What challenge were you trying to address with Designli?

I wanted to build an app and a software development platform for a new launch.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Designli has designed and developed a dual mobile and desktop software app and platform for me. The initial phase was a discovery lab where they built a prototype of my product. If I liked what came out of the exploration lab, they would build the actual product. I had some design concepts in my head of what I was looking for, and provided them with some descriptions and an outline of the project. The lab brought my ideas to life, and from there, I pursued having them build the full product.

The platform is a video-first-based software platform for hiring, so they had to integrate features similar to a dating app, where a company looks through videos. Users can build talent profiles and walk through the whole journey of the interview process. Designli has also built an internal platform for companies that want to grow their internal employees. This platform provides stretch and development opportunities to employees that companies want to retain and grow within their organization.

Designli will launch the platform at the end of June 2024, and I’ve signed on with a post-launch maintenance plan. I’ll probably come back to them to do ongoing enhancements or features down the road.

I’ve worked with a full production team, including Fatima, our project manager, as well as Jorge, Walter, and Sebastian. I’ve also worked with Tyler, who was the first person I talked to when I started the project.

How did you come to work with Designli?

I did a lot of research with many different software companies. I found them through a Yahoo and Google search and by looking at many reviews on Clutch. I did a lot of interviews with different organizations, and one thing I really appreciated about Designli was that they were very thorough in the interview process. They wanted to discover why I was reaching out to them and what I was looking for.

Other software companies just said yes to everything I wanted. I appreciated that Designli told me what they actually recommended to succeed. They only take on clients they truly believe will be successful. I appreciated that they weren’t just saying yes to everything and that they provided me with the expertise and feedback I needed to build my product.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I’ve been a tester along the way with the platform, and I’ve been happy with the outcome of the development. I’m enjoying using it, and I’ll wait to get the analytics when we launch. Overall, Designli has met my expectations.

How did Designli perform from a project management standpoint?

Fatima has been fantastic at managing the project. We have regular meetings; every week, we have two meetings at the start and end of the week to go through what they’ll work on. If something is behind schedule, they tell me what they’re doing to make it up. They’re really good at communicating the progress.

We use a Basecamp dashboard to share messages and updates. They’ve also shared a Figma file with me to follow along with the development progress. Aside from the meetings, we use video calls and Basecamp messaging, which is our primary communication method.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Designli is excellent at communication. They always ensure I’m good with things, and if something needs to be elevated immediately, leadership gets involved. They’re always checking in. I’ve been impressed with how Fatima runs the project. She’s super responsive, and whenever I send something, I get immediate follow-ups and responses.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I’ve been really happy with the results and the experience. I’d definitely recommend them.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be involved and engaged. I always show up with lots of questions, ideas, and things to try out. Be active and engaged in the process. Designli is really responsive to hearing and knowing your ideas and ensuring they capture your vision.

We needed help expanding our current platform and offerings.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Designli has provided us with custom software and AI development services. We’ve started the process by providing them with complete documentation of our code and all related project materials. The team has deep-dived into everything we have going on and has taken over the project. Designli has reviewed our project and signed a development contract to demonstrate what they can do from a capabilities standpoint. 

Designli has developed a platform that integrates over 300 different tracking companies and hardware, getting all the information into one spot. The team has also connected the platform with our proprietary internal geofencing solution and system. Additionally, the platform automates communication based on transportation activities.

Regarding the technology stack, we use .NET and Python. We also use React Native for mobile app development. Designli manages our AWS hosting. We had a four-month process from initial introduction until go-live.

What is the team composition?

We work with a project manager, a lead developer, two other developers, and a QA specialist. We’ve also interacted with 15 people in total due to environmental and structural changes, or things that are specialized outside the realm of typical development, where other resources have come in.

How did you come to work with Designli?

I met Designli at a sales conference. I noticed them and what they were offering. At the moment, I was lukewarm about my current agreement, so I decided to start a conversation with Designli. We came back to that conversation three months later.

We chose Designli because they showed us what they could do. The team took on our current project and did a free version of it. We also signed a short-term contract to see how they operated. We were comfortable with the process they went through to hire developers and staff. Additionally, Designli is close to our location, which is a plus.
When interviewing a dozen software companies, it all comes down to comfort level, and we were comfortable with the process they went through to hire developers and staff. Moreover, Designli is close by; they're based in South Carolina, which is not that far from us, and that was also a plus.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Our platform has seen about a 30% increase in feature enhancements. Designli has also redeveloped and redesigned our entire backend infrastructure, enabling us to reach the scale we’re looking for.

