We’ve been working with Gentlecode since 2023 on an ongoing, as-needed basis, primarily for graphic design support across a wide range of projects. The scope of work has included social media assets, branding elements, flyers, infographics, labels, brochures, and report layouts.

Key deliverables have included finalized print and digital files, wireframes, social media graphics, infographics, and occasional prototypes. Their work has supported both internal teams and public-facing audiences, depending on the project.

Aurora Payments provides secure, tailored payment processing solutions and support for SMBs, consolidating customer tools into a single platform and serving over 27,000 merchants across various industries in the U.S.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Gentle Code?

Initially, we hired Gentle Code to build a new CRM, or perhaps more accurately, a merchant management system to replace three disparate systems at Aurora.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Over time, we added significant scope, including an omni-channel payment gateway, integration of other payment products, and a B2C SaaS application. The deliverables were extensive, but some highlights included automated merchant underwriting, KYC, KYB, compliance, risk management, ACH monitoring, automated boarding and on-boarding APIs, and one of the most complex commission payments systems that I've ever encountered.

What is the team composition?

We had a maximum of 30 teammates from Gentle Code at one time.

How did you come to work with Gentle Code?

We found Gentle Code through a referral from a colleague. We appreciated their approach to incorporating the product into the software development lifecycle and were users of a product that they had scaled.

How much have you invested with them?

Confidential, but well into 7 figures. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working with Gentle Code in July 2019, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We fully replaced three legacy CRMs with one new custom in-house platform, launched and operated a fully functional payment platform, and scaled our SaaS application beyond its limits when we acquired it. For the SaaS application, users grew 700% over three years, which had a strong impact on our gross margin and market share.

How did Gentle Code perform from a project management standpoint?

We worked collaboratively with Gentle Code, integrating their team into our existing product management organization. We collectively delivered in a way that met expectations. They were always very responsive to changes and became very proactive in engaging with our business, trying to anticipate scope changes and build for extensibility rather than just taking orders.

We communicated via Slack, Zoom, and Teams meetings.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We were impressed with the access and proactive involvement of upper management. We never felt like we were just another customer; they were an extension of our team.

Are there any areas they could improve?

While Gentle Code delivered impressively on internal applications that run our extremely complex business, we would have loved to see them focus earlier on revenue creation. This would help them to help other clients build extremely valuable market-facing products.
