What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Having worked with GenCare at two companies now, I feel that what is most impressive are the people who work there. In part it may be the ethos of the company with the buy-in by each member as a partial owner of GenCare, but even beyond that everyone seems quite dedicated to the work they're doing. No one with whom I've collaborated falls under the stereotypical "IT Guy" mold of intelligent condescention.
They are all obviously intelligent and well suited to their field of work, but they also understand customer service and how to collaborate well with the people who are hiring them. They can get as technical as you need, but also speak openly to a lay person who may have limited knowledge beyond the basics of how to work a computer or phone.
They also seem to have a strong team-focused atmosphere. One member of the crew may be great at handling a certain task, and another may have more knowledge in another area so they both collaborate to fill the holes and provide the customer with full service.

I don't have any areas for improvement to offer. My dealings with GenCare have been quite positive.

We needed to improve our security system because we work with sensitive information. Our partner needed to secure our system to ensure that no one else could access the information, with safe firewalls to prevent information leaks.

We initially had a phone call and an in-person meeting with Jeff to explain our situation. GenCare assessed our needs and provided options. We chose the necessary steps to secure our systems.

We already had Microsoft 365 set up, and we needed to move those folders to a better location so we could limit access to information. GenCare sent someone to analyze my computer and the system I was working on. They added additional Microsoft features to secure the system, as well as cybersecurity software and a backup plan.

This has been a one-time service that we're going to have every year. During this year's service, I was in contact with a software engineer, going back and forth to figure out the issues.

We chose a fixed budget. The timeline was interrupted for a while because I left the country for a month, but GenCare has been good in terms of timing. We have used Microsoft Teams to communicate with Oscar. I have been more in contact with Jeff through phone calls.

We needed managed IT and cybersecurity services.

What was the scope of their involvement?

GenCare provides managed IT and cybersecurity services. The team ensures all our systems are up to date and routinely checks our systems. GenCare has installed SentinelOne on our system, and the team consistently monitors our system for security. GenCare also provides 24-hour services and can remotely access our system at any time.

GenCare provides on-site and remote services. The team comes to our property if we need hands-on work, and GenCare can spend a day or two on-site. If we need remote services, the team can remotely access our system while we’re on the phone with them.

We’ve decommissioned our server and moved everything to a mobile platform. GenCare is very hands-on with our projects. I work with a direct representative from GenCare, and we meet quarterly to discuss our current network and the units on it. We also go through our list to ensure all the licensing I have is current and needed.

We've just started a $7 million turf care project, and they just assisted me with moving the Internet and moving our turf department out of the building we tore down and into trailers. That was our latest project: making sure that the department was moved over and operational.

I’ve worked with GenCare before at a previous club. When I got to my current club, and GenCare was already working here, I was very excited to work with them again. The team is well known in our industry, and since a lot of clubs belong to a controller group, we are consistently sharing providers throughout the world of motuh. GenCare stands out for their consistency and availability, which is key to why a lot of clubs hire them.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

GenCare’s work has resulted in minimal downtime. The team usually has us up and running within 15–20 minutes. GenCare is very good at working directly with our accounting software provider. If there’s an issue they can’t immediately fix, they’ll get on the phone and spend time with our other providers, which frees up my staff to continue doing their job while GenCare works on the issue.

Our speed has increased because we switched to fiber. GenCare has managed all our transitions, making them very seamless and easy. The team’s work has benefited my staff. GenCare has met my expectations.

How did GenCare perform from a project management standpoint?

GenCare works with my budget. We initially discussed the budget, and the team is looking for ways to cut my costs. GenCare always looks outside the box to ensure there isn’t a faster, easier, or better way to do things. I always feel the club’s best interests are protected when I work with them.

We can call GenCare or email their help desk. We have quarterly meetings via Microsoft Teams where the team shows me the network list, the items on it, and ensures that all our PCs are up and running, and that we're not paying for additional licensing we don't need. They ensure everything is properly running. We trust that whichever tools they need on their end will always be efficient and safe for our systems.

Once, the POS system went down while I was at dinner, and I was able to call them and have the system back up within 20 minutes, so their continued care and availability are key to keeping us operational. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

GenCare’s consistency is impressive. I always expect the same level of service and am guaranteed to get the same level of service with whoever I work with. GenCare’s availability is also huge for me. If I need them to come to our property, they ensure they come in a timely manner. 

