I was an R&D team manager for an international telecommunications company. The company provides public telecommunications services to mass-market and business customers. During this project, I was responsible for designing and implementing accessibility solutions that made it easier for disabled and senior citizens to use telecommunications services.

Our idea was to create a solution for people with mental disabilities. For many of them, using the phone is a problem, so we wanted to make the process much simpler by introducing fun elements. So, there was an idea, but we needed help with the embedded experience.

Majook works with VoIP and PSTN technology, and the figures are equipped with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags, also included: microphone and speakers to facilitate conversation. Colorful figures placed on the board symbolize people from the user's environment - parents, guardians, friends. To each figure, you can assign any phone number. Calling the chosen person is very simple - place the associated figure in the appropriate field. An incoming call is signalled by a light blinking above the doll's head. The user can answer or reject the call by moving the figurine to the right field.

There was a team of 3 developers, an embedded systems engineer, a project manager, and a QA engineer.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

EMBIQ developed for us a prototype and made for us all the documentation need to production.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Our cooperation was very close, and they consulted with us at every stage of the project. We worked with the waterfall methodology under very tight deadlines on a tight schedule.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

First of all, we were very happy that they have embedded experience, an engineer from EMBIQ was a big help for us. Their developers are very creative, they think out of the box.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Well, nowadays, time changed so if it will be today we would choose different technology, modern and so on. Since then, many other technologies have been developed for positioning objects in space.

I was a CTO in a gaming and new media company in Poland. We were doing real-time add-ons to programs for the biggest TV stations in Poland.

The platform that we required was a completely new solution. We needed a company with strong R&D capabilities, with which we will define proper communication channels and behaviors of innovative mobile applications. The idea was to build one solution, that with small adjustments serve different types of TV programs. With Embiq - we did it.

We had a couple of vendors on our shortlist, but we've selected two for small, test projects, after recommendations from friends. In the end, we've stayed with Embiq.

Embiq developed native mobile applications for iOS and Android phones. In the begging, they also prepared J2M application, but with changes on the market, we've skipped supporting this platform after 2012.

During the development of the solution, we had a dedicated mobile team, with a designer, two developers per platform, and a QA. During the support period, we didn't have dedicated people, but I've never felt that this is a problem. All requests were estimated and delivered on time.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

This was an amazing project - the first real 2nd Screen in Europe. It was a breakthrough for our company. Platform prepared by Embiq brought a lot of money and contracts to my company for a couple of years.

As a source control, we've used bitbucket. For communication, we've used emails and g-talk. it was over 8 years ago, a bit different world than now. But still, even with much more primitive tools, we never had any problem with communication, feedback, and agreements.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The most impressive was the level of understanding our needs. We never had a need to reach to specific developers, manage the team or monitor the progress. Of course, we had this possibility, but the project was managed perfectly without our involvement.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Not really. As I remember the cooperation, I would not change a thing.

I wanted to build a solution that could keep our personal things safe. The project called Blueanker was based on beacons technology so I needed a software company that has experience with beacons. Our goal was to connect beacons with mobile devices.

Thanks to beacons, Blueanker allows you to keep control of your valuables and sends an alarm signal to smartphones with the appropriate app. Blueanker works with beacons, which are small transmitters using Bluetooth Low Energy technology. These devices communicate with smartphones equipped with appropriate applications and can, for example, inform us when we are out of range of the transmitter. In other words, beacons can alert us when someone steals our bike or equipment and wants to move away with it.

There were a few developers (Android, iOS) UI/IX Designer, Project Manager who was leading them. Also, what was important for me, I could talk about any ideas with EMBIQ CEO.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

It was a quite new solution. Thanks to BLE it was a possibility to build whole users web that could help if the f.e. bike was stolen. We have developed the project a few years ago but we can see that nowadays solutions based on BLE are more and more popular. Together we built an easy-to-use, intuitive, unique and comprehensive security system.

They work with one-week sprints so it was very easy to plan work with them. I was updated on what’s going on with the project, they were contacting me via emails and phone calls.

I was impressed by their knowledge and capability of changing my ideas into a real project.

