I’m the co-founder of Last Minute Services. We’re an on-demand services company that connects service providers with customers.

What challenge were you trying to address with AppStudio?

We hired AppStudio to develop our flagship mobile and web app. My business partner and I were clear about what we wanted the app to do, but we weren’t clear on the user flows and other factors relating to the app. As a result, we needed a team to help us.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We had initial discussions with a salesperson from AppStudio, and they showed a  couple of prototypes they’d made for another project similar to ours. They showed us the business requirements and sent us a proposal. We signed an agreement with them from there. Then, we started the design phase. 

It took six weeks to create the wireframes and high-fidelity mock-ups. We’ve since started developing the products. They’ve shared a development roadmap with us and facilitated biweekly sprints — they call us every two weeks to show us their progress, and we test what they’ve done so far. 

For features and functionality, the app has two sides. One is for the consumers, and the other is for businesses. Users can download the mobile app to register as a consumer. On the other side of that, service providers can use our web app to register and buy a subscription plan. They can select what kind of services they offer, make the payment, and onboard with the app. 

Consumers can choose services based on geolocation, so they have to fill out their location. The app uses this information to recommend service providers based on their coordinates. If I’m looking for a gardener, the app will recommend gardeners within a specific range near me. Users can see the reviews and the description of the provider’s services. The app also has an online payment feature, and consumers make payments after the services are delivered. 

AppStudio has also created a global admin app where we can control both the web app and mobile. We can view all customers and providers and deactivate profiles if necessary. For tools, we’ve used Figma and Adobe XD. The team uses React Native as the cross-platform technology for iOS and Android. Meanwhile, the web app is made using React.js.

We’ve worked with 8–9 teammates from AppStudio, including the developers, testers, and DevOps engineers. My main point of contact has been their designer and technical project manager. 

How did you come to work with AppStudio?

We found AppStudio as we were going through vendor profiles. We checked their services and the projects they’d worked on before. Our team also saw testimonials about their work from prominent people and industry giants. As a result, we decided to engage them.

How much have you invested with them?

Our investment has been around $70,000–$72,000. The initial budget for the design and development phases was around $54,000, but we wanted to add more features to the app that cost $14,000–$15,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

The engagement started in April 2023, and the project is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

AppStudio has met all of my expectations. It’s rare to find a vendor that pays so much attention to detail. They always deliver and are quick to address my feedback in terms of the functionality I want.

How did AppStudio perform from a project management standpoint?

To communicate, we’ve used Zoom and Teams. We connect every week for status updates and every two weeks for milestone delivery. This is planned out by their project manager, who is almost always available. 

For instance, they don’t operate on the weekends. However, I once sent the project manager an urgent message on a weekend, and she responded quickly. That saved my project demonstration on that day. 

Meanwhile, the entire project has been managed using Jira, which I use to raise tickets about any bugs I find while testing. I also leave comments on Figma, and they respond to them there. Everything else is sent via email.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’m impressed with their transparency in terms of their operations. I’ve worked with other software vendors before, and I’m not always given a clear representation of how those teams operate on a day-to-day basis. However, AppStudio shares that information from the get-go.  The entire process is so transparent that it’s a cakewalk for anyone to understand it even if they don’t have any technical background. It’s incredibly easy to understand. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there aren’t any. I have zero complaints about the entire process. In fact, I’ve recommended them to some of my friends.

I provided them with wireframes and the business plan, explaining what the project looked like and what I wanted it to be. Appstudio was my technology partner from the beginning of the project. The app is a productivity tool that allows users to customize the quick launch of apps and app features; it’s basically a lock screen pattern that launches other apps or intents within apps through a swipe of a finger that you customize. 

