World Development Report 2020: Development through GVCs and trade
After 1990, global value chains (GVCs) powered the surge of international trade and now account for almost half of all trade. This shift enabled an unprecedented economic convergence: poor countries grew rapidly and began to catch up with richer countries. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, however, the growth of trade has been sluggish and the expansion of GVCs has stalled. The report examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.
We created a presentation based on the report by using the same vibrant colors to complement and highlight its narrative and infused animation and visual graphics to keep a potentially heavy subject easy to digest.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m a research manager for the trade and international integration department of World Bank.
What challenge were you trying to address with Designed for Humans?
We needed to have some data visualization done.
What was the scope of their involvement?
We gave Designed for Humans the data and visualization that was done by researchers in Excel and PowerPoint. Our teams then discussed expectations and what we were looking for. They created 2–3 alternative visualizations of the data for us to consider.
Their team also designed templates for presentations. The templates were aligned with the publisher’s design for the book, using the same color palette, etc. to create a brand. Designed for Humans created a more elegant version that’d be a standardized presentation, not requiring change very often.
They also did a version in PowerPoint that allowed us to change data, such as location, as needed. Their team helped us produce presentations for several dissemination events.
What is the team composition?
We worked directly with Patrick (Founder).
How did you come to work with Designed for Humans?
We had worked with Patrick on and off since 2013 and were happy with his work.
How much have you invested with them?
We invested roughly $20,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
We worked on this project from July 2019–June 2020.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Patrick is always improving skills and offering customized ideas for our projects. He brings content together in a way that’s understandable and appealing to the audience. We’ve built a strong corporate identity and are very satisfied with the partnership.
How did Designed for Humans perform from a project management standpoint?
The project management reflected Patrick’s style, which has evolved over time. He’s very responsive and works closely with us to find the right solutions.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Patrick has great design abilities, bringing focus to fundamental elements and communicating well with the public. He has helped make us visible in the media wherever we launch.
Are there any areas they could improve?
There are times when some of the details, such as numbers, could be larger in efforts to be seen better.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Be open-minded. Listen to their ideas and interpretation of what is needed. You may be surprised at the results.
The partner has felt more media visibility as a result of the deliverables. Designed for Humans produces designs that are understandable and visually appealing. They provide customized ideas and consistently improve their skills. Responsiveness and attentiveness are hallmarks of their work.
