag Manager. We’ve also used Slack to communicate. I’ve also initiated an integration with Plaid — a financial product development tool — which isn’t necessarily a part of our coding environment but is critical to our overall workflow.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I get what I pay for; Gnar’s services are expensive — make no mistake about it — but that forces me to be thoughtful when it comes to fundraising and managing cash. On top of that, they also do great work. Their outputs have strong foundations and are truly well-thought-out.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There have been times when I wish they’d asked me about the higher-level, longer-term business rationale for why I want to do something. Sometimes, I have to spend a few minutes by myself wondering if they truly understand why a particular piece of work is extremely important to me. I value their feedback and honest communication, so they can also ask me what I’m trying to do with my business idea.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Know that Gnar is expensive, but you’ll receive high-quality work. If you’re trying to save money and have a much smaller budget, they might not be the right team for you — you can’t buy a Ferrari if you can’t afford one. Overall, you get what you pay for when working with them.

**The Review** — Sep 14, 2021

**Feedback Summary**: The Gnar Company had produced an exceptional product by the end of the project and the company noted all of the good ideas they contributed throughout the process. The company found everything about the team impressive but noted their communication skills as their standout asset.
""I found everything impressive about GNAR.""

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your company and your position there.

I am the CEO of a financial data and document distribution firm to investment management firms.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
For what projects/services did your company hire The Gnar Company, and what were your goals?

We were spending countless hours manually dissecting and reporting mass amounts of data to a large number of industry databases in varying formats. We wanted to remove the margin for error with built in detection, expedite our reporting and streamline the data flow from our managers.  We realized to remain competitive in our market we needed to automate our process.  We hired GNAR to built a manager portal and a proprietary software solution to automate our client data for distribution by us.

**SOLUTION**
How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We did a comprehensive search and spoke with 5 firms in total.  It was clear from my initial conversation GNAR was the perfect fit.  While cost was a factor, more critical to my decision was the firm understood, on some level, the financial industry to better understand our end goals.   In my first conversations with Pete Whiting, Director of Marketing, it was evident he understood my firm and what I was trying to achieve.

He also offered some valuable input with ideas I hadn't conisidered.  Speaking with some of the development team it was evident they we highly skilled and the right match for us as well.  Personality was also key, we had a lot of work to do together so fit was important and they were all awesome to work with!

Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.

The project involved developing a manager portal & software application to automate mass amounts of data to very specific individualized template formats for reporting to external databases.  We started with a discovery phase to assess the project, cost and expected deliverables.  Impressed, I hired them at that point and we created a scope of work outlining the project and timeline.  I worked with a senior developer to design/develop the user interface.

Then moved on to work with 2 additionla senior developers to code the software.  Prior to starting, we reviewed at length, the data being reported and output expectations for every template we needed to automate to.  This was a very in-depth process for all involved.  We used Trello to track progress, Heroku to build the application and AWS to host it.

How many people from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

Pete Whiting, Head of Marketing and Client Service was my initial point of contact for the discovery phase.  He participated in weekly development calls and stayed on top of the entire project end to end.  Josh Hathaway, Jon Yurek and Ethan Fertsch were all senior developers on my team when we started, each playing a different role.

Josh built the user interface while Jon and Ethan developed the coding for the software.  All were impressive with their skillset and knowleadge and fantastic to work with!

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We had calls every Monday morning to review Trello Board and discuss expected outcomes for the week.  We had a call every Friday to discuss how the week went, deliverables and any issues we encountered in the week. We also discussed any concerns at that time.

Nothing is without hiccups, mainly on our end in capturing very specific buckets for the mass amount of data output required.  They produced an exceptional product on time and had really great ideas throughout the entire process.

Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.

I was extremely impressed with the communication at GNAR from day one.  They excel in this area which was important given the complexity around this project.  We used Trello to communicate around tasks and deliverables and had scheduled calls every Monday & Friday.