Moreover, I have a favorite technician whom I always request. He's very personable with my staff, as well as helpful and patient. This person always gets the job done, so I never have to worry that he's working on our systems.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I’m very happy with their services.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Communicate with them. GenCare never makes you feel that your level of competency in the IT world is less if you don’t know or understand something. The team walks you through and guides you, which is an added level of service. Someone who isn’t well-versed in the IT industry can communicate with them just as if they were the IT director. GenCare has the ability to look at a broader scope and understand our team’s needs.

What was the scope of their involvement?

GenCare provides managed IT and cybersecurity services for us. Initially, I provided an invoice from the previous company, and the team talked to the other company to take care of the behind-the-scenes work. Since then, GenCare has installed hardware and software and put in place items that were missing from the previous provider for security reasons. The team has also updated everyone’s computers to make us more secure.

GenCare primarily provides off-site services, but the team has said they can come into the office if needed. The team has also offered to help us switch phone companies and purchase computers. If we find a lower price for a computer, we can buy it ourselves, ship it to GenCare, and the team will set it up for us.

When I came on board, our IT department was very flat. We had two people servicing our organization, and I needed a partner to help us grow.

What was the scope of their involvement?

GenCare provides managed IT services for us. Initially, I built a topology map of our environment, and they came in with an understanding of what equipment we had, and their onboarding has been straightforward. We had a mix of switches, firewalls, and computers locally connected to the Active Directory. GenCare has seen our user accounts and licensing and understands our environment.

GenCare has recommended and installed hardware and software. We had some Cisco gear and a lot of Netgear equipment that wasn’t commercial grade. GenCare is a Cisco-certified partner, and they’ve recommended we look at the concept of Meraki devices. The team has helped us swap out firewalls and switches and replace all our access points throughout our facilities based on a saturation map they provided.

GenCare has also provided network overhauls, Azure rollouts, server migrations, cybersecurity reviews, intrusion detection, and patch management. We have a primarily off-site relationship, but they’ve sent technicians on-site when needed. GenCare also provides ongoing maintenance and hosting services.

GenCare has also recommended phishing training services through one of their partners.

Do due diligence on your project to make sure you understand the full scope before you ask them to scope it out. There may be things GenCare brings to light that you don’t think of or that require more investment. You need to understand what the project will affect, how long it will take, and what the potential cost will be. If you want to have a project with GenCare, but assign another person to figure it out, your engagement might fail.

GenCare provides IT managed services. Initially, we needed to give them access to our systems. They set us up with various Microsoft licenses and other things for our shared drives. The team mostly works remotely, but a technician has come to our facility once or twice.

We’ve also explored another company to help us build our website. We needed to include GenCare in a lot of those calls to help. They were on all the calls and provided good feedback. They were just there to monitor and ensure all our systems were still protected.

We work with 3–4 teammates from GenCare, including Jeff, a customer service agent, one or two technicians, and someone from their accounting team.

GenCare came to me by referral. I called a number of associates and people I knew. I came up with several names of IT companies, and GenCare was one of them. There was some confusion regarding the implementation of how many users are on our system. We’d added some new licenses and removed a number of other licenses. We were being billed for licenses we didn’t need. Jeff was gracious about working with us to resolve the issue. Still, there was a communication issue, and we could’ve corrected that earlier in the process.

As everything is being set up and licenses are being issued, take an extra minute to verify that you’re being billed properly.

How did GenCare perform from a project management standpoint?

GenCare is excellent at project management. The team organizes everything very well and clearly. We typically meet on Microsoft Teams.

What did you find most impressive about them?

GenCare's level of organization is impressive  — second to none. Their skill set probably matches that of any other managed service provider company.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We pay a substantial amount of money every month, and it's a use-it-or-lose-it platform. I feel like we're not getting much value from it at the moment because we have a bucket of hours we can use or not use. I've tried to come up with a platform where we can pay as we go or save hours for the next month, but they don't seem to be open to that idea.

Be super clear and concise with your needs because that helps GenCare. The more specific you are, the better they can answer your questions.
