We needed to develop a backend for the streaming platform MVP. Frontend development was handled internally, but we needed really experienced and knowledgeable people to cope with the back-end code. The goal was to build a solid and safe backend, for the platform to easily host multiple online events with lots of users. The platform being on the MVP stage, the backend was of the highest importance. Apart from this, the goal was to fit into the tight release schedule.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We looked for a service provider in multiple channels for quite some time, as we had a specific set of requirements that many candidates didn’t fit. With BandaPixels everything was fast and professional. We signed the contract the next day after we started communicating. In one day, we conducted two interviews with the developer and, in the meantime, we discussed contract and cooperation conditions with the team manager. On the next day, both parties signed the contract and we started the onboarding phase.

The main steps of the platform development were set up, development itself, MVP release, post-MVP features. The developer also did some DevOps work at the beginning, but then we hired a different DevOps, not to overload the developer with other tasks. Apart from that, the developer from BandaPixels became a team lead of the backend team after 2 months of work. He managed the process, did code reviews. etc. The deliverable was a fully functioning, scalable backend. The main technologies were Node. js, AWS, Typescript, TypeORM, etc.

One back-end developer, who also worked as a team lead of the back-end team, and a manager, did invoices and solved some cooperation issues. On our side, we had a project manager, front-end team, and, later on, 2 backed developers.

We now have a working MVP that gains its first users worldwide. We are happy with the quality of the code and with the fact that the MVP development fitted into our rigid timeframes.

The general project management was arranged on our side. However, BandaPixels had its own manager assigned to the project responsible for efficient communication, problem-solving, and paperwork. The team is very responsive and quick to solve any issues that arise during the project. As mentioned above, the project was completed on time.

How involved and indifferent the team is. Over time, when needed to ensure timely release, release support (once a developer had to work the whole weekend during the release), immediate fixes, and answers (even in non-working hours). BandaPixels often exceeded our expectations.

Nothing like that occurs to me now. We would probably wish BandaPixels to grow in size and to have more specialists whose services we can buy in the future.

We typically did a couple of Skype calls every week. Furthermore I was able to give comments in Figma that were picked up directly by the UI designer. For small changes, the UI designer was very responsive, so we could present them directly to our customer.

There never has been a long waiting time. Within a few days, they were always to start on the next job or task. The UI design always has been looking very modern and beautiful.

Bandapixels, LLC developed a  web application prototype to test the functionality and high-level usability of our ideas. They developed potential features, such as upload and download options. 

The website was set up as a portal for teachers to upload and download documents. They added an upload option and a bunch of UI setups that have been integrated into MongoDB for the backend. We’ve also used Google Cloud for cloud support. It was mainly frontend development and setting up the pipeline for integration within the front- and backend work. We primarily used React as the main language, and HTML and CSS for the UI.

We now have the best platform for testing. This project was done from scratch, and there were no metrics to begin with. We built it with the goal of testing it, to see if it was even feasible. My company is currently doing functionality testing to know whether the product will be useful to our target audience.

We initially communicated on Upwork, and then we had conversations on Slack. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Bandapixels, LLC showed a lot of professionalism. They involved a couple of senior staff members in planning and scheduling. We don’t have many metrics on the work itself, but the conversations with their senior staff helped. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

They’re definitely on the high end in terms of technology and budgeting — they’re shooting for a lot. For the most part, they seemed to be doing overestimations, which is one of the reasons I had to stop our contract and find a different provider. That is something they could work on.

Any advice for potential customers?

Before going to them, try to have everything written down. You cannot change your specs in the middle of the process. Be sure to have a good understanding of what they’re doing. Also, read the contract; once you start, you can’t change it.