What did you find most impressive or unique a

I found everything impressive about GNAR.  Each individual I worked with was highly skilled in their respective roles and all fantastic to work with.  The communication was exceptionla and they offered out great ideas, more efficient ways things could be done if applicable and were cost conscious.  I would recommend them to anyone.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

No.  These guys were on point start to finish. If something could be done more efficiently they made a suggestion and we made changes.  I was extremely pleased with all aspects of the project.

**The Review** — Feb 25, 2021

**Feedback Summary**: Beyond delivering high-quality code, The Gnar Company facilitated a professional engagement and helped the client drive their software in the right direction. The team was enthusiastic and capable. Customers can expect a collaborative partner with extensive experience in the technology space.
"“I was very pleased with the interaction that we had and the deliverables that we expected of them.”
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m an engineering manager at a two-sided marketplace for business catering. We service people looking for catering services, as well as catering partners who want to get their restaurants or businesses online to sell their services.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with The Gnar Company?

We needed some capable and expert-level engineers to supplement our internal team.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

The Gnar Company provided staff augmentation services. They were hands-on software engineers who wrote and tested code. The resources collaborated with us to make sure that they were working on the right tasks.

They were fully embedded in our team. We didn’t have a narrow scope or fixed deliverables; rather, we knew we’d need The Gnar Company’s help for three or more months. They did a lot of their work in Ruby on Rails.

What is the team composition?

We worked with two developers, one of whom was also a partner of The Gnar Company,

How did you come to work with The Gnar Company?

One of their developers was already working with my company when I joined. Then, I knew the other developer from the industry as well as locally. I was familiar with both The Gnar Company’s work and each individual’s work.

How much have you invested with them?

My company spent $10,000–$50,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from August–December 2019.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The quality of their code was really good — it was well-tested and well-factored. It was clear that they’d been working with technology for a long time. The code is still in production today.

From an interpersonal perspective, they were very professional, collaborative, and insightful, all of which are as important as the quality of the code. They were really great partners, not only in getting the work done but also in helping us drive the software in the right direction.

How did The Gnar Company perform from a project management standpoint?

They performed really well. They were on time, and when expectations were set, they met them. The team overcommunicated when they needed to. They used the project management tools we had in place. I was very pleased with the interaction that we had and the deliverables that we expected of them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The Gnar Company’s professionalism, enthusiasm, and ownership of the technology space distinguished them. I never felt that they wouldn’t be able to do anything that we threw at them — they were ultra-capable and ultra-enthusiastic about the type and level of work that we were looking for.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don’t think so — I would hire them again.

Any advice for potential customers?

Make sure that everything lines up in terms of what the client needs and the Gnar resource implementing it. They’re experts at what they do; I’d just find the right person to slot into what you need to get the most out of the engagement.

The team adopted internal project management tools and effectively deployed them. Their seamless integration with the internal team mitigated any concerns about disruption.
""I was impressed with their ability to hit the ground running."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the VP of engineering at a large advertising technology company.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with The Gnar Company?

The company wanted to plug a recently acquired startup into a larger application. The project had aggressive timelines, so we needed to engage resources that could help us meet our existing commitments and timeline for delivering this larger application.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

The Gnar worked alongside our existing engineering team to build the product. Their team used Go— a backend language — and React on the frontend.

We had two consultants from The Gnar join our company. They operated as software engineers on my team.

How did you come to work with The Gnar Company?

A friend of mine recommended The Gnar after working with their team.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started in December 2019 and ended in May 2020.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I would describe the engagement as highly successful. We were concerned about adding people into an ongoing project, worrying that it would cause more of a disruption than would return benefits. Based on the quality of The Gnar’s talent, they were able to contribute quickly. Over the course of the project, their team added tremendous value.

How did The Gnar Company perform from a project management standpoint?

The Gnar used all of our tools, so Slack, Gmail, and GitHub. Their team effectively used them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Are there any areas they could improve?

Honestly, they nailed it. The Gnar did great.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Don’t hesitate to reach out to The Gnar.

"“They never fail to deliver.”
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m a project manager in the IT department for a property and casualty insurance company.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with The Gnar Company?

They’re bolstering our in-house development to build a web-based app for our insurance agents.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Using the app, they will be able to enter insurance quotes and submit applications for new insurance policies. They’re basically creating the forms that we need for our core system and validation.