This is a project dedicated to medical students, future specialists in the field of musculoskeletal healthcare. The app contains whole the knowledge needed for young doctors.

The app was designed for iOS and Android systems thanks to developers who worked with Angular and Django.

A team was managed by the Project Manager. The application was built by a backend developer, iOS developer, Android developer.

There is an available mobile app version in stores, students use this app to collect knowledge about medical cases. The app works offline what is helpful for medical employees, they do not need to connect, they have all the data in one place.

I know that developers are working in one-week sprints, so regularly we met on online meetings, we discussed the project. Contact with EMBIQ was easy and fast, I could call them or email any time.

They are very open to any suggestions, we could talk about changes. They can find solutions for every task we want to solve.

Difficult to say, the project is ended, everything was going well.

The main goal was firmware implementation. We wanted to create a product that could be used at home. It was a compact wireless device developed for mobile EEG measurements. We needed to build firmware that could be suitable for a special helmet and mobile application used to manage the recorder system

SOLUTION

How did you select EMBIQ and what were the deciding factors?

They have experience in healthcare IT solutions and IoT products, they quickly understood what we wanted to achieve with our project.

As we mentioned, the main goal for EMBIQ was to build firmware for the microcontrollers in the homeEEG module and create an interface for transferring the signal to the recording device. The firmware supports the communication protocol that is used by the device to communicate with the mobile application through Bluetooth, WiFi and a serial interface.

The WiFi and Bluetooth modules are built into the homeEEG. The main use of the mobile app in this kit is to turn the survey on and off - it acts as a remote control. The app connects directly to the HomeEEG device via Bluetooth. Once the connection is established, the user can send the command to start the study, and then once done, stop it.

From the application, the user can view the directory structure of the study results and download the study to their device. Additionally, the user can clear the memory of the Home EEG device by sending the command "clear all" from the application level.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The main project outcomes were the devices that help patients and/or doctors to measure EEG signals at home. Embiq built a complete homeEEG wireless monitoring system that works with dedicated helmet and electrode mounting system, the company also provided firmware and mobile application.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

We had a few meetings in the office, every change we discussed via e-mail or phone. Company provides feedback in time and any occuring problem is being solve almost at once.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

People from EMBIQ were a real help. They had their own ideas that were very useful for the whole project. They were sharing with us their knowledge and offering different solutions. It was a great pleasure working with the EMBIQ team, they were a professional company with a great client approach.

We needed to build a website with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines with job and education offers. We outsourced EMBIQ to create a whole solution - a platform that could be used by every inhabitant for looking for a job and find educational offers from all over the city. They redesigned the whole website and change its usage.

The website is easy to use and it is suitable for every inhabitant of our city. The website is an important element of a programme Better Job Now which get a prize called Inovation in the City i it is placed in the City Innovation base of the Polish Development Fund.

Every project is working and expanding. EMBIQ still supports our projects. Together we have created platforms like DSDi Flow, DSDi Serwis and DSDi Info, websites gards.pl and ecsystem.pl

We have friendly relations with the EMBIQ team. Our communication is very clear. Contact with them is simple, we can call them anytime we like (we are in the same country). Few times a year we meet in the office to talk about past and future work. Mostly we have planned calls and e-meetings.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company? They are very complex. It is very convenient for us that we haven’t to look for another company for each part of the project. They have knowledge in less popular areas what was needed in our project.

There is only one thing they can improve - to test more. We know they are providing manual and automated testing and we believe that it is better for the project when you are doing it more.

What is essential we wanted to create something for a foreign market. Thanks to EMBIQ experience and knowledge, we achieved what we wanted. We created a platform and mobile apps that are available in the foreign market.

They were very responsive; communication was evident for both sides. We were working together through Microsoft Teams. We have planned some calls, but we can write to them anytime we liked what is essential.

I haven't known them before, and they seemed to be professionals. They helped with some decisions, I could use their knowledge.

The thing that could be improved is the number of team members - we were missing a bigger team. Maybe if there were more people, the project could be ready a little faster.

We got what we needed, during the project we can all the time ask about something, put some changes.