For example, you can create a U-pattern to launch the Instagram app and not only Instagram but also launch the camera within the Instagram app. You get to customize the pattern, and then link it to the app with the intent you want to open. So every time you go to the app and do the U-pattern, it always opens that particular intent, which in this example is the Instagram camera. We were super clear about our challenges in the beginning.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The first month after the launch was pretty impressive, getting around 1,500 downloads. I did the App Store optimization myself. I built this app to impress other companies that might want to implement the SDK into their operating systems or into their Software-as-a-Service offering. My focus was not making money on the app, but I did want to see if people would want to use it, so the download score was important to me. 

Right now, I probably have about 2,000 downloads, but I haven't spent anything on marketing, and the app has only been launched for about 2 months. I'm happy with the product in general; it has only had 2 crashes in 2 months, so the metrics are good.

The app wasn’t close to anything AppStudio had developed before, which was a challenge in itself. The design part went really well; they were very impressive, super responsive, and on time. The development, of course, had issues in terms of functionalities, just like any challenging project. However, the team was quick to offer alternate suggestions and approaches — AppStudio was on top of everything. 

The app is available on iOS. I have plans to create an Android version, but I might not need to. If the app gets acquired, all the company will need is the SDK [software development kit], and then they can do whatever they want with it. If it isn’t acquired in the near future, I might look into creating an Android version of the app.

Describe their project management. Did they deliver items on time? How did they respond to your needs?

I would give them a B-plus for project management. Communication was a bit off here and there, and I had to do a lot of project management on my end. I was on top of my project manager to make sure that the things we discussed with Appstudio were actually not looked over and forgotten.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I would highly rate the quality of their design as well as their responsiveness throughout the project. They were very helpful during hard times. I would often get frustrated and want things to get fixed, and they always made sure that they took care of the problem, even if it took multiple attempts. 

They were on their game in terms of how much they cared about their client’s satisfaction. Their development skills were also pretty good. With all the challenges in this project, I thought that I might end up with a subpar product, but I was really happy that they fixed all of the issues in the end. I think they had a different and much better developer who stepped in to fix a lot of problems.

Are there any areas for improvement or something AppStudio could have done differently?

I had 2 project managers from Appstudio within the project itself; one project manager left, and then I had a new one. Things like that usually mean that it will take some time before you get the new project manager caught up on your project, and you find yourself repeating things. 

Once the new project manager started and got updated with everything, things went much smoother. I did have to train and educate the new project manager on the product itself, which is super normal anytime you change project managers.

Though we initially hired AppStudio for iOS development, after we started our collaboration, we decided to make the app available for multiple platforms. The team has been responsible for scaling the app and working on user profiles and mapping to make the app more user-friendly. 

The app was initially created for hospital facilities and healthcare professionals looking for jobs. However, after working together, we decided to create a B2B platform so hospitals could internalize their operations.

We usually connect with the head of project management, and about 6–7 more individuals are involved in the project. We work with front- and backend designers, developers, and testers.

When we first called AppStudio, we expected a quotation from the first moment, but it took some time. We’re not sure if this is something they could have improved upon because they had to figure out what we were looking for, but they’re doing a good job overall.

I needed help developing a mobile application. My goal was to create an app for users that are unable to afford a therapist or a support group. I wanted to provide a self-help app where people can easily find podcasts and audiobooks to encourage them to move beyond their pain.

AppStudio is developing an app for iOS and Android devices. Initially, I only had the app’s idea, and AppStudio suggested creating a website too. AppStudio is building the app from scratch using React Native, and I’m unsure which platform they’re using to create my website. AppStudio is currently working on the design.

Our app’s main purpose is to offer self-help books and podcasts for our users. Eventually, we want to also provide a directory of support groups and therapy within the users’ communities. AppStudio is also working on creating the required database for the app.

As our company started to expand, we needed to bring in staff with specific expertise to help us meet the requirements of our end clients’ projects.

Initially, we had a discovery phase with AppStudio’s partnership director, where they explained their services, and we explained our project’s requirements. Since they’re a more service-based company, we discussed our special staffing needs with their upper management. AppStudio then provided us with a list of resources, and we proceeded from there.