The Gnar Company is using React for the frontend and is providing a lot of expertise in how the UI is built.

What is the team composition?

We just worked with one person.

How did you come to work with The Gnar Company?

A former colleague of mine referred me to them. They were one of 3–4 organizations we considered, but they delivered the best value proposition. They have extensive experience, are flexible, and are willing to integrate with our team. The people seemed like a good fit for our team, too.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent between $250,000–$300,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in April 2020 and the project is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They never fail to deliver. They’ve provided a high-caliber resource and I’m really happy with how we work together. The person we’re working with is a good person and they’ve been able to integrate with our team. We don’t view them as a third-party all. Overall, our experience has been very positive.

How did The Gnar Company perform from a project management standpoint?

They follow an agile framework and work in two-week sprints. There’s a continuous flow of work being delivered.

I speak with our contact weekly and chat with their account manager once a month just to check in on how things are going.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They bring a lot of experience to the project. They also have a positive attitude and are dedicated to the team. As a result, they really help carry our team forward.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, they’ve exceeded our expectations.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Future clients should trust them and take advantage of their extensive knowledge and expertise. We’re using them specifically for the UI, but I think we could have used their advice on other aspects of the project as well.

**The Review** — Dec 10, 2020

**Feedback Summary**: The new application has seen a sizable increase in users over the old solution, and users praise its intuitive navigation. The Gnar Company was transparent in its project management and dedicated stand-out dedication. Future clients will encounter a flexible partner that takes pride in their work.
""We weren’t just a project to them. They catch up and ask how the app is running. They really care about our end-users."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the president of First Line Technology. Our business is focused on building products for first responders and the military that deal with responses to chemical and biological warfare, as well as emergency response. We’ve commercialized a number of products from labs and universities, as well as transitioned into soft products like training.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with The Gnar Company?

One of the key products we sell to first responders is used for multiple types of threats — from Ebola to Coronavirus. We were handing our customers a booklet to carry around, which was difficult, so we wanted to transition that product into an application that would help them combat whatever threat they faced.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

We had another application prior developed by another company. We’d sent it out to users across the country and globe but were stuck because the vendor had only repurposed the old code they had, making it hard to upgrade and transform in the future. Meeting with Gnar Company, our first objective was to look at the old code and see what they could do with it. In the end, we decided they should start from scratch. That was a tough pill to swallow and required us to have a lot of trust in them.

First, we had scoping meetings to discuss what the app (called the Decon Field Guide) would be used for and give Gnar a crash course on how to respond to chemical warfare agents. From there, we talked about redesigning the app and gathering and implementing feedback from customers of the old app. Our internal marketing team did the graphics work, and Gnar built those graphics into the application. They then developed wireframes and moved into development. This all resulted in a cleaner, easier-to-navigate UI. Moving on, they redesigned our WordPress system that linked to the same database as the mobile application used.

Previously, the app was an information guide, but Gnar took it to another level. We shared pain points and they delivered new functionality. Rather than having only text, we now have pictures and images to enhance comprehension. There’s also an index feature that lets customers search for threats, and even corrects typos to show users the information they need even if they typed something in incorrectly. There’s also a timer function that users asked for, which helps customers apply our other products for the correct amount of time when they’re cleaning chemical threats. Gnar also built out analytics features like time-on-page measurements and more. It’s an iOS and Android solution.

What is the team composition?

We worked with 4-5, and Pete (Head of Growth and Client Service) was our main point of contact. We also worked with a UI developer and a programmer (who was quick to turn things around), among others.

How did you come to work with The Gnar Company?

