Please describe your company and your position there. TESCO is a British multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer and a Fortune Global 500 Company. I have been a Operational Community Manager for Central Europe, responsible for TESCO operations.
For what projects/services did your company hire ExplainVisually, and what were your goals?
For what projects/services did your company hire ExplainVisually? TESCO does a lot to avoid wasting food. But the awareness of our actions among employees and clients was pretty low. We wanted to raise it. And we had a lot to tell. Every month in Poland alone, it saves an average of over 200 tons of food from being wasted.
Over 270 shops in Poland donate food to Food Banks and Caritas Poland and 450 local charities. Thanks to this, over 450,000 meals can be prepared each month for the neediest. TESCO also works in three other ways. The first one is a standard price reduction for products with short shelf life.
The second is to give up the “two-for-one” promotion for vegetables and fruits so that customers do not buy more than they need. The third way is the “Perfectly, imperfect” product line.
These are vegetables and fruits like potatoes, apples, or carrots, which do not have a perfect shape but are just as tasty, juicy, and fresh. Thanks to this line, farmers and producers can sell chains of “Perfectly Imperfect” vegetables and fruits that would otherwise be rejected and wasted only because of their irregular shape.
How did you select ExplainVisually and what were the deciding factors?
How did you select ExplainVisually? We had worked with them before as they prepared for us an animation about TESCO Foundation.
Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.
As TESCO was closing their fish departments, it created some free space on shops’ walls. We painted the walls with chalkboard paint to use these spaces for communication with our clients. We asked ExplainVisually to analyze, synthesize, and visualize the key information about the actions we take to prevent food waste.
Based on their infographics, we asked them to prepare real hand drawings in one of our shops. As the feedback was excellent, we asked them to do it in the other 20 shops around Poland. The project went well and got a buy-in in our HQ in England.
So we decided to prepare projects also for Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. However, a new challenge emerged. In these countries, we needed bigger infographics – 15×3 meters and 30×3 meters. This would have meant a few days of work for the illustrator, and there was little time.
We decided to ask ExplainVisually to prepare a huge sticker based on the previous graphics. However, we wanted to keep the atmosphere of handwritten drawings, so we stayed with a simple form.
How many people from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
They had a project manager, designer, and multiple artists that hand-drawn our infographics.
Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success? The results of the pilotage were very encouraging. The reaction of the TESCO customers surprised us. People who came to do Sunday shopping stopped by the infographics, discussed food waste, and asked the staff for more details of the action, congratulating them on their current activities.
It not only increased the awareness and engagement of our clients but of our employees too. There were spots on the chalkboards where employees could insert information on how much this particular shop has saved food. They were very keen to keep it up to date and felt very proud that they can be a part of something bigger.
We have raised awareness among both clients and employees. Thanks to these projects and our other activities such as workshops and webinars about food waste - around 60-70% of food in Poland that is still in a condition good enough to be eaten are being shared, even despite the COVID.
There was also another perk, as this action opened HQ stakeholders for more outside-the-box actions like that.

I’ll just say that I’ve worked in TESCO for over 10 years, and they’re one of the two best suppliers I have worked with.

Their fantastic flexibility and ability to prepare great visual synthesis.

No idea. Maybe they should teach their clients more about what they do as some people think that they only do animations.

Carlsberg, is an international company producing beer. I am HSE Manager for Southern Europe and Baltics in Carlsberg.
For what projects/services did your company hire ExplainVisually?
We wanted to make our Health and Safety training more efficient and interesting. Many guests visits our factories and they need to be educated about what they can and can’t do. That’s very important because violating these rules can lead to accidents and even death. As we have “Zero accidents” policy, Health and Safety Education is very important to us. Our previous solution – presentations done by H&S specialists – were long and not very interesting, so the guests often were not following them carefully.
What were your goals for this project?
That’s why we asked ExplainVisually to provide videos that would explain the rules in an interesting and clear way so the guests can follow them and remember the most important points. Additionally save time for the face to face trainings