AppStudio has helped us with different development projects using React Native and Flutter. One of the projects is a fintech app, which is a gold trading platform that uses pre-authorized debits from banks. AppStudio is also working on a native Android and iOS app, a travel assistance platform to connect with locals with similar interests while traveling. 

We work with AppStudio under continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) management; we run tests using TestFlight, use Firebase to release tickets, and track crashes using Crashlytics and resolve them as we go.

The amount of AppStudio teammates we’ve worked with has fluctuated during our engagement, the maximum being 30 resources simultaneously. We’ve worked with different specialists, including UI/UX designers, design leads, Android and iOS developers, Java experts, and DevOps engineers.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

AppStudio is still developing the apps, and our end clients are happy so far. Thanks to the resources and solutions AppStudio offers us, we’ve had more clients influx since we started working with them. We can offer a broader range of services to our end clients.

Bugs and crashes are common in software development processes, and AppStudio has fixed them when they've arised. We keep track of our progress and haven’t seen anything unusual during our engagement with AppStudio.

How did AppStudio perform from a project management standpoint?

Although AppStudio offers project management services, we handle the project management in-house. We work under biweekly sprints with AppStudio, and our project coordinator monitors their team’s work closely. Depending on the deliverables, they have daily Zoom meetings in the mornings and evenings. Moreover, we collaborate with AppStudio through Jira and Asana and communicate through email.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’m most impressed with AppStudio’s team. They have different specialists from various expertise levels depending on our budget for each project. AppStudio has a solution for every problem, and I like that.

I can’t think of anything for AppStudio to improve at the top of my mind.

I'm the operations manager and sales head at a company providing digital marketing, social media marketing, and personal branding services to some of the biggest companies from all over the world. CEOs, founders, and entrepreneurs hire us to create their personal image and help push their online sales.

What challenge were you trying to address with AppStudio?

We didn’t have a very good website, so we wanted to optimize it to provide more features and a better UX design. We also needed help with developing a platform or software tool to assist our team in processing inquiries and using those inquiries to generate the maximum ROI possible. To achieve this, we needed a way to understand what our team needed, their pain points, and how they could optimally handle such a huge volume of leads. We hired AppStudio to help us build the products we needed.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

AppStudio has helped us build our new website and a CRM tool within it from scratch using Django. They’ve also used Python, Java, and an SQL database as part of the technology stack. Moreover, they’ve used AWS for hosting, which they now handle.

Throughout this project, we told AppStudio that we wanted our sales data to be distributed across our business’ major different verticals so that everyone was informed about particular sales at any given time. Therefore, they also built a real-time information feature for every inquiry. With this feature, we can see all our inquiries in real time to keep track of issues and more. Moving forward, AppStudio will provide us with ongoing support.

We’ve worked with a main project manager and 7–8 other people from AppStudio. Although the team size has fluctuated depending on the tasks, the core team includes two designers and two developers.

We started looking for web development companies in Canada on Google and on Clutch. After evaluating several reviews, we ultimately chose AppStudio.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started in December 2022, and they delivered the first beta version of the website and the CRM tool in January 2023. However, there’s still ongoing work for maintenance and optimization.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Our new tool for handling leads and customers is very good, meeting our expectations and demands. Within two weeks, we’ve had an outstanding increase in direct lead conversions. Moreover, the quality of leads has also improved.

How did AppStudio perform from a project management standpoint?

AppStudio’s project management is pretty good — it was a very smooth development process. We’ve had weekly meetings with our main point of contact via Skype, and we also communicate via email.

AppStudio delivered what they promised.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Before choosing an agency, do your research online and try to find what their employees are saying about them. Additionally, talk to the actual person who will be guiding your project and assess the ideas they have about your vision. AppStudio’s team and ideas are really good; they’ve helped us make the right decisions.

I’m the product director at The Simply Brand. We provide services to realtors whose major concerns include transportation and storage. Realtors can sign up with us, and we’ll store their signs and inventory. We’ll also be solely responsible for transporting their inventory; our team also takes care of the installations and removals of such things. We have our own drivers, too.