It was by chance, actually. I was frustrated by our old company and the work they’d done, and Gnar happened to email me. I happened to have a trip planned to Boston, where they’re based, in a few weeks and they responded quickly to my asking if I could visit and talk to them about some of our challenges with the application. During that meeting, they immediately started spitballing ideas onto a blackboard. They even looked at the application beforehand. The quote they followed with was a bit over the budget we were looking for since we were hoping to repurpose the old app, but it’s been money absolutely well spent.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around $140,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from January until July 2020. Even though COVID-19, they were able to do everything remotely. We were always going to work remotely but nothing held them down or slowed them up.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We had around 1,800 users on the old application, which is sizable for our industry, but we’re at nearly 3,000 users on the new app. The feedback we’re getting from our end-users call it clean and friendly; they’re actually using it as a reference material as we intended.

Beyond numbers, we wanted people to be engaged on the app, rather than have a dormant solution. Previously, we’d have one user over 2–3 days, and now, we have 10–15 people on the app every day.

We’re not directly using the application — it’s our customers, and their feedback is that it’s a massive improvement. Our first responder community doesn’t get a lot of good apps, and they’re amazed that Gnar was able to deliver exactly what they needed without being first responders themselves.

How did The Gnar Company perform from a project management standpoint?

They used Trello to help us communicate on a regular basis, doing a good job of updating what was pending on both sides. Every week, we had to the point, direct meetings to churn through issues. This really helped us keep pace with where we needed to be. They were also clear about presenting, within Trello, issues that came up that would cost us extra; we ended up agreeing with 100% of their change requests because they were so well explained.

What did you find most impressive about them?

It’s their whole “I care” factor. We weren’t just a project to them. Even now, they catch up and ask how the app is running, and not from a sales standpoint. They really care about our end-users. Project management was key to them, as we wanted to meet some conference and launch-plan deadlines.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Pete has been our main point of contact, and he’s been outstanding. If one of his coders was slowing the project down, he immediately brought in someone new. Explaining some of the issues to a new coder would be the one challenge I would say, but that’s also normal to have to do in business.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Companies are hesitant about explaining what they want as an end-product to folks for privacy concerns, but we told them where we were and what we needed the end to be. From there, we let them present how to get us there. I’m a computer science person, but I gave them a lot more flexibility. I would advise people not to over-control; trust them.

## Portfolio & Awards

### Replacement of Expensive Point SaaS Solutions
A national building materials distributor was managing branch logistics across two separate vendor tools that weren't built to work together, a legacy routing system that locked delivery manifests the moment they were created, and a messaging platform that kept customer and driver conversations siloed from branch managers. Gnar conducted a structured discovery across the branch network, then replaced both vendors with a single, purpose-built AI-assisted logistics platform. The new system introduced digital branch scheduling, drag-and-drop route building with no locked manifests, live fleet tracking via telematics, proof-of-delivery capture (signature + photo), a unified communications hub, AI-assisted route optimization with commercial truck routing, and automated customer SMS delivery notifications. A 90-day pilot across three branches validated the platform before company-wide rollout. The new operations platform replaced two vendor licenses with and ROI under 10 months, saving $250,000 per year in SaaS costs.

### Mobile App Replatforming & Modernization
With 35 inspection offices across North America, this property inspection firm depended on its custom web and React Native mobile inspection apps, which had become buggy, increasingly broken in the field, and impossible to maintain on their AWS Amplify architecture. Gnar replatformed the entire system: migrated all data, rebuilt the backend on a clean PostgreSQL foundation, and by utilizing AI coding assistants as a disciplined core of the development process via Context-Driven Development (CDD), also rebuilt both the React web app and the React Native mobile app within the same timeframe originally scoped for the backend work alone. Every feature went through Gnar's full verification cycle: code quality review, security review, and product owner sign-off before release. The client received a fully rebuilt application suite (backend + web + mobile) with expanded features, delivered at a pace not possible through traditional development. Field inspections that were breaking mid-workflow are now stable.

### Routing Algorithm Modernization and Rearchitecture
This logistics SaaS company's routing algorithm processed over 60,000 orders per day and was quietly failing at the seams. A monolithic, synchronous architecture meant every order triggered dozens of redundant database queries simultaneously, causing system-wide overload and multi-second routing calculations. Gnar started with a structured Ideate engagement to document the existing system, define a modern architecture, and produce a fixed-bid roadmap. Gnar then implemented Redis caching via AWS ElastiCache, moving route map data out of the database and into memory entirely, thus eliminating the per-request load driving the instability. Supporting deliverables included CloudWatch observability instrumentation, a before/after performance dashboard, a load testing framework built from real production payloads, and a self-service cache management tool for operators.  The system moved from the edge of breaking to architected for scale with full observability and a clear architectural path toward the intelligent, modular routing engine their marketplace ambitions require.

