We don’t know who dreamed up the first cheese straw, but we do know when: Before refrigeration, Southern cooks would knead leftover breakfast biscuit dough with cheese and spices, roll out the dough, cut it into thin strips, and bake. “Waste not, want not,” was the motto. And, over generations, as recipes were shared and refined, what began as frugality became the fabulous hors d’oeuvre beloved by Southern hostesses and guests.

Our recipe for Traditional Cheddar Cheese Straws is the same heirloom recipe handed down to our Mom by her mother. The perfect combination of luscious aged cheddar cheese and fresh spices, these enticing straws taste like the ultimate indulgence, but there’s never any waste because every last crumb is sure to be savored.
