What challenge were you trying to address with Origami Accounting?

Our company was based out of China, but we opened an office in Toronto.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Origami Accounting provides accounting services. They handle all of our finances on the global side; they file our GST and sales tax returns and do corporate taxes and financial reporting. The team uses QuickBooks as accounting software.

What is the team composition?

We work with Ashley (Staff Accountant) and Jillian (Manager).

How did you come to work with Origami Accounting?

I wasn’t the one that hired them. At the time, we had a managing director, and he found them. They worked with small businesses.

How much have you invested with them?

We pay $500 CAD (approximately $370 USD) a month.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in March 2020, and our relationship is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We don’t have to do any bookkeeping; we just upload all our invoices every month, and they handle it. Overall, they’ve saved us a lot of time.

How did Origami Accounting perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re easy to get a hold of. They have a platform where we upload everything, and we’re actually the ones that cause delays. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re very efficient; whenever we need something, they handle it. They also answer our questions promptly.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, they’re a good partner.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I highly recommend them if you want to save time on your bookkeeping and accounting, especially regarding taxes.

What challenge were you trying to address with Origami Accounting?

We wanted a reliable bookkeeping service that felt like they were in-house, without having to pay for a full-time member of the team.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They provide us with a full-time accountant who has full accessibility. We gave them access to financial software and set them up with our Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) information. Through a series of calls and emails, they requested all of the information they needed to get started. There is also a bookkeeper on hand who takes care of processing all of our receipts, updating our financial software and keeping the books clean. 

What is the team composition?

I work with two people from their team, the CPA and the bookkeeper. 

How did you come to work with Origami Accounting?

They did a direct mail piece and it was the best marketing I’d seen from an accounting firm and I appreciated that. Their pricing was also incredibly competitive, basically costing me no extra money for more services than I was receiving previously. 

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent probably around $25,000 over the years. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together around October 2016 and our engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

I really enjoy working with them. For the first time in our company’s history, there are clear financial statements. Everything is now up-to-date and our bookkeeping is much clearer. We’ve saved a huge amount of time and they’ve given us a lot of peace of mind. 

How did Origami Accounting perform from a project management standpoint?

It’s been a pretty seamless process. They have a flexible approach and work around the needs of our business. We mostly communicate through email and phone calls; I rarely ever need to meet in-person with them. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

The seamlessness of their approach for small businesses is impressive. The headache that finances can cause can be quite significant, and they’ve taken away the pain and made it easy.  They work with the idiosyncrasies of our business and learn how we operate. They’ve taken the time to get to know us on that level. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

I wanted better reporting, but their business model doesn’t really work that way. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Show up for your finances and be a part of that process; being on top of that is one of the most important things you can do. As much as Origami Accounting provides solutions, you should still know the numbers at the end of the day.