### Building Tools to Help Seniors Save on Real Estate
The AARP Foundation serves vulnerable people 50 and older by creating and advancing effective solutions that help them secure the essentials. The organization’s Property Tax-Aide (PTA) group helps low-income older adults stay in their homes and communities by providing access to state-specific property tax refund and credit programs
The Challenge
At the core of PTA’s offering is a suite of digital fintech tools that older adults can use to navigate program applications. There are two components to the Property Tax-Aide tools:
1.The “Eligibility Screener” helps users  determine their eligibility for selected property tax relief programs in their respective state.
2.The “Form Completion Tool” assists users in completing and submitting a property tax relief application form for their state.
As the program continued to grow, the PTA team had concerns about the quality and scalability of these digital tools. Our audit of the existing codebase revealed a number of concerns including a lack of integrated testing, security vulnerabilities, lack of continuous integration and continuous deployment, UX/UI complexity, and lack of compliance with the ADA standards. In addition, these tools were not built in a scalable way, making it time-consuming to make necessary changes.
The Solution
Gnar redesigned and rebuilt these tools using React, JavaScript, and Ruby on Rails. In addition to rebuilding the existing tools we also added new features and tools including a more intuitive UX/UI that reduced the number of required clicks by 40%, on average.   In all Gnar built 14 state-specific real estate digital tools.
The Results
Since rebuilding the tax-aide digital tools, The Gnar Company has maintained and updated them  for each subsequent tax year,as well as building and launching tools for additional states. Since Gnar started working with the AARP Foundation, these digital tools helped over 28,000 people apply for and, if eligible, obtain over $10M in property tax relief.

### Building Uber/Lyft Background Check web App
The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) oversees utility companies and regulates bus, taxi, moving companies, and transportation network company safety in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The Challenge
In August of 2016, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker signed a bill giving the DPU regulatory authority over transportation network companies such as Uber and Lyft. The bill required the TNCs’ ~70,000 drivers to undergo a full state Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) background check. The problem? The DPU's existing background check system typically took eight weeks to conduct a check. There was no way to process all of the necessary information in a timely manner.
The DPU needed to build an accurate, comprehensive, fast-performing background check system that could integrate with multiple databases and APIs—and they needed to build it fast. Such a system had never been built before, and the need presented multiple challenges. The DPU needed to integrate directly with Uber and Lyft's APIs, and it also needed to integrate with eight state and federal databases, including the Massachusetts RMV (Registry of Motor Vehicles), FBI, Bureau of Probation, and Massachusetts Judicial systems. Some of these databases were quite old and weren't built to pull data quickly. Plus, the DPU engineering team had to navigate multiple technical decisions that would hold up if appealed.
The Results
Gnar built a robust system the DPU could count on within 6 months of starting the project. The department realized immediate benefits in time-savings and background check accuracy: it typically takes eight weeks to conduct a background check, but we built a system that provides answers in real-time.
As a result of our system, the DPU was able to identify over 8,000 Uber and Lyft drivers who did not meet the requirements for driving in the state. Our system has helped the DPU do its job—and it helps keep Massachusetts safe.

### Building a Healthcare Mobile App and Web Platform
Torq Interface provides a HIPAA-compliant platform that connects medical device reps and hospitals during surgical planning. Reps are only allowed access to essential surgical procedure data via mobile app in a controlled, real-time exchange with hospitals. The Gnar Company was hired by Torq to build both the mobile app for reps and web software platform for hospitals. Surgical schedules fluctuate dramatically, and real-time updates enable medical device reps to be at the right facility with the right equipment for the patient.  The Gnar Company built the Torq Interface mobile app in React Native and launched both in the Apple App Store and Google Play stores. The app provides real-time surgical info, including dates and times, to medical device reps. Reps can also confirm case receipts with the press of a button so the hospital staff is aware of coverage in real-time.  The web platform was built using Ruby on Rails to provide hospitals a tool for relaying essential, real-time surgical info to vendors, including date, time, surgeon, procedure, side, and equipment notes to medical device reps.  Gnar integrated Torq’s mobile and web applications with Redox to connect to the hospital’s EHR systems to pull the surgery scheduling and procedure information into the platform.

