Mobile App Dev for Memory Enhancement Startup
“What they’re doing is unethical and unprofessional.”
the reviewer
the review
A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the CEO of Knew Memories. It’s a memory enhancement tool developed specifically for Alzheimer’s patients as well as people with dementia, stroke, and brain injury. I’m a developer, and I wrote the mobile app.
It’s come about through personal experience. My mother had Alzheimer’s and my father had a brain injury that led to dementia. During my time of caring for my parents, they experienced multiple doctors, and my mother was taking 25 different medications at one time. The problem with healthcare in the US is that one doctor doesn’t know what the other is doing. There’s no national database or network where they could log treatments. It’s up to the patient to tell the doctor what doctors they’ve had and what medications they’re on. In 2017, 250,000 Americans were killed because of medical errors.
In August 2020, I developed a tracking system. I used to work for a pharmaceutical company so I know about viruses and saw the need for such a system. Nothing’s been done on my app since December 2019. I had five product managers because they all kept leaving the company, and I had to restart over and over again. I’m 70 years old, and I’m doing this all on my own using my retirement funds.
What challenge were you trying to address with Cubix?
I went to them to develop my app for Android and iOS.
What was the scope of their involvement?
I signed a contract with Cubix in September 2018. It stipulated a 4–6-month completion, but now it’s almost three years later. I’ve had two and a half years of just waiting, and I’ve asked them to contact me. In the last conversation they had with me, they said they’d put the app on GitHub and release the credentials for my website, but they haven’t done either. I haven’t been responded to since September 2020. I paid for services up front, which they haven’t done or reimbursed me for.
A large amount of employee turnover is a red flag that there’s something wrong. Over two years, I’ve had six product managers who have had to start all over again. They were all very nice and courteous, but there was no competency. The product managers promised they would do things, but they wouldn’t in the end.
Every time I got the app, there was something new added that I had no idea about and didn’t relate to the app. I gave Cubix forms that I created for the app, forms that they never instituted. The application is nowhere near what I want it to be two years later. I’ve rewritten the sections over and over again, but it never made it in. I basically have nothing.
I took out trademarks because I had signed a contract thinking it would be over and done in six months. It’s two years later now, and I’m on the fifth extension for my trademark. If I don’t get the app developed in the US, where I can see things and get it completed to where it needs to be, I’m out of luck. About 85% of my retirement funds have gone into this project.
Cubix hasn’t provided anything at this point. I paid for website design services. It ended up that one of the product managers took a vacation. I needed the site up, so I designed it myself. They haven’t reimbursed me for that.
What is the team dynamic?
There have been six product managers. They might have also done the development, but I’m not positive.
How did you come to work with Cubix?
I saw their web page, and they sounded good. I checked with the Better Business Bureau, and there were no complaints. Cubix gave me references, which I did call. I did my due diligence. The original salesperson was wonderful. They were all nice people, but I don’t know whether or not that was a way of putting me off.
How much have you invested with them?
The contract was for four payments of $10,500 each, out of which I paid $31,500. The salesperson said that they wanted to receive full payment before the app was launched but I’m not giving full payment on anything before I see the app. Cubix agreed to postpone the last payment, which would be $10,800.
I have paid them $1,700 and $1,500 for videos that I never received, and I was never reimbursed for the web page I designed myself. I took out two other addons that I paid $1,000 each for. They were for medical and hospital quoting, and they were never done.
Also, Cubix had a problem with money being supposedly stolen from them by someone in the US. I was asked to get their money back from this person, which cost me money for lawyers. I was trying to help out.
What is the status of this engagement?
I started working with Cubix in September 2018. My fifth product manager told me he was leaving the company in September 2020, and I told him I was stopping the project. They said they’d put everything on GitHub and give me the credentials. However, they haven’t responded to any of my numerous letters or returned my phone calls. I’m writing my congressman now.
Describe the impact this engagement has had on your business.
It’s been a nightmare. All I know is that it’s going to be three years in September 2021, and I have nothing. I don’t know if I’m receiving this poor service because I’m not a big company or something else, and I really don’t care at this point. It’s unprofessional.
It was all a mistake. I found out that each programmer has their own coding style when they enter. Therefore, bringing the app to the US would be very difficult to know what it was about because there were five different people working on it with their own coding shorthand. I’d have to start all over again.
In September 2020, when the fifth project manager was leaving the company, he told me that the app hadn’t been worked on since December 2019. I hit the roof. They had a complete memo of every form I’d made, and nothing had been done. At this time, they said that if I paid and continued with them, they’d get it done in three weeks. By this point, I didn’t believe anything they were saying.
Cubix won’t give me the credentials of the web page so that I can transfer it over to GoDaddy. The web page has been down for I don’t know how long. I demanded my money back for the things they didn’t do. They said they’d put the deliverables on GitHub, but they didn’t. I haven’t hired a new resource as of yet. I’m out of money, and I’d need the app to get a price on what I could do.
How was project management handled?
Every time I received a new product manager, they said they had all the information, but it never got there. Things started going downhill before COVID-19. It took almost two months to get the new product manager up to speed on the forms. I had to send the same memo over and over again, and it never got done.
I had a draft of the app, but that’s gone. They changed the password for the one I do have, so I can’t get into it. Not only that, I had a lot of trouble getting the app on my system because they never told me the passwords they changed. With the time difference between here and Pakistan, it was difficult to communicate.
Is there anything that the vendor did well or that you would consider a strength?
No, there isn’t anything they did well or that I’d consider a strength. My niche audience is people with cognitive issues so I knew I had to keep the app simple. Cubix wanted to put in all these fancy bells and whistles, and I kept saying no. The big problem was communication. I wrote things down and gave them exact forms to put on the app, but they never did.
In what specific areas can they improve?
They need to improve their communication. I’m a writer, not a developer. I told each of my product managers that if there’s something that I ask, please tell me about expectations. My 30-second ask could cost them a month of work because I don’t know what it takes.
What advice do you have for clients with similar needs to yours?
My advice is to not use Cubix. What they’re doing is unethical and unprofessional. I’m not a vengeful person, but I’m going to make sure that Cubix doesn’t have a presence in the US. I don’t want this happening to anyone else. I’m 70 years old, so I can’t just get a job to recoup this money.
They’re denying any culpability. I didn’t do anything to make six of their people leave in two years. That’s an indication that there’s something wrong with the company. Then, I was told that someone took off with all their money, and there was one problem after another. I don’t know what more I can say, except that this has been a horrible situation. I’m a reasonable and kind person, but my tolerance has a limit.

