Describe the scope of work in detail. Please include a summary of key deliverables.

The project with VisionElements focused on developing and validating AI-based image-analysis tools for neonatal brain MRI, specifically for automatic volumetric quantification of the cerebral ventricles and brain parenchyma in preterm infants with hydrocephalus. 
The work included building and training several deep-learning segmentation models (2D U‑Net with ResNet-18 backbone, 3D U‑Net, and a transformer-based 3D U‑Net-R), setting up the full data pipeline (curation of 207 neonatal MRI scans, ground-truth creation, train/validation/test split), and optimizing the algorithms for robust performance on 1T point-of-care MRI data acquired in the NICU. 
Deliverables included production-ready segmentation models for multiple ventricular chambers and whole-brain volume, quantitative reports (statistics vs. expert ground truth), and tools for computing ventricle and brain volumes and ventricle‑to‑brain volume ratios as a potential biomarker to support clinical decision-making on surgical intervention in hydrocephalus.

The key measurable outcomes were the segmentation accuracy metrics and the strength of volumetric agreement between the AI models and expert ground truth.

VisionElements’ project management was excellent throughout the engagement. They set clear milestones at the outset, communicated a realistic timeline, and consistently delivered interim and final deliverables on or before the agreed deadlines. Whenever scope evolved or clinical/technical priorities shifted, they responded quickly and flexibly, proposing concrete options and transparently explaining timeline or effort implications. 
Communication was smooth and proactive: they regularly shared progress updates, clarified assumptions, and came prepared to meetings with data, visuals, and alternative solutions. Overall, they combined very strong technical execution with a truly collaborative attitude.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

What impressed me most about VisionElements was the combination of deep, hands‑on AI expertise with a very pragmatic, product‑oriented mindset. They did not just “train models”; they actively helped refine the algorithm, suggested better success metrics, and repeatedly challenged assumptions to make sure the solution would work in a real environment. 
Their ability to navigate state‑of‑the‑art architectures (2D/3D U‑Nets and transformers) while still keeping the pipeline efficient and robust on limited neonatal MRI data was genuinely unique. On top of that, their willingness to explain complex technical trade‑offs in clear, accessible language made the collaboration feel like a true partnership rather than a typical vendor relationship.

What challenge were you trying to address with Vision Elements?

We needed help with algorithm R&D for 4D ultrasound tracking.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Vision Elements developed a real-time tool for segmentation and tracking in 4D ultrasound data for partial nephrectomies with limited data.
The team also generated synthetic data and evaluated classical computer vision algorithms and deep learning-based UNet/transformer architectures for suitability.As for the deliverables, Vision Elements provided proof of concept Python code in a 3D slicer/VTK environment, a highly optimized real-time algorithm implemented in C++/CUDA, and a technical report.
