Introduce your business and what you do there.
I am the founder and director of a digital marketing company. We specialize in website design and development, SEO, as well as other digital marketing services.
What challenge were you trying to address with Northants Accounting?
We were looking for someone to help us with accounting services. The first year that we ran the business, we had someone who wasn’t very efficient and we weren’t happy with their services.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Northants Accounting has provided us with payroll, financial planning, and general accounting services. They do our end of year tax returns and corporation tax calculations as well. When we have members of staff that are just working a few hours, the team calculates how much pay they will get.
They are always advising us on the most tax-efficient ways to make sure that we are saving money for the corporation tax at the end of each year, and they deal with the finances in a better way. We were using QuickBooks but have now switched to Xero.
What is the team composition?
We are in contact with Nishi (Managing Director), and I am also working with their payroll teammate. When we switched our account software, we worked with an additional person.
They always have a bookkeeper on hand who helps out when I have questions about posting payments or showing refunds. We are dealing with the whole company really, but each person has their own role which makes it work very smoothly.
How did you come to work with Northants Accounting?
My friend introduced me to Northants Accounting as he has been using them for a few years.
What is the status of this engagement?
The engagement began around June 2019, and we’re still working with them.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
I feel a lot more prepared and there are no surprises with the accounts where we suddenly have a bill. They tell us 12 months in advance of what our outgoings will be towards the government based on our current forecasts and predictions. It allows us to be prepared and to put money to one side for what we know is going to come up.
As a new business, we kind of knew roughly what to expect, but with our previous accountant, we were never given any estimates, budgets, or timeframes in which we should have the money prepared. We were never told when the VAT bill was due.
How did Northants Accounting perform from a project management standpoint?
Northants Accounting has been the complete opposite of our first accountant, and they are very proactive. They always keep in touch with what has been going on with COVID-19 and the changes in legislation.
We didn’t even need to ask them any questions because they were so proactive in sending out regular emails about what we were entitled to and what grants were available. We have always felt very connected with them. If I text them, I know they will come back to me with the answer in 20 minutes.
I have full confidence that I am being looked after and getting a real premium service. With the various ways we have to connect with them, we never feel that we are not being communicated to. Nishi comes in every quarter or so, sits with us for a half-day, and runs through a few bits with us as well.
There is a lot of peace of mind now, and we have full confidence. When we call them, there’s someone there to answer the phone. If they don’t know the answer, they pass us onto the person we need to speak to. They’re very organized, and they get results.
What did you find most impressive about them?
The main highlight of working with them is that our last accountant completely messed up our end of year for 2018/2019. Free of charge, Northants Accounting was able to fix all of the problems and run the end of year.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No, I have no suggestions. If I did have any issues, I would say it to them. They haven’t done anything wrong at all.
Northants Accounting is a proactive partner, helping the business prepare for tax season far in advance. They are clear about what needs to get done and when, making for a partnership that breeds confidence. The team has also been able to correct another vendor's mistakes free of charge.
