I have been working in healthcare for around 13 years. I started as a care assistant in a hospital department for acute geriatrics. Nowadays this department would probably be called a palliative unit. Even then I came in contact with the care of people with a terminal lead and dying. And in fact I have never let go of the special care for this group of people.



During my training I was allowed to do a project about dying in the hospital, while working in the district nursing I attended a seminar to work as a volunteer in hospice home care. Here I also gained a lot of inspiration for my nursing care for dying people. And of course in the home situation I also guided a number of people and their loved ones in their last days of life until the moment of death.



In October 2011 I moved from Germany to the Netherlands to marry my dear wife. Since then I have been working in palliative night care and hospice care.



As a well-known doctor from the Cadenza hospital in Rotterdam also says: palliative care is a profession. It is more than a slightly different form of care, it is something completely different. It is not about healing (like in the hospital or in rehabilitation). It is not about nursing (care) as in the nursing home or in home care / district nursing. In palliative care, it's all about comfort. That a person can also experience maximum comfort in the last days of his life. And that goes much deeper than just the absence of pain, nausea and confusion. It asks people to see the whole. It requires people to be seen as one being with physical (physical), psychological (mental) and social needs.
