Timo Fixer co. assists foreign media crews in Finland providing both pre production services and daily fixer/producer services during videoshootings in all kinds of television productions.

What specific goals or objectives did you hire Storytailors to accomplish?

I started collaborating with Storytailors, because the company has created such an international ecosystem in which I have a magnificent possibility to utilize my broad expertise of tv work and journalism.

Creating content for television is always teamwork. Tv-industry creates constantly new formats and ways of storytelling. In our joint projects I get valuable support from Storytailors and at the same time I have a chance to learn new practices also from our mutual clients. This triangle shaped working model is a win-win game for all the participants of the project.

Last spring I had an opportunity to work together with Storytailors supporting a big entertainment project of an Italian tv-production company. During that job I learned a lot about tv-work although I already had 40 years experience in it.

Last spring an italian tv-crew of 25 persons flew to Finland to shoot an episode of an entertainment series about tourism. They still had to recruit quite many people from Finland to the project. The Italian production company was very skillful and contacted us almost two months before the shootings started.    The producer of Storytailors started immediately calculating the costs of the project and I seeked her contacts of different local enterprises and entrepreneurs.

Soon it was evident that the crew ought to drop out many planned scenes from the manuscript if we could not find ways to excise different costs significantly.  This led for instance to the decision that the team  would not rent bus and minibuses with professional drivers for videoshootings in Lapland. Instead the team decided to rent minibuses and vans and the crew members and I took care of driving.

Storytailors was ready to pay all the rental costs immediately, when the pick up of the vehicles took place. The producer got such a deal with the rental company that the crew members did not need to use their personal credit cards for the guarantee-payments. The videoshootings lasted three days in Lapland and 3 days in Helsinki. The speed of the production was hard and some sudden changes had to be made to the plans.

It led to minor mistakes also, but the producers - the italian one and the one from Storytailors - managed to concetrate to the most important things all the time. The strategy of  Storytailors was the same till the end. We worked all the time to keep the costs in control so that the quality of the program production would not collapse.   In Helsinki we rented again minibuses and vans, but some trailers as well for the transportation of technical equipments and luggages.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The complex production of the Italian customer was fulfilled in a tight schedule without severe problems. This was an absolute necessity because the videshootings of the series continued already next week in Germany. Storytailors helped the client to secure the quality of the video production by seeking ways to restrain the costs of supporting services.

Describe their project management. Did they deliver items on time? How did they respond to your needs?

The producer of Storytailors supported me all the time during the project. Her competence and ability to concentrate to essential things was adorable. We had many planning sessions already before the actual production began and after the job was over we summed up our experiences.

During the production I got all the help I needed and Storytailors also made all the payments in due time. Also the Italian company did pre production work exeptionally well. Their representants even visited in Helsinki and Rovaniemi to check the locations of videoshootings in advance. This ensured partially that the team managed fufill the project in schedule.

This project of entertainment was the most exeptional and instructive that I have had with Storytailors. I believe we learned some practices that we can use also in other projects. However the most important things I learned during this hectic gig were very basic things like these:

• Listen to Your collaborators and clients carefully!
• Talk less, listen more!
• Don´t hesitate asking if you do not understand clearly the ideas and wishes of Your work mates!
• What ever You do, make it simple!

Are there any areas for improvement or something Storytailors could have done differently?

There is always a possibility to make things better, but I can't point out any severe mistakes that Storytailors would have made during the project I have been analysing. I appreciate the collaboration I have had with Storytailors because the staff of the company has had a positive and constructive approach to its collaborators and clients. The attitude has been this: We are solving problems, not chasing mistakes or errors.