Please describe your company and your position there.
I am the founder of a new startup
For what projects/services did your company hire Cubix?
I hired Cubix for development of a native iOS and Android application
What were your goals for this project?
To outsource the development of my project to a talented tech team.
How did you select Cubix?
I interviewed several companies. While Cubix was not necessarily the cheapest option, they were definitely the most buttoned up and I felt extreme confidence that they were going to nail the project. That is why I decided to move forward with them.
Describe the project in detail.
The project consists of the development of a native iOS and Android application. The project is confidential, so unfortunately I can't go in to too much detail, but it was rather complex.
What was the team composition?
The team starts with a project manager and consists of several talented developers, QA, and so much more.
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
Cubix haș done an excellent job, creating not just a functional application, but a beautiful one. We still have some ways to go, but so far Cubix has exceeded my expectations.
They are an absolute awesome partner that works around the clock (literally) to ensure my business is successful.
How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?
The workflow between my team and theirs has been great. As soon as we got past the initial honeymoon phase and figured out how each person works, we've had great communication.
Adeel in particular has done an excellent job communicating back and forth between me and their team, knowing that I don't have a tech background. He's there when I need him and has been an absolute awesome partner!
What did you find most impressive about this company?
Their broad range of knowledge. They always find a way to figure something out, even when it's new territory for them.
Are there any areas for improvement?
As a spastic entrepreneur, I always like for things to happen yesterday.
With that being said, though we did get a bit off track on the timeline, the team has done an amazing job acknowledging the issue and has done everything in their power to shave off time and even bring in additional resources to ensure the project is completed as quickly as possible.

“You won’t have any regrets working with them. They were fantastic — always spot-on and responsive.”

