Kea Aerospace is a Christchurch-based aerospace company developing a solar-powered stratospheric aircraft, the Kea Atmos, designed to operate in the stratosphere for months at a time and provide high-resolution aerial imagery.

We engaged Payper to announce our newly signed partnership with NASA — a significant milestone for the company and one we wanted handled well. The goals were straightforward: get the news in front of as many New Zealanders as possible, secure tier-one media coverage across broadcast and print, and position Kea as a serious player in the global aerospace conversation.

The engagement was a single announcement campaign on a tight turnaround. Payper got across our technology and the significance of the partnership quickly, then built and executed a media strategy aimed at national reach. Their work covered press release writing, angle development, building a targeted NZ media list across broadcast, print and podcast outlets, direct journalist pitching, and coordinating interviews and placements through to publication.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The campaign generated five pieces of coverage reaching an estimated 500,000+ people, which was an excellent result for a single announcement. Highlights included a feature on a 6pm TV news bulletin (Newshub), national radio coverage, regional print, and a podcast feature on Bernard Hickey's The Kākā. Total project spend was around $4,000, which worked out to roughly $0.80 per 100 people reached — extremely efficient for the level of coverage.

Project management was tight. The turnaround was short and Payper handled it without dropping anything. Communication was direct and proactive — they came to us with clear questions, drafted quickly, and managed the journalist coordination so we could focus on being ready for interviews. Very easy to work with.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Two things. First, the speed at which they understood our space — aerospace isn't a sector most PR people work in, and they got across it quickly enough to brief journalists confidently. Second, the pay-per-coverage model, only paying for placements that actually landed made the engagement feel low-risk and keep things very transparent unlike many other PR agencies in the market.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Payper could have done differently?

Not really, this team worked incredibly efficiently and removed all of the fat from the system, focusing on what actually matters. Their people skills are excellent. With both team members having credible backgrounds in TV media, they are excellent at taking complex topics and making them bitsize for the public in an engaging way.

Payper has featured articles very quickly with minimal involvement from me. They’ve published three articles within a week. As a result of their work, we’ve seen a notable improvement in my brand authority on the web and AI search. We’ve tracked rankings and AI search mentions.

Payper’s project management is very good and quick. We communicate with them through in-person meetings, virtual meetings, and emails or messaging apps.

Payper were well organised, fast, and genuinely great to deal with throughout the project. They’re a friendly team, easy to work with, and kept things moving without unnecessary friction.

Timelines were clear from the outset and key deliverables were met on schedule — especially important around launch where timing was critical.

They were responsive and proactive — quick to turn things around, open to feedback, and adaptable as priorities shifted. Communication was consistent, and they maintained strong momentum across the campaign.

What stood out most was how enjoyable and well-run the whole process was.

Lewis in particular made the project management seamless — clear, organised, and always on top of what needed to happen next. He kept things moving without overcomplicating anything, and made it easy for us to stay aligned throughout.

On top of that, the team were genuinely great to deal with — responsive, pragmatic, and just easy to work with. It made a typically stressful launch phase feel straightforward.