### Designing and Building a Mobile App for Surgeons
Conformis manufactures customized knee and hip replacements. The company helps patients find local surgeons that specialize in Conformis personalized joint replacement procedures. Based on the results of each patient's CT scan, Conformis builds an iView: a surgical plan with precisely tailored dimensions that match the patient’s bone and joint structure. Once surgeons review and approve pre-operative plans (iViews), the joint replacement manufacturing process begins.
The Challenge
Conformis’ existing web app allowed surgeons to preview iViews—but only via desktop computers. The company needed to design and build a mobile app that would allow on-the-go surgeons to review iViews for their upcoming hip or knee cases, as well as expose other surgeons to Conformis content from their mobile devices.
Since this was the company's first mobile app, there were concerns about the cost and complexity of building separate native mobile apps for iOS and Android. Conformis also wanted to ensure the creation of a mobile app that would be consistent with its brand guidelines and optimized for both phones and tablets.
The Results
The mobile app we built allows Conformis surgeons to easily review knee and hip iViews from anywhere. What’s more, we added functionality that enables them to access Conformis surgical technique videos, contact their local sales rep or Conformis customer service, and invite colleagues to download the app.
Non-Conformis surgeons, too, can create accounts using the mobile app, via which they can access sample iViews and other Conformis content. This makes the app not just a useful platform for Conformis users, but a powerful business development tool.

### Building a Print-on-Demand Shopify App
Candlebuilders is a print on demand, drop ship candle manufacturer enabling ecommerce partners to create and sell customized candles in minutes.  The company wanted to grow the number of ecommerce stores selling their customized candles, but ecommerce merchants were struggling to integrate with the company’s software since it was cumbersome and required custom development. Candlebuilders decided to build a Shopify app given the popularity of the Shopify platform and the ability to create Shopify apps to enable easy installation to Shopify stores.
Candlebuilders and The Gnar Company kicked off the work with a Design and Discovery project to define the user flows to enable merchants to design custom candles to sell on their Shopify stores with different scent and vessel size SKUs. The discovery workshop was followed by designing app wireframes and final design comps for the web application, which facilitated a detailed estimate for the development effort. The Shopify app allows Shopify merchants to view, customize (imagery, scent, and vessel size), and add custom candles to their Shopify store. The customized candles purchased by customers will be fulfilled by Candlebuilders. The Candlebuilders Shopify app will also enable merchants to pay Candlebuilders for orders directly via credit card and integrate with Candlebuilder’s fulfillment software for order management and shipping information. The Candlebuilders Shopify app was built with Ruby on Rails and integrates with Stripe for payments, numerous Shopify services, and Candlebuilders' order management system, OrderDesk.

### Rebuilding a Mobile App for First Responders
First Line Technology designs and manufactures disaster preparedness and response equipment for the military, the government, and first responders. One of its main product lines is Dahlgren Decon™ a three-component decontamination solution that can quickly decontaminate most chemical warfare agents, toxic materials, and other emerging threats. As part of their service offering First Line Technology also offers access to their Decon Field Guide web and mobile app so that first responders can look up the proper decontamination methods for hundreds of known and emerging threats. In order to drive higher engagement with their customer base, First line technology wanted to update the user interface and add new functionality to their React Native mobile app. The number of Decon Field Guide app users has nearly doubled since the relaunch of the new and improved mobile app.
Mobile App Redesign: First Line Technology and The Gnar Company kicked off the work with a Design and Discovery project to define the new user journeys and app features. The discovery workshop was followed by designing app wireframes and final design comps leveraging First line Technology’s brand guidelines, which facilitated a detailed estimate for the development effort.
New Mobile App UI and Functionality: In addition, to the new user interface, The Gnar Company also added improved threat index search functionality, pictorial decontamination instructions, and an in-app dwell timer. In addition, new resources were added to the app to support users including videos, manuals, terms glossary, and FAQs.
Wordpress Development: The Decon Field Guide is also available to customers as a Wordpress web application. The user management and content management for both the web and mobile applications are managed via a Wordpress backend. The Gnar Company built new Wordpress post types for the videos, manuals, terms glossary, and FAQs so that First Line could continually update this content.

