What challenge were you trying to address with William R. Scoville CPA LLC?

After I left my company to join another position, the HR department accidentally keyed in that I had 40 dependents, which really screwed up my taxes. My federal taxes weren’t being taken out, and it was a total mess. I hired Bill (Principal) to resolve the issue.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement? 

Bill and his team redid and resubmitted my taxes for the last three years, sorting out my previous situation and calculating my taxes to make sure that I paid everything that I owed. He asked for very basic information about what I’d earned on my W-2 forms and put together a very detailed tax packet for each year. I basically just signed where I needed to sign and wrote out a check for the final amount owed.

His team even prepared the mail-ins for me. All I had to do was put the packet in the envelope provided and drop it off in a mailbox. Whenever I got a follow-up from the IRS, I would reach out to Bill for assistance. Most of the time, it turned out that the IRS reached out preemptively before they processed the other stuff that we’d sent in, so Bill’s calculations ended up being correct.

What is the team composition? 

I primarily worked with Bill who delegated the work to Bob (CPA). Bob was usually the one who responded to my questions.

How did you come to work with William R. Scoville CPA LLC?

I’d used someone else that my parents had referred but was really unhappy with the job. They sent me an incredibly detailed list asking for specific financial questions such as how much mortgage interest I earned and wouldn’t go forward with the job until I provided as much information as I could. However, if I was going through the effort to dig up all of this information, then I wouldn’t have hired an accountant in the first place.

In the end, they didn’t do the right calculations and had me send in a check for $600 — which didn’t cover the issue with the 40 dependents. I later learned that they didn’t actually file my previous year’s taxes and filed an extension instead. I thought I’d been clear about needing to file my taxes — it was upsetting, and I wanted someone better.

After other unsuccessful tax consultants, I got a referral to William R. Scoville CPA LLC from one of my co-workers. Bill and his team were willing to work with me the very next day and got things done pretty quickly.

How much have you invested with them?

I paid them $375 to do my 2016, 2017, and 2018 taxes. They didn’t charge me any more than the original amount for small follow-up services, and they didn’t charge a lot.

What is the status of this engagement?

I started with them right before my extension was due back in September 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

It was clear that they really knew what they were doing, so a situation like this wasn’t a big deal. They were able to quickly calculate that I owed the IRS $17,000, which was a weight off of my shoulders. I also appreciated that they helped me get this done in one go rather than having to go back and make corrections. 

How did William R. Scoville CPA LLC perform from a project management standpoint?

I spoke to Bill initially, and he delegated the work to Bob. Bob reached out to me with a detailed list of what he needed the next day. If there was any information that I couldn’t get, he got it himself, which was good.

From then on, I was able to call either one of them to answer a question. We communicated back and forth over email as needed. I spoke with them every couple of days between October–November 2019 and five times over the course of two weeks in December 2019.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The most impressive part of working with them was their ability to get the job done so quickly. They put in their due diligence to get all of the calculations correct and found out what we needed to know. 

From there, they prepared everything in detailed packets for me to sign. I was literally able to be done after that one meeting and drop off three envelopes into the mailbox. They also provided instructions on how to mail it, how to request a return slip to confirm that the IRS received everything, and more.

Finally, their communication stood out. I’ve worked with people all the time who just want to get my business and then become unresponsive — it almost seems like that’s the norm in business these days. However, Bill and Bob were always willing to answer my questions right away.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They should probably improve their marketing and website, but I don’t know where they are in their business. Maybe they already have a number of loyal clients and aren’t looking to expand.

If you’re having trouble with your taxes or just want someone else to do them for you, call William R. Scoville CPA LLC. It’s not very expensive, and they get things done quickly and painlessly. You should also start earlier than later.