How did Designli perform from a project management standpoint?

We have a monthly agreement for as much work as Designli can get done. The team has done a good job of continuing to refine their process for estimating and their understanding of our core structures. Since they didn’t build the platform, there are always things that they’re unaware of. However, Designli is very good at improving their estimates and actual output.

We use Jira and GitHub for project management. We communicate through virtual meetings and Basecamp messages.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’m impressed by Designli’s willingness to take on our project. Our software had some bugs and holes that needed to be fixed. Designli has rolled up their sleeves and dug into the project. I’ve always been impressed that no matter what we give them, they accept the challenge. Not everybody is that lucky, and that’s been extremely helpful.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There have been times when Designli could have improved communication and our understanding of what we’re trying to get done. The team is trying to fully understand what we do and who our customers are. That would help them better understand the output we’re looking for.

Sometimes, things haven’t been completed as we expected, and phases haven’t been created in the appropriate way. However, those things are getting better.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Give Designli a clean and clear direction. Provide a clear description of who you’re targeting, what you’re going after, and what your end results are. The clearer the picture you give them, the more helpful they’ll be.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Designli has been helping us develop and market our app. Initially, I provided them with the code from the previous development team. We've had multiple sit-downs with their team to discuss the project and answer their questions so they could get the full scope of what we wanted to do. We’ve had around 10–12 meetings in the first month.

Currently, Designli is working on the back office of our app. We’ve almost completed the app, and we’re making some tweaks. The app will run off the back office, which we’ll be able to sell to driving schools. It’s an administrative office space where we can handle scheduling and track paperwork for students. It’s a fully digital space for driver education.

The first person we spoke to was a salesperson at Designli. Since then, we’ve worked with around 12 teammates, including a project lead and a software lead.

How did you come to work with Designli?

I found Designli through ChatGPT. I typed in that I wanted a US-based company that could build apps and had experience doing it. I gave it 5–6 different criteria, and it popped up with Designli and four other companies. I went to each company’s website and did some due diligence. Designli was at the top of the list, so they were the first call I made.

Designli had good reviews, and people talked about their experiences, which was huge. When I had a couple of phone calls with Designli, I was impressed with their willingness to spend three weeks getting to know my app and presenting what they would like to do moving forward. They did that for free, which gave me the ability to test them. That made me feel safe, and when I saw what they had done, I decided to move forward with them.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Designli has done more in 2.5 months than the previous team had done in a year. The app is working, and we’re using it in our driving school. It’s doing what it’s supposed to do. We’ve had some hurdles after the launch, but Designli has been quick to respond to those issues.

Designli has been brilliant. The team has kept us from making some mistakes because there were times when we needed to understand the process better, and they've seen things that we haven't experienced. When Designli explains those things, they give us a little more wisdom in making decisions.

They understand the technology space and the app space, and they do the best they can to ensure that they're putting you in a position of success with your app. They're not just about building it and saying thank you for using us. Designli is about developing long-term relationships. The team understands that sometimes what's best for the customer is a little pushback. Overall, Designli has met our expectations.

How did Designli perform from a project management standpoint?

Designli’s project management has been phenomenal. We’ve had a hiccup when our main programmer left the company, which created a bit of a slowdown. Other than that, I’m very impressed with Designli, not just because of the work they do but because of the care they take to ensure they’re doing what the client expects.

Designli has different teammates who follow up with us and ask if there’s anything they can do to meet our needs. They do that on a monthly basis. When the slowdown occurred, they made some accommodations. Overall, it’s been a great experience.

We use Basecamp to communicate with Designli. It’s a good communication tool, and we can reach out to anyone on the team. They respond quickly. Designli has also used Jira, Asana, Trello, and GitHub.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We're impressed with Designli’s thoughtfulness and concern for ensuring they don’t just do what the client asks. They want to understand how the client will engage in their industry. Designli ensures the client understands and that they’re on the same page moving forward, so the launch can be impactful.

Designli’s client care is impressive. Under that umbrella of care, they have productivity and ensure the client’s expectations are met. They also ensure the client is pleased. Once the fundamental foundations are laid, they want to start doing AI and other things. I can see this is a long-term relationship.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there aren’t any. We’ve been pleased with what they’ve done.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be fully engaged in every meeting, come prepared to every meeting knowing what you want, and don’t be so dogmatic about what you want that you can’t hear some of their suggestions. Designli knows the field, and some of their suggestions can save you money in the long run and make your project more palatable to the public once it’s launched.

