Please describe your company and your position there.

The MASMOVIL Group is the fourth largest telecommunications operator in Spain included in the IBEX 35, the most important index of the Spanish Stock Exchange and which offer fixed line, mobile, and internet services to residential customers, businesses and operators, through its main brands: Yoigo, MASMOVIL, Pepephone, Llamaya, Lebara, Lycamobile and Hits mmobile.

The Group has its own mobile network infrastructures for fixed fibre, ADSL, 3G and 4G. MASMOVIL Group’s fixed network reaches 18 million households with ADSL and close to 25 million with optical fibre. Its 4G mobile network covers 98,5% of the Spanish population. The Group has also reached agreements with other telecommunications operators in Spain, therefore completing its coverage of fixed and mobile networks, becoming one of the operators with the best network coverages in Spain. The Group has more than 11,3 million customers.

I’m Director Software Engineer and Chief Architect of Grupo MasMovil. We decide what and how we build technical solutions for the company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Etéreo, and what were your goals?

Build and maintain a monorepo for all main frontend projects in the company to improve internal team mobility across projects and also technical convergence (operational, stack, conventions).

How did you select Etéreo and what were the deciding factors?

Based on Etereo excellent previous experience working to Masmovil group, their skills as a high performance team and delivery quality.

Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.

Technical management of the main frontend applications of MásMóvil Group. Definition and communication of a unified technical vision. Give visibility of ongoing initiatives as common needs. Facilitate communication of knowledge among different teams and areas. Technical training for development teams.

Development of proofs of concepts and technical solutions for common problems. Active contribution to the group’s most critical projects and teams. Establishment of the foundations of agile culture, high-performance teams, and quality development. Frontend monorepo bootstrapping with react, lerna, bazel, material-ui, typescript, nextjs, redux, rxjs. In first meetings we decided wich goals we wanted to achieve from technical leadership point of view.

Then Etereo gathered other needs from other stakeholders, such as business, UX/UI and DevTeam. With all the info Etereo proposed a technical strategy to follow in order to achieve most of the stakeholders’ goals. Project updates were made weekly

Lead Frontend Developer as a Frontend Chapter Lead and some seniors developers distributed in key projects

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

The first development of an e-care project for one of our brands, based on multibrand architechture, was finished in 3 months. The following e-care developments for other brands took only 2 weeks. We achieved 45+% increment of conversion rate for new e-commerce sites developed within the new architecture.

Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timelines.

We had weekly meetings at the technical leadership level. From the chapter point of view, there was also a weekly chapter meeting with all company frontend developers. There was a governance process where only top or high-level decisions were elevated to technical leadership, otherwise, it usually got resolved within the chapter. We used Jira for Chapter level task visibility, Slack for direct communication, and GitHub for technical collaboration.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Their seniority level and delivery quality. They provided stability to a wide range of projects and teams. Very proactive and ountstanding communication level.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

They could have used bazel as a build tool in the monorepo, but there were some blockers to achieve that, like some experimental libraries.

Pepephone is a MVNO part of Masmovil Group, and is the telco brand with the most satisfied customers in Spain. I was working as Digital & Marketing Director by the time we worked with Etéreo.

We had an old website really poor in terms of architecture and UX / UI. Etéreo helped us to define best architecture and redesign UX / UI

We have a digital hub in Masmovil group that asses and selects the best partners to work with. After analyzing a shortlist of 3 providers we selected Etéreo because of their knowledge and human values

We had several meetings to define the strategy:

1. Build a QW version of website in php in order to test with a MVP UX and UI
2. Advance in React architecture
3. Agile methodology with weekly streams involving all parts involved
4. Quality measurement
