I found blackthorn.ai through a friend’s recommendation. We received other business proposals and liked the content and architecture of blackthorn.ai’s proposal.  How much have you invested with them? We’ve spent around $250,000–$500,000 with blackthorn.ai. We plan to increase this budget since we just realized we’ll need to add more staff to our team.  What is the status of this engagement? We started working with blackthorn.ai in July 2022, and our partnership is ongoing. We’ve worked with other companies in the past, and when they pivot and change, sometimes the changes aren’t clear to them, even though we had previously discussed them verbally.  Before working with blackthorn.ai, we had developed our machine-learning model up until the point of clinical trials, but we had trouble getting past that. The way blackthorn.ai stepped in and helped us revamp the model was excellent. blackthorn.ai has developed in a couple of weeks what we tried to develop for about a month and a half. Before working with blackthorn.ai, we tried to hire internal developers. However, blackthorn.ai’s staff background really stood out.  They really helped us with the model’s autoencoders. I’m a chemist with a heavy programming background, and I don’t think we’d ever figured out how they architect these autoencoders. We’re actually thinking about publishing papers with them about this case. Overall, our collaboration with blackthorn.ai has been great. They’ve developed detailed code and created great reports, which allow anybody from their team to continue the work at any given point. Whenever they say they’ll deliver something by a certain date, they keep their word and deliver it even ahead of time on some occasions. I don’t need to be on top of them because blackthorn.ai works autonomously, which I appreciate. We don’t have to meet with blackthorn.ai that often. They’re always descriptive in their emails about the work they’re planning to do. We have a quick check-up meeting with blackthorn.ai every other Tuesday, and if they run into a problem in the meantime, they email us so we can jump into a call. We also have a long call with the development team, usually about 1–2 hours long. Moreover, blackthorn.ai’s recently sent an SoW for our extended engagement that includes the revision history, the list of data sets, the implementation roadmap, the responsibilities of each party, and an executive summary at the end. We show that the use of diverse methods improves the prediction metrics. Impact The binding affinity estimation MAE is ~1.5 kcal/mol of the Gibbs free energy. Taking into account the energy of water-water hydrogen bond O−H···:O (5.0 kcal/mol), we can conclude that it is a fairly accurate estimate. We implemented strict security measures and encryption protocols to protect sensitive data and prevent unauthorized access.   To ensure the software was user-friendly and efficient, we conducted multiple rounds of testing. We gathered feedback from the client's billing team. We made necessary modifications and improvements to the software based on their feedback to ensure a smooth and efficient billing process.   The result was a robust and user-friendly billing system software that met the client's specific needs and requirements. The software has dramatically improved the efficiency and accuracy of their billing process, saving them time and money in the long run. We are proud to have developed a solution that has positively impacted our client's operations. ### Molecular Binding Affinity Prediction Custom machine-learning service for a medical diagnostics company Challenge: Reduce number of drug candidates tested during experimental bioactivity screening. Cut expenses and duration of early drug discovery phases. Solution: Our team developed an ensemble of ML models for binding affinity estimation. The ensemble demonstrated compelling results of MAE ~1.5 kcal/mol and an inference time of 1 ms. It allowed the selection of high-efficacy candidates and the filtering out of low-affine ones. As a result, we reduced the number of synthesized compounds for bioactivity screening tenfold. We used molecular structures and activity data to build AI model predicting unknown molecular properties.   ### Genome Analysis Data Platform A large-scale whole-genome sequence (WGS) genotyping and annotation platform for a midsize pharmaceutical company Challenge: To create a tool to elucidate the role of genetic mutations in vulnerability to diseases Solution: Genomics data platform enabling scientists to explore genomes for a US-based global biopharmaceuticals company. The platform consisted of a web portal for researchers and admins, genomic batch data workflows, post-processing and warehousing. Our team also designed UI/UX and implemented all bioinformatics pipelines, including raw reads alignment, aligned reads QC, variant calling, variant calls annotation, concluding the entire cycle of the product development. Patients suffer repeated visits to hospitals, anxiety about diagnosis delays, and false radiologist conclusions. Solution: Our team designed and developed an AI-powered medical imaging analysis platform that, when paired with a radiologist, increased breast cancer detection accuracy by 20-30% in clinical trials compared to a radiologist alone. The system combined and analyzed data streams from the VR and mobile applications, wearable and insertable sensors, patient health records, and metrics of multiple organ systems and provided the user with insights into their health, advice on diet and exercise, and a healthy lifestyle. To handle noisy data, missing peaks, and fiducial points, required proper data preprocessing Solution: a comprehensive application that seamlessly integrates with the client's noisy hardware (wearable sensors) and delivers accurate cardiovascular metrics such as PEP, LVET, IVCT. The application outperformed the legacy POC solution by a significant margin, achieving an accuracy and sensitivity of over 70%. Stack: Python, JavaScript, PyTorch, Azure   ### Drug Dosage Optimisation Using AI Personalizing kidney disease drug dosage and preventing toxicity cases in clinical trials, uncovering factors of resistivity to medicine, and optimizing the cost of the therapy. Challenge: to find out way some patients didn’t respond to the medicine, personalize drug dosage, and prevent cases of drug toxicity.  Solution: data records of years of treatment history and hundreds of patients according to the unified protocol were used to build a system for early detection of drug resistance and toxicity. During 30 days  of clinical testing of the system, 12 cases of drug poisoning have been prevented; 3  cases of drug resistance have been identified. Drug dosage was either lowered or canceled, saving the substance and decreasing medical spending. Challenge: As mobile games became popular, the number of releases exceeded the capabilities of the manual testing team. The challenge was to minimize or eliminate manual game testing. Solution: Self-learning AI agents for game levels and characters were developed and validated. Interactive dashboards automated reporting of game statistics, bugs, and inefficiencies and delivered findings directly to game developers, testers, and management. The AI kit reduced the involvement of human testers from 3 hours to 7 minutes per level and allowed for parallel testing of many games and game levels through autoscaling, containerization, and centralized workload management via Kubernetes. We developed statistical models within SAS to assess the impact of various factors (patient demographics, drug dose) on the development of ADAs and their association with clinical outcomes. Finally, we provided a report with insights into immune response to the vaccine. We rebuilt the Screener tool from scratch using a scalable, cloud-native architecture and modern frontend/backend stack. ### AI-Powered Corrosion Detection Client required a fully automated solution capable of detecting corrosion on offshore structures, identifying coating failures, weld lines, and structural edges, and assessing the severity of degradation.
