I'm the proprietor of CS Surbhi Associates, a corporate compliance firm that provides secretarial and legal compliance services to companies across their regulatory lifecycle.

What challenge were you trying to address with IPCOGITO LEGAL?

One of our clients was served a legal notice and faced an opposition to their trademark application. We needed counsel who could handle both the contentious and prosecution aspects of the matter without losing momentum.

What was the scope of their involvement?

IP Cogito Legal took over the matter end-to-end — drafting the reply to the legal notice, prosecuting the trademark application, and contesting the opposition. What stood out was their approach to the opposition itself: they conducted a detailed review of the opponent's own trademark filings and identified contradictory positions taken across those applications. That contradiction became a central argument in our favour, and it worked.

How did you come to work with IPCOGITO LEGAL?

We were referred to IP Cogito Legal. On fees, they were priced a step above the online legal service aggregators, but entirely in line with what an established law firm would charge — and given the quality and depth of work they delivered, it represented strong value for money. The level of research, the strategic approach to the opposition, and the overall handling of the matter made the fee look very reasonable in hindsight. Beyond cost, their firm's values aligned with ours, and they had clear, relevant expertise in exactly the kind of matter our client was facing — which ultimately mattered more than price. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from August 2023–November 2025.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The matter was genuinely contentious at the outset — there was real uncertainty about the outcome, and our client was concerned about losing a brand he had built his business around. What began as a heated dispute was ultimately resolved in our favour. The trademark was successfully registered, and our client can now operate freely under his mark without any legal cloud over it. That outcome, for a business owner who feared losing his brand entirely, was significant.

How did IPCOGITO LEGAL perform from a project management standpoint?

Their deadline management was sharp throughout — in trademark and opposition matters, missing a statutory deadline can be fatal to the case, and there was no instance where that was ever a concern. They were proactive in flagging upcoming timelines rather than waiting to be reminded. Communication was handled primarily over email and messaging platforms, which worked well given the nature of the matter. Responses were prompt, updates were given at each meaningful stage, and we were never left wondering where things stood. For a matter that ran across multiple proceedings — the legal notice, the application, and the opposition — that consistency in communication made coordination significantly easier on our end.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their drafting skills were very good. Every document they produced was clearly built from the ground up for this specific matter — there was no sense of recycled language or template-filling. The research that went into each submission was thorough, and it showed in the output. The opposition reply in particular demonstrated that they had gone well beyond the immediate record — analysing the opponent's own filing history and using inconsistencies within those applications as a substantive argument. That kind of strategic research-led drafting, rather than formulaic response work, was what set them apart.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Nothing material comes to mind. The matter was handled well across all fronts. If anything, a slightly more structured interim update — perhaps a brief summary at the close of each stage of proceedings — would be a useful addition for clients who are less familiar with how trademark litigation unfolds. But that is a minor observation, not a criticism of the work itself.
