BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the general manager of a creative agency based in Nairobi, Kenya. We offer traditional and digital advertising services to clients. We handle creative design and digital marketing in-house, and we work with suppliers on photography, videography, and anything else that requires production.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Fat Rain Films?

We needed photography and video for digital content, either for launching new products or driving sales up.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We develop the storyline and scripts internally, and we pitch those out to various suppliers in our panel. Fat Rain Films handles storyboarding and production.

What is the team composition?

I work with three people from their team, including a producer, who’s in charge of the script and discusses all the details with me. Another member handles the work on the ground, and there’s another producer who handles postproduction.

How did you come to work with Fat Rain Films?

We typically pitch out 3–4 production houses, irrespective of the client. This is because each house has a different director, and each one can bring the content to life in a different manner. Fat Rain Films had a good cost, and I’d worked with them before and liked their work.

How much have you invested with them?

The cost per project is anything between $10,000–$150,000. There aren’t many commercials in Kenya going above that cost.

What is the status of this engagement?

I first worked with them around 2014, when I was with a different agency. We work on a project-by-project basis; we just shot a video with them one week ago.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We evaluate them based on how well they adhere to our requirements and the satisfaction of the client. Fat Rain Films is professional, knows what they’re doing, and is passionate about the work.

They can be a bit costly, relative to other production houses on the market. There’s an opportunity for them to grow if they start thinking not only about big productions but also small productions.

How did Fat Rain Films perform from a project management standpoint?

We mainly communicate via email and phone. I haven’t had any complaints in this area, and it’s not something I worry about. They’re effective in terms of communication. They’re clear in setting up project timelines and meeting them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re customer-focused. They take time to understand the client’s needs. They consider the client their key partner, which makes me comfortable when engaging in a project with them.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They should focus more on providing services for smaller productions, specifically for digital content.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I’d tell them to be clear on what output they want. That will allow both parties to progress faster. If the client isn’t afraid of asking questions, Fat Rain Films is happy to provide support.