Other departments of Carlsberg Group has worked with ExplainVisually and recommended them to us.
Describe the video(s) and the process in detail.
They have analyzed our existing Health and Safety rules and reviewed pictures of our factories. They prepared the script and storyboard which has visualized different parts of our factory and our rules in practice. After that they prepared an animation. It has been very popular among the Group so we asked them to prepare - apart from the universal English version - customized Norwegian and Estonian versions.
What was your vendors' project management or feedback process?
I’ve worked with a project manager but as far as I know they have scriptwriters, storyboardist, illustators and video editors.
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
They have helped us to achieve two outcomes: 1) Save over 10 000 working hours of H&S Specialists. They have spent ca. 500 hours a year on these trainings across plants. As now we don’t need a designated H&S specialist to conduct these trainings anymore they can focus on more important projects. It translates to 70-100 thousands € in savings.
How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?
It was very good. They respond quickly and really understand what we have meant when we were giving them feedback on various stages.
What did you find most impressive about this company?
The most impressive thing was their ability to understand our complex H&S rules quickly and prepare a video that was super clear and interesting.

We hired the ExplainVisually to make a film promoting our strategic project - mBank Digital Transformation. We wanted to make this film in a different form than what we have been creating so far. We wanted it to stand out and be remembered. That's why we decided on a drawing form.

From my perspective, the main goal was to show how we approach to digitization in the bank and how people should pay attention to in their daily work and what to improve it. We would like to point out that digitization is inevitable in this day. Especially if we have a lot of paper and many systems.

We collected the expectations in a brief by e-mail. We contacted mainly by e-mail and by phone. We discussed and accepted individual parts of the work. We had a leader and a contact person on both sides. Contact was very easy and open. We worked without delay, very dynamically

Openness, great creativity, good atmosphere, lots of ideas and suggestions, and at the same time a structured brief and well-collected expectations.

First the agency run a workshop for top management and worked out the main theme of the strategy communication. We had a series of meetings with agency where we decided witch of their ideas we'd implement and when. Tohether we prepared a schedule of communication.
The agency also run a workshop for sales representatives where they developed the method of implementing the strategy in their work and also how to motivate their subordinates to work in accordance with the new strategy and organizational culture.

I've worked with the head of the firm as well as creatives and workshop facilitators (trainers).

The perception of the cultural organization among the employees and the client-cetricity approach boosted. We surveyed our employees before the communication and after the internal campaign and we achieved much better results.

We communicated regularly, with frequent updates on every running topic. We regularly updated our promotional schedule.

Ingka Global Business Operations (previously Group Shared Services) provides services within Finance, HR and Procurement area for IKEA companies all over the world, operating through 4 Hubs located in Poland, USA, China and India. ExplainVisually produced five movies, which were presented during internal Kickoff event for Ingka GSS co-workers in 2017. The event purpose was to celebrate new fiscal year (which at Ingka/IKEA starts in September), as well as launch and promote company's strategy for incoming 3 years.

How did you select ExplainVisually?
We chose ExplainVisually after meeting Klaudia T. (EV co-founder) in another event (organised by IKEA Retail company), where she was responsible for live graphic recording. Klaudia's outcome was very impressive, therefore we wanted to use her and her colleagues' skills to produce the material for us.

We had five videos, lasting 3-5 minutes, each of them presenting parts of Ingka GSS Strategy (referring to world around us, megatrends in finance environment, IKEA Group global strategy, needs of our business partners etc).
Together with my manager (GSS Manager) we prepared a written script, which was used to brief EV on our company specification. EV came back with a visuals' proposal. We had a few calls to verify the content together. After receiving the first versions of the videos, we had a chance to request small corrections. The whole process took ~1,5 month, was very efficient.
What was your vendors' project management or feedback process?
Maciej, EV contact person, who was fantastic support, open to all our feedbacks, offering good solutions, being very focused on deliver according to our needs.
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
The videos were appreciated by internal recipients, who could easily understand the goals and strategic objectives for incoming years. After the main event, we used the videos many times later (as internal communication materials).

We had a few Skype calls and were in touch via phone.