What challenge were you trying to address with AppStudio?

We operate manually and offline — without any technology usage. However, we want to streamline the process and have a reliable app to do that. As a result, we hired AppStudio.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

In the beginning, we weren’t sure what the platform would be like or what user rules it would have. Ultimately, though, AppStudio helped us develop the app as a web and mobile platform. Since we weren’t technical people, we simply explained our business to them and asked them to bring the app to life. We didn’t even know what user roles would exist on the app. 

From there, they designed the website through wireframing. They gave us black and white wireframes and mock-ups based on our requirements. These wireframes also had various iterations. The team then sent us a functional requirement document that explained the whole flow of the mobile and web app. After that, they worked on integrations and developed the app. 

Currently, there are three types of users on our platform, namely the realtors, the drivers, and the global admin. The realtors can use the web and mobile app, while drivers mainly use the mobile app. Our admin panel uses both. To be clear, the app isn’t live yet; we’re still working on a few tweaks on it. However, the bulk of AppStudio’s work has been done. We’re planning to go live in a week or two.

We’ve worked with 7–8 team members from AppStudio. One senior business analyst is involved, along with one product manager. We also work with one project manager. Their developers have also collaborated with us to help us understand certain things. 

How did you come to work with AppStudio?

We got in touch with AppStudio through one of our colleagues who had worked with them on production before. We also searched them on Google and saw the reviews about their work. After we were introduced to each other, we jumped in on calls with them. Their business analyst was present in the calls, which were all recorded. Then, they started drafting a business requirement document for us. The engagement started after that.

We’ve invested around $200,000 CAD (approximately $157,000 USD). 

What is the status of this engagement?

Our project started in June 2021, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

AppStudio’s engagement with us has been consistent. They’ve been particular with what they’re delivering. We don’t have any technical background, so we truly need them to hold our hands and walk us through the process — they’ve done that so efficiently.

Overall, we’re happy with the way they’ve engaged u for this project. They’ve also shown dedication toward creating the project exactly the way we like. Moreover, the team doesn’t get frustrated with us even though we don’t know much about technology. They’re patient in guiding us through the project. 

How did AppStudio perform from a project management standpoint?

AppStudio’s project management has been great. The timelines have been adjusted, but that’s because of us: we’ve added extra work to the scope of the engagement even after it’s been finalized. The team has informed us that the additional work will require timeline modifications, and we’ve agreed to that. In any case, when they share timelines with us, they always deliver 1–2 days ahead of schedule. 

The project has also been delayed because of the payment integration. For context, we don’t want to integrate Apple Wallet into the app because they take a 30% cut. Given this, AppStudio has helped us find a middle ground by talking to Apple Store. In the end, we’ve been able to integrate with Stripe as our payment processor. Simply put, the team has gone out of their way for our needs — we’re truly happy about that. 

In terms of tools, we use Atlassian tools. Specifically, we use Jira and Confluence, where we upload all of our documents. Meanwhile, they use Jira for their development sprints. We can also see their progress on that platform. When we raise tickets on Jira, AppStudio always responds to us within an hour or so. 

In terms of communication, every morning, we check in on them through Jira, and from Mondays through Fridays, we connect with them through Zoom calls, which we schedule via emails. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

AppStudio is committed to doing what they’ve promised us; they always deliver things with outstanding quality every single time, and we don’t even have to run after them. In my experience, it’s difficult to run after a team when we don’t know what they’re doing. However, AppStudio is always on their toes — they always give us dates and tell us the due delivery dates. Overall, they’re efficient and committed to our project. That’s truly important for us. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there aren’t any. I hope they continue what they’re doing right now because it’s perfect.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be thorough in what you tell AppStudio. Even if you don’t have any written documents or proof of work, explain to them what you want. They’ll deliver for you. Simply communicate with them, and they’ll have the solution for you.