We needed help designing and delivering the MVP of our patent-pending LMS website.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We’ve had multiple meetings to discuss our vision and the implications of what this platform will do. We’ve explained to Designli that the platform needs to be built in a modular way so that we can add to it as it gets built out through several phases. We’re currently in the first phase, and we’re internally testing the platform.

We work with a six-person development team. We also work with Tyler, who has been working with me from the start to build the quotes and put everything together for the scope of work. We also meet with some of his management staff. Additionally, we meet with a customer service representative monthly to track how things are going and report back to the team.

I found Designli through AI. I use Copilot quite regularly through my Microsoft 365. When I started figuring it was time to look for a development team, I asked the Copilot who could handle this, and Designli was the top recommendation.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’ve been working on the platform this week, and the feedback has been very positive. Designli has quickly rectified the bugs we’ve identified, and the platform is working as we want it to. The few bugs that need solving will result in a finished product that meets our expectations. Designli has exceeded my expectations.

How did Designli perform from a project management standpoint?

We had an overage of time and money, but I can’t blame Designli for that because neither they nor I had ever done this before, and we didn't understand the scope of what we wanted to build. The team has been more than willing to absorb the majority of the costs by adding team members. After they delivered the MVP, instead of charging me for the maintenance fee, they offered it for free for a couple of months. We’re probably 2–3 weeks into that, and they’ve come through with that. They’re meeting us daily and fixing all the bugs we find while delivering a quality product.

We use Basecamp for communication. We also have Zoom meetings, emails, and occasional phone calls.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Designli’s ability to adapt is impressive. They’ve been able to take what’s in my head and get it to them so they can understand it. It’s been a massive undertaking, and they’ve handled it really well. Designli has asked the right questions to get to where someone who had no clue what my business model looked like could understand it. Then, they began to grasp the scope and importance of the build.

Moreover, it doesn’t seem like it’s just a job to get a dollar. Designli appreciates what we’re trying to build and the importance of it; that in itself is impressive.

I can’t think of anything for Designli to improve.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Plan on an overage if you have a big scope. That way, you can run your budget better. Probably, general website design and similar projects could be easier, but if you have a big project, you should consider it ahead. I had a little contingency in mind, and I used every bit of it.

For phase 1, the MVP includes worker wallets to handle all training certificates a worker has and an LMS to deliver the classes needed to build the wallet for training the worker needs. It has been built from the worker up. Phase 1 has worker wallets and general contractors as users who can connect on the platform.

Designli has delivered the MVP and is ready to push into phase 2. We're testing in-house now and will launch our pilot on June 1, 2026. So far, we've identified a handful of bugs that the team is fixing. Overall, the MVP is performing very well.

Moreover, the worker wallets' ability to build from the worker or the GCs is successful. The ability to mass load workers with Excel sheets provided from a GC is also working well.

How did Designli perform from a project management standpoint?

The scope wasn't apparent at the beginning, and I don't blame the dev team for not completely understanding the vision. It's big! So, we went over by a third in time and cost to deliver the MVP. It's my fault as much as theirs.

However, the dev team has helped us absorb the overage by adding more team members at no cost. They've also provided support after the MVP delivery that usually costs about $6,000 per month. Designli has been wonderful to work with, moving toward a big vision.

The team has also helped me figure out what I want the wireframes to look like. Designli has conducted a two-week sprint where we brainstormed and talked through the idea to develop a clickable prototype. The team has also helped me identify user personas and tailor the app to potential users. 

Designli has used Figma to create the UX/UI design and wireframes. At the end of the latest sprint, I knew I needed to pause before I committed to developing the app to raise funds, and that's where we are now.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I’ve been using the prototype to gauge market interest. I’ve been sending out different ads through social media, and I’m getting a lot of positive feedback on the prototype. 

How did Designli perform from a project management standpoint?

Designli has stayed on track during the solution process. We communicate via Google Meet and Basecamp.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I appreciate that Designli has asked the appropriate questions to help me consider scalability and design a user-friendly app. The team is an expert in their field and has been able to walk me through things I hadn't considered.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything to improve. I have been very pleased with their solution lab process.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Designli will ask lots of questions and point out things you need to consider. Keep a document of those questions and come to each meeting with the answers so you can stay consistent with your goals.
