Basmar designed and implemented an eval-based QA framework for our LLM-powered features. This included building a test harness for batch evaluations, defining quality criteria per feature, and setting up automated regression checks that run whenever we update prompts or swap models. They also helped us document what "acceptable output" actually means for each use case.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We now have automated evals running on every prompt change and model update. We caught two significant quality regressions during the project itself - both would have gone to production undetected under our previous process. The quality criteria documentation we produced together also became the foundation for our internal AI review process.

Bi-weekly syncs, async on Slack. They were organised and clear about what was being built and why. The framework went through a few design iterations - that was expected given the novelty of the problem - and they were patient with the back-and-forth. Nothing slipped without communication.

They understood the non-determinism problem from the start. Most QA people we'd spoken to wanted to treat AI features like normal functional tests. There was a period where we needed more guidance on what quality thresholds were realistic - that's partly on us for not having the data, but it would've helped if they'd pushed us harder on that earlier. We figured it out, but it added some time to the scoping phase.
