I’m the health, safety, and environment (HSE) and QA manager of a Malaysian construction company. We’re developing commercial buildings and a shopping center.

What challenge were you trying to address with JANETO?

We gather a lot of data onsite, and we compound it to generate digital reports. We were looking for a way to reduce the amount of paperwork involved in those operations, so we decided to hire a vendor to develop an application to automate the data entry process and eliminate the need for manual work.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We don’t have much technical background, so we met with JANETO  to describe how we wanted the app to look. I’m not sure what technologies the team used, but they built iOS and Android versions of the platform.

The final product allows internal staff to handle all of our processes on their mobile devices. Without physically sitting a computer and typing out the information, the app lets them send the data to their superiors via email.

I had one point of contact from JANETO, but I’m not sure how many resources were assigned to our account in total.

How did you come to work with JANETO?

I searched for vendors online and reached out to a few. JANETO responded quickly and provided helpful answers to our questions, so we chose to work with them.

We spent around $4,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The bulk of the project was from October 2018–January 2019, but they’re still helping us with debugging work.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We don’t have a concrete baseline in place to measure the impact of JANETO’s work, but I’m completely satisfied with their performance. The team is very reliable and efficient. They solved every problem we encountered within a week.

How did JANETO perform from a project management standpoint?

We set expectations for the project, and JANETO met all of our requirements and delivered on time. We communicated solely through emails and phone calls—no project management tools. They were always receptive to our feedback.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They made a great first impression. JANETO was much more responsive and enthusiastic than the other service providers we reached out to. It wasn’t a huge project for them, but they still treated us like a high-level customer.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything at the moment.

Any advice for potential customers?

Clients should establish a way to measure JANETO’s performance and provide feedback, but give them the freedom to work on their own.

What challenge were you trying to address with JANETO?

We needed an app developer. We made a prototype quite cheaply. We needed to get it done properly.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We came up with the framework for how we hoped for it to function. They helped us work through that because we had never done this before. They came up with ideas to help our app work and helped us troubleshoot issues as well. Together we came up with what the user experience would be. They also helped us realize that certain areas wouldn’t work the way we’d hoped within the boundaries of an app. The app was developed for Android. We hope to make this same app for iOS once we have more money.

The app has emoticons. We wanted it made so you can send the emoticons through text message or you could post text to a photo. The app also features patent backgrounds for HD wallpaper. A patent background gets updated every 24 hours. They helped us set up a timer for that as well.

We needed an idea to get users to keep coming back to the app. They helped us come up with the idea that a new emoticon would be born every three days. They set up a timer. We put everything on a cloud so the images were accessible for anyone who was downloading them. We’re up to the third round of our app. We’re always updating it to keep it fresh and exciting.

We launched our latest build earlier this year. We continue to work with them with development work. We also built an iOS app with them, but it was just a stickers app.

What is the team composition?

We only had contact with their COO. If he could answer the question, he would. Otherwise, he’d go to his team and get back to us as soon as he could. We didn’t have contact with the other developers.

How did you come to work with JANETO?

It wasn’t possible cost-wise to hire someone in Australia. My business partner found them through Tech in Asia. We went to Ho Chi Minh City and interviewed quite a few different developers. JANETO had a broad range of experience. We liked their skill base, price, and turnaround time. They’re very good at negotiating cost. They had great ideas. We felt we’d get more help from JANETO because they could provide more than just the coding side.

How much have you invested with them?

It cost $50,000 AUD ($37,793 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in October 2017 and the work is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Friends and people using the app say they like it and that it’s functional. We haven’t had many crashes. Our main audience is Indonesia, and because we have so many little emoticons and functionality of the background, the initial download file size of the app is too big for them. We’re working now with JANETO to sort it out. It’s not their fault. It’s something we didn’t realize would be an issue.

How did JANETO perform from a project management standpoint?

They were determined to get the job done. They didn’t rush it, but they weren’t slow. We gave them changes and they came back to us promptly with the latest file. If there were any issues, they let us know they’re working through them. We use WhatsApp and email.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They brought our idea to reality. They were quite cost-effective compared to what others quoted. They were easy to work with. Given the language barrier, they were great communicators. If I didn’t understand what they communicated, they showed screen grabs or walked me through what they were trying to communicate. They’ve been perfect for us.

They seem to be learning as they go as well. If there’s something they don’t know, they find the answer, which is great.

What challenge were you trying to address with Janeto ?

We wanted to create a website with a cash shop. We wanted to connect the cash shop with different games and to an account system provided by an external company. We needed someone to program a cash shop from scratch.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We needed to use systems that weren’t originally connected to each other. The difficulty was to find a way to call the different APIs from the different surfaces, connect them, and make them work. Our account system wasn’t designed to be used in computer games. We have gone live with the project but there are some open tasks and new features we want to do.

I had contact with two people; Thanh [CEO, Janeto] and one of their web designers.

We chose them because we’d done a project with them before. They did a good job and we wanted to continue to work with them.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

It’s a success—the site is properly functional. A lot of the development tasks aren’t viewable to the users. There are lots of background features that only we admins can view and know what work stands behind the project.

How did Janeto perform from a project management standpoint?

Most of my direct contact was with their CEO over Skype, email, and calls. He communicated all our needs and tasks to his development team. He was very available. I could ask him questions at any time and he replied quickly. We shared files with due dates, estimates, and schedules.

Since the project was very difficult, we couldn’t meet all the deadlines. There was a lot of critical issues that appeared during this development. There was a lot of difficulty due to the time difference between Germany and Vietnam. Despite that, most of the time it was easy to communicate with them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They were very patient with all the stuff we came up with. It wasn’t an easy task, but they always remained calm and was very professional. I was impressed because there were some really difficult moments.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There could be a little stricter with their scheduling. For example, we could share a calendar to decrease the number of misunderstandings with regard to holidays, special occasions, or when someone is on a business trip.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

We had the best results when working with clear task lists on Google Drive and Google Docs. You can also use project management tools like Jira or Confluence. I’d recommend starting with going through this list of tasks every week. We had weekly calls on a fixed day to go over the complete list and prioritize tasks. When you’re always focused on the important tasks, it’s much easier to get the critical tasks done first.

The project was very successful and deadlines were met as initially agreed. The process was somewhat organic and JANETO was very flexible in how they interacted with me as a client.

Project management was very efficient and swift—they provided a continuous flow of information throughout the project. They addressed all my concerns so I was never unsure of what was going on behind the scenes.

They deliver great value for their price. They also provide quick and good communication.

What tips or recommendations do you have?

Make sure that you have a clear idea of how you want the software to look before you start the project. I went back and forth in the layout design process which caused some delays. In hindsight, I should have had a final design draft before sending it to the developers.
