Introduce your business and what you do there.

I have a senior role at WellBrain, a digital chronic pain management platform. Our app enables physicians and providers to prescribe medically relevant guided meditations or mindfulness practices to patients suffering from chronic pain or opioid addiction.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with A2?

We engaged A2 to develop our iOS platform from scratch, including both the frontend and backend.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

A2 designed and developed an iOS app from scratch, incorporating third-party integrations such as biofeedback devices that measure brainwaves. They built both the frontend and backend architecture, including our postscripts database, while working on several different stacks such as Python.

What is the team composition?

I generally work with one lead developer directly, who translates tasks to others on their team. Depending on the month, we may work with up to six developers.

How did you come to work with A2?

They were hired before I started working for the company, but one of my colleagues knew of them based on some of the work they'd done in the past that was similar to our app.

How much have you invested with them?

We've invested around $125,000–$250,000 over the last two and a half years.

What is the status of this engagement?

They've been working with us since September 2015, and the relationship is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

A2 has successfully delivered an app that's allowed us to generate revenue and interest. Their efforts have been critical in helping us give more people the tools to practice mindfulness.

They just completed a critical third-party integration for a conference last month. Despite the rushed timeline, they got it done on time and helped us make a very positive impression at the event.

How did A2 perform from a project management standpoint?

Their communications are good in terms of actively using Trello and Jira boards to stay on top of tasks. I do, however, have to push them to be a little more thorough in documentation, which is common in their field.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They have a strong sense of what the backend should look like and how it should be architected. They also do a decent job at developing the frontend, despite it not being their main service offering.

Are there any areas they could improve?

As they grow, I'd recommend that they set up service level agreements when it comes to answering emails within a certain timeframe. While they're excellent at communicating through project management tools, they're a little bit sluggish to respond to emails.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

To get the most out of the relationship, I think it's wise to set up expectations for communicating. We have regular biweekly calls with their team, which has helped both our teams stay on the same page.

The team is exceptionally qualified with product and software development. They are able to iterate quickly, communicate well and are very talented developers.

Their ability to really understand the product and think ahead with the design to avoid having to rebuild elements of the application in the future.