### Building Scalability into Order Ahead Feature
LevelUp helps merchants own the shift to mobile by powering mobile-payment optimized loyalty programs, enabling their customers to order and pay for their purchase and accrue/redeem rewards with a single scan or tap. LevelUp (now owned by GrubHub) is currently active in over 14,000 merchant locations and used by 4 million users.  Previous to this project, LevelUp was running manual scripts to receive restaurant menu and merchant information from their providers. LevelUp was building a new back-end system to integrate with online ordering providers, but needed to stand up a Ruby on Rails app to handle the automation and scheduling of these jobs.  Gnar was hired to build Ruby on Rails back-end integrations with LevelUp online ordering partners. The integrations involved importing restaurant menu data and enabling placement of food orders via LevelUp’s Order Ahead feature.

### Expanding Salsify’s Market
Salsify
Salsify, a product content management platform, helps brands such as Mars, L'Oreal, Coca-Cola, Bosch, and GSK offer updated SKU-level information to retailer eCommerce sites via a single platform. This allows brands to sell their products to more customers via more channels more easily. The company’s typical clients include large brands that provide SKU information to mega retailers such as Target, Amazon, and Wal-Mart.

The Challenge
Salsify’s core clients realized that a sizable number of their customers were purchasing goods on smaller retailers’ sites rather than from mega retailers. Salsify’s clients thus needed the ability to integrate with not just Target, Amazon, and Wal-Mart, but also with smaller retailers powered by Shopify and Big Commerce. That meant Salsify needed to build integrations and apps to support these platforms.

The Results
As a result of working with Gnar, Salsify quickly developed integrations and apps that expanded its market. With certain sectors attributing 40% of ecommerce sales growth to direct-to-consumer channels rather than selling through major retailers, enabling retailers to sell via such platforms was a major win for Salsify.
In addition, after launching its integration with Shopify, Salsify was announced as a launch partner to the Shopify Plus Certified App Program. This program ensures that customers have easy access to the apps – like Salisfy's – they need to build and scale their direct-to-consumer businesses. The app we created with Salsify not only allows Shopify Plus customers to syndicate product content at scale, it also enables them to use Salsify Insights to learn more about the products and experiences that are truly resonating with their customers.
By working with Gnar, Salsify could develop this game-changing app quickly and efficiently. Our pre-project planning allowed us to hit the ground running and begin delivering code within days.

### Supporting Fitbit's Clients with Improved Code
Fitbit
Fitbit designs products that promote health and wellness and help users achieve their fitness goals, as well offers health and wellness solutions to help increase engagement, improve health outcomes, and drive a positive return for employers, health plans and health system. One of the original wearable fitness device creators, Fitbit has acquired many companies as part of its business strategy. When such an acquisition occurs, it's critical for Fitbit to continue business as usual.

The Challenge
Fitbit had acquired a health coaching platform company, which enhanced clinical services through the use of its software, empowering people to seek better health outcomes and lower healthcare costs. It needed to build the next-generation of that company’s software and integrate it into the broader Fitbit platform. While building the new software, the team needed to ensure that existing, legacy clients did not experience disruption of service – but Fitbit's internal team didn't have the bandwidth for this task. Fitbit needed to engage with a partner that could improve the performance of the Fitbit Plus platform via software development and database improvements.

The Results
By working with Gnar, Fitbit was able to successfully transition hundreds of thousands of existing Fitbit Plus clients to the new platform while continuing to meet and maintain all client commitments and service-level agreements.
