Since 1977, Gateway has provided low-volatility equity strategies for risk-conscious investors. From the beginning, Gateway’s focus has been reducing the risk of equity investing with option strategies. Gateway’s index option-based, low-volatility equity strategies seek to capture the majority of the returns associated with equity market investments, while exposing investors to less risk.

While long-only equity strategies focus almost exclusively on investment returns, Gateway’s index option approach seeks to find an optimal balance between risk and return. Our low-volatility equity approach is built on the belief that generating cash flow – rather than seeking to predict variations in the prices of securities – can be a less risky way of participating in equity markets. This approach has historically helped to mitigate losses during periods of heightened equity market volatility.

Gateway has found that combining equity market exposure with cash flow from writing index options can deliver many of the long-term benefits of equity market investing with lower risk. Gateway has also found that hedging portfolios with the purchase of index put options has historically helped protect investors from a significant market decline over a short period of time.
