Our engagement with CROG is ongoing. In 2023, we relaunched www.signatureheadstones.com on a new e-commerce platform. We quickly realized that our conversion rate was negatively impacted by issues that went deeper than the usual issues associated with a site relaunch. We needed a multi-disciplined team to help us from basic user experience to sophisticated custom web dev.

I’m the founder of the Canadian Mining Report. We are a news aggregator, and offer educational content about companies and their projects within the mining industry.

What challenge were you trying to address with CRO Gurus?

Our original site was built seven years ago, and although we liked the brand and design, we recognized a lot of weaknesses in terms of the UX on mobile devices, sales funnels, and the quality of landing pages. We hired CRO Gurus to help us optimize our website and fix those issues.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Almost immediately, they set up sprints and started gathering information on our competitors. They have access to Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and they use Microsoft Clarity. CRO Gurus are monitoring the site performance, loading speed, and baseline performance indicators in addition to the analytics. 

CRO Gurus uses Google Data Studio to aggregate the data from different sources and present it in a more easily digestible format. They also use various tools to analyze readability. Around 95% of our content is read on mobile devices, and they analyze our content to understand how a piece will perform based on subheadings, image location, and page breaks. 

For the content that we write that is more analytical, CRO Gurus helps us break down articles to keep readers interested, even when the paragraphs are longer and more difficult to keep users engaged. 

We have recorded biweekly sprints, and those calls usually last about an hour. CRO Gurus presents us with data and things they’ve observed on the site like formatting that is off, or things that are broken on the site. They also take this time to suggest more proactive solutions, like ways to update designs on pages. 

All the pieces brought forward in these meetings are recorded in a log so that we can easily find the issues when our internal team goes to fix them.

We work with Samuel (Founder), a project manager who leads our meetings, and there is usually a copywriter.

We put an advertisement on Upwork, and based on certain filters and specifications, we narrowed the list down to about 20 companies. We went through a long process of interviewing and vetting different conversion rate optimization agencies, but eventually landed with CRO Gurus. We were impressed with how Samuel communicated with us about how everything would work.

Our average reading time on the website, especially for our mobile site, has improved. Our sign-ups for free content have also increased, and they’ve provided suggestions for some of our landing pages that have increased the time on those pages and our sales to a degree. We see many positive indicators even though the work is still ongoing. 

How did CRO Gurus perform from a project management standpoint?

They provide excellent project management for us. We have a good working cadence, and they make everything very simple for our team to fix things. They’re incredibly organized and send out agendas before every call; they also allow us to adjust anything beforehand. The calls are always very productive, and they stay on topic the whole time.

We communicate via Zoom and email, and use Google Drive for all our documents and recording log.  

What did you find most impressive about them?

They do a fantastic job of communicating strengths and weaknesses with us and how they will approach something. They have deep technical knowledge and are very talented at copywriting, design, and tech stacks. They have a lot of experience in different fields, and they bring valuable expertise to the table. 

CRO Gurus understands the differences between desktop and mobile and how to effectively create each one so that they are easily consumable for our readers. They understand the UX experience and know what it will take to keep an audience engaged. Overall, it has been an extremely wonderful experience.  

Are there any areas they could improve?

We would like to directly integrate them more into our system to expedite the process and put them in contact with the right people more efficiently, but that is more on our end than theirs.

I had some clients that really needed help with their websites before it would make sense to drive paid traffic to their sites. I used these services strategically to help our clients make the right changes to their sites before I invested large amounts of client funds to traffic. Our goal was to get our merchants to a point where paid traffic was an option for them.

I followed their work and results closely on both Linkedin & Youtube and then spoke to them about this potential collaboration. They listened carefully and were able to suggest a solution that was both cost-effective and impactful.

I needed actionable change plans for these eCommerce stores so I came up with an agreement for them to audit these stores on our behalf and then the clients would fix the issues with their developers. The audits included front-end changes, comprehensive reasoning behind those changes, as well as examples when needed. The deliverables were PDF listings of recommendations usually 20-30 pages long telling developers what to do. We mostly used Asana for communication (both tasks and Asana chat).

I had the initial call with Samuel (Founder) and then worked directly with Tudor (Consultant) from there. So I was in touch with one person after the agreement was finished.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

The deliverables were very well made & professional. They explained things thoroughly every time & I rarely had any questions about the suggestions. The results were difficult to measure from the data perspective since I started advertising right away. With all of these clients though I was very comfortable with the sites that I was now guiding traffic to (something that wasn’t the case beforehand).

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

I always got what was promised (although often last minute but still). They have very solid processes in creating these services while still producing custom & valuable work. I always got all my questions answered within 24 hours.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Their consistency and deep knowledge of e-commerce CRO really stood out to us. Usually, small companies tend to be a bit unstructured but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a company that cared so much about the details and had honed their reports to this degree.

While our experience with CRO Gurus was overwhelmingly positive, there are a couple of areas where we feel they could improve. One small area for growth would be increasing the depth of user segmentation during the analysis phase. Though they did a great job segmenting users based on behavior, there were a few opportunities to delve deeper into the different stages of the buyer journey, especially when it came to tracking repeat visitors versus new leads. This would have helped us tailor our approach even more effectively for each group.

Additionally, while the overall communication was excellent, there were a few times when we felt there could have been a bit more proactive outreach from their side during periods of waiting on A/B test results. While we understand that results can take time, a little more frequent touchpoint during these periods could have alleviated some minor concerns on our side.

Despite raising concerns, no constructive suggestions were provided, and blame was shifted to other factors. We spent a large sum of money and ended up with a negative ROI.

The client was delighted with our work and chose to continue working with us. This second engagement lasted four months (I'm wondering why they chose to stay if we truly were such a terrible partner).

Nothing was promised regarding the results and we mentioned that with a seasonal business like hers, we cannot promise results will constantly go up every month. We can validate them with A/B testing since many other variables are at play than just CRO. However, we cannot fully control the exact revenue outcomes as we only affect a piece of the sales funnel.

We did a test with all the recommended changes, seeing a 21% improvement in sales (excellent for a 7-figure store and well covers our engagement fees). Of course, this was a short test, and it stopped when the client was happy to launch the variant.

Given all this, I believe this is more about her recent performance (after our engagement) and emotional issues, as she was struggling with her store and needed someone else to blame for her problems; we're concluding this as the review was provided on July 9th, two months after our engagement ended.

I cannot understand how she can make a 21% A/B-tested improvement to be such a disappointing result. I am very critical of project delivery, and we have incredibly high standards (as evidenced by all the positive reviews). 
So, our conscience regarding this case is clear, and we still sleep well knowing that we do excellent work for our clients. Unfortunately, despite getting good, measurable, and proven results, we still got an unfair review like this.

Last year, CR sat at 1.58% - 6 YOY. 

In the last two months (since the changes were pushed live), our CR is sitting at 1.88% +27% YOY. We have only recently gone live with phase 2 optimisations, I'm confident this number will continue to increase. MTD shows a more accurate picture - CR sitting at 2.29% +20% YOY.

Project management was very efficient and managed through Asana, with monthly check ins to keep track of project and approve anything necessary. 

All of the deliverables (and a few extras I added in at the start of the project), were all delivered as promised.
