Shalan Stained Glass LLC

Shalan Stained Glass specializes in the conservation and restoration of stained and leaded glass windows for churches, public buildings and private residences. The studio also designs and fabricates new stained glass windows in various architectural styles. Shalan Stained Glass has collaborated with architects, consultants and other stained glass professionals on a variety of projects.

DESIGN

I consider myself more a designer/craftsman than an artist and I enjoy the challenges of working with clients and their sometimes preconceived notions of what a stained glass window should look like. I often begin the design process by looking for cues in the existing architecture and interior of a building. I enjoy working with handblown glass and clear textured glass and I try to incorporate both of them as much as possible in my new work. They serve to obscure the view to the exterior without completely cutting off that view and they allow natural light into the space. They also help to accentuate the lead lines which I consider to be an important part of my designs.

FABRICATION

Fabrication consists of a knowledge of the materials one works with along with an understanding of how they fit together in order to successfully execute a project. At Shalan Stained Glass, our work is fabricated using the traditional tools, techniques and materials of the stained glass industry. We strive for the highest quality craftsmanship - what skilled artisans demonstrate when they create a finished work with passion, care and attention to detail.

RESTORATION

The studio’s approach to any restoration project includes attention to the detail and craftsmanship of the original window. Existing conditions are documented through photographs, annotated rubbings and written notes. They serve as a guide in understanding how a window was built, the materials and techniques used in its creation and any previous attempts at repair or restoration.
