Project management was a total disaster. We went through 5 project managers during the project. They didn't listen to the client's feedback. They missed most of the main functionality. When they were told about this it was dismissed and advised that these are 'new features'. They had meetings upon meetings. ArtJoker charged us over $30,000 just on meetings over 6 months. Their project scoping was abysmal.

However, it is important to clarify that the client, likely the source of this review disguised as "Anonymous," has failed to fulfill their financial obligations to our team. They have taken possession of the project without completing payment and show no intention of honoring their contractual commitments. For over a year, we have been met with promises but no actions. We contracted ArtJoker to help us design and develop our new company website. We started off thinking that we would develop 6 pages and later grew our scope to include 12 pages. We were mindful of ensuring that the site would be accessible on multiple platforms and devices. 

They also helped design all our graphical elements and overall UX/UI. We decided to create both a Dark and Light theme. Our budget allowed for only one of these at the time of delivery but we are looking forward to rolling out the Light option in the near future. We also made allowance for the translation of our English site into Maltese and other languages in the near future.

We were given a number of deadlines to adhere to by ArtJoker in terms of when content should be completed by us and made available to them, when graphics should be approved, when UX/UI should be signed off, so that our ultimate project deadline could be met. They were always flexible and adaptable to our time constraints and our needs.

We were very happy with the way that the project was managed. Their proficiency with English was of a very high level and it was easy to explain our requirements. Logistically, everything worked extremely well. On the first steps of development, we had a first assigned project manager, and the overall experience was more or less satisfactory, except for a few minor inconveniences. However, after some time, when the new project manager took over the leadership organically, we experienced significant improvements in all aspects of planning, budgeting, and response time.

They worked in the Agile methodology using the Scrum framework, with two-week-long sprints. Our overall experience was good. In most cases, we received the deliverables on time, except for some rare situations when we experienced a delay of more than a week after the deadlines (which is pretty common in IT/software development).

Communication was prompt, and the management and other team members responded quickly and directly to the point, helping us identify and estimate our needs.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

When we encountered difficult technical or business moments during development, they quickly connected us with other specialists in the company, including top-level management such as the CEO and CTO, to help us as much as possible within a short time and free of charge. Although there were only a few such cases during different project phases, it worked amazingly!

Are there any areas for improvement or something Artjoker Software could have done differently?

During the project's initial phase, there were a few replacements of team members as they didn't fit professionally or mentally with our project. In hindsight, we would have liked to conduct additional interviews with each team member before the start of work.

However, after this case, we implemented this practice, which allowed all parties to select people who are perfectly compatible with our project and approach to work.

I’m the co-founder and CEO of Ungdomsappen, a tech startup company. We’re an innovative software company that has built two solutions: a SaaS solution for the food sector to help restaurants reduce their food waste and a mobile application to target municipalities to reach out to teenagers and children.

What challenge were you trying to address with Artjoker Software?

We needed help with custom software development and mobile app development. We required the platform to be easy and understandable for the food industry because most of our customers were farmers or restaurant owners who weren’t tech-savvy.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We initially had a vision and did some mockups. Then, we wrote everything in detail and gave Artjoker Software a technical description. We took a couple of weeks to get to know each other. They’ve broken the project into sprints and built the software from scratch. On our side, we’ve handled all the technical aspects, documentation, and wireframing. They’ve done some design, but we’ve done most of it.

They used JavaScript for the backend and React for the frontend for the first project. For the mobile application, we’re using Node.js for the backend and React Native for the frontend. The app is a cross-platform for Android and iOS. 

What is the team composition?

For the first project, seven people were involved, including two frontend developers, three backend developers, one QA person, and one project manager. For the mobile app, there are two frontend developers, two backend developers, and one QA/project manager.

How did you come to work with Artjoker Software?

I found them on Clutch. I’d been following them for a few years and always liked their revision of UX design to make everything look nice.

We’ve spent close to $500,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in February 2019 and are still working on the second project.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’re making a profit. Sometimes we do have bugs. Their QA person does a great job finding issues, although sometimes we have to find them the hard way when a customer tells us. However, they fix them quickly, so it’s never an issue to repair them. Bugs are a normal part of development.

How did Artjoker Software perform from a project management standpoint?

We work biweekly in sprints and are consistently hitting our sprints. We’ve had the same project manager throughout the whole project. She’s one of the main reasons we stay with them. Even though the Russian Invasion of Ukraine started and we were seriously thinking about leaving this company, she was the reason we chose to stay. We’d never met a better project manager.

We use Jira and Confluence as management tools and Google Meet and phone calls to communicate.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re very skilled in the technologies they use and excellent with UX.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They need to improve their ability to interact with customers and coming with their own ideas. They’re used to working with strict specifications. It can be challenging if you’re a startup and not used to that.

Invest 2–3 weeks for a discovery phase before starting development. Make sure everyone is on the same page and understands the project in the same way you do.