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the division chief of critical care analytics at EMSA. We provide oversight for the paramedics, EMTs, and firefighters in both metropolitan and suburban locations across Tulsa and Oklahoma City.
What challenge were you trying to address with Cubix?
We were looking to create a set of native apps that gave paramedics, EMTs, and firefighters access to local protocols. This would allow them to stay up to date on policies and procedures without having to constantly print out new documents. In addition, we needed the app to interact with our website so that we could simultaneously post updates across both our site and apps.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Cubix guided us through the process of creating native iOS and Android apps that integrated with our emergency medical services (EMS) system. We had a general idea of how we wanted the solution to function but were novices when it came to development. That's where Cubix came in with their product knowledge — they suggested more efficient functions that were better than what we had in mind and walked us through what we needed to do.
They also proposed features that we hadn’t even thought of. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the complete budget needed to build all of them out because we're a nonprofit, so they prioritized components that would give our medics the best value. After they laid out the project scope, they completed the rollout within 90 days.
What is the team composition?
I worked with two project managers. The first had to step away for personal reasons, so they transitioned us to our second manager almost seamlessly. We also had scheduled calls with a couple of their developers — just so I had a bit more detail about the specifics of the app and how it would function.
How did you come to work with Cubix?
It was through an RFP process. We put out feelers through LinkedIn and other platforms to gauge interest. Compared to the other proposals we’d received, Cubix’s was by far the most economical, the best valued, and the best laid out.
How much have you invested with them?
We spent about $35,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
The project lasted from June–August 2017.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Cubix's solution has become a real investment for our EMS system. So far, there have been no functionality issues whatsoever, and we’re now able to flawlessly communicate protocol changes and additions to our medics. That’s thousands of documents per year in policy and procedural updates, which has increased in the wake of COVID-19.
For context, we have over 4,500 providers in our EMS system with reoccurring academies for the fire departments, transportation agencies, and more. Between Tulsa and Oklahoma City, we probably have an additional 200–300 downloads annually. It’s been wonderful to be able to reach them all without losing anything in translation.
How did Cubix perform from a project management standpoint?
We had weekly meetings with the project manager. Some of their developers would also come to the table to discuss certain aspects of the project. If they had a question that I needed to run through, they’d contact me directly. Beyond that, they provided PDF files of the scope and did virtual presentations with us.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Cubix was very responsive and knowledgeable. I told them from the beginning not to treat me as if I knew everything. I wanted them to tell me what I needed to hear and be upfront with their recommendations because this was an app that would serve over 4,000 EMS providers during emergency situations. If they thought of a more efficient user flow, they needed to tell me — and they did just that.
On top of that, they had excellent customer service. Their follow-up was great whenever I had questions, and we also utilized them to work on our website.
Are there any areas they could improve?
If anything, I’d encourage them to work on a transition process or contingency plan in case a resource needed to drop off a project. There were a couple of items that fell through the crack when we were transitioning between project managers, and we had to recover them. However, I understood that it was due to a personal emergency, so it was an acceptable situation.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
If you’re looking for a company to help you invest in your future infrastructure, you should give Cubix a call. You won’t have any regrets working with them. They were fantastic — always spot-on and responsive.

Mobile App Dev, Design, Logo Creation for Grocery App
"Communication is superior, and a key characteristic of their team."
the reviewer
the review
A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
We’re a company that was creating a mobile grocery app. I’m the creator of the company.
What challenge were you trying to address with Cubix?
They’re providing a mobile app solution that’s different than anything currently in the market.
What was the scope of their involvement?
They’re supplying logos, designs, and development for our proprietary grocery app. The final solution will be available for both iOS and Android.
What is the team composition?
I work with Adeel (COO), and he’s overseeing the entire project. There’s a team of six employees working behind the scenes.
How did you come to work with Cubix?
I found them on Clutch. Most of the other agencies I reached out to were not as responsive as Cubix. I was shocked that I had trouble getting responses from others, but their communication was strong from the beginning. That encouraged me to hire them and was one of the best parts of bringing them onto the project.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent $78,000 to date. The entire project will cost us $86,000 in the end. Payments were made after they completed a certain phase of the app, which worked smoothly.
What is the status of this engagement?
We’ve worked with them since September 2020. They are intending the complete the project by March 2021.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
I’m very satisfied with their work so far. They’re great with communication and answering any questions we have. We ran into some hurdles that delayed the project a little bit. They were able to diagnose the problem and help us temporarily switch gears to a more manual process rather than an automatic one. I was very happy with how they worked through that problem.
How did Cubix perform from a project management standpoint?
Most of my communication goes through Adeel, and he coordinates with the rest of his team. If I have direct questions for them, they can address that too. We’re communicating on Slack and Zoom. Whenever I reach out to them, they get back to me within about 10 minutes. They managed each phase of the project well and each team member thoroughly understood their place in the development process, whether it was the logo, design, or build.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Communication is superior, and a key characteristic of their team. They quickly answer our questions and always get back to us. There hasn’t been a single communication-related frustration over the course of our entire relationship. Their communication skills really pushed the project forward.
Are there any areas they could improve?
Nothing comes to mind.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Communication is key with them. The more detail you can give, the more explanation and clear planning you’ll receive back. If you have everything ready for them, they’ll be responsive and answer questions to the best of their knowledge. That’s what I did, and we’ve been very satisfied. Their team is there to listen in jump straight into the project with you.

Please describe your company and your position there.
I'm an english-Indonesian interpreter at Insvire technologies, a technology based start up in Indonesia. I was assigned a project to develop anonymous social media but since I had a little knowledge of app development I searched for vendors until I met Cubix.
For what projects/services did your company hire Cubix?
In 2017 I started developing an anonymous social media app with a developer based in Melbourne, but the project has to stop for they went into liquidation by the end of 2018. So I decided to look for the other vendor to continue the project. In 2019 I contacted Cubix to handle the project, we start everything all over again from scratch and hoping it is ready to launch in 2021.
What were your goals for this project?
My goal is to develop an anonymous app that is secure, interesting and sustainable so the youth can express their thought and moments through contents without fear of being judge. We also want to see our mobile app engagement and downloads is continually raising by the end of this year. we also need the mobile app to be easy to update on our end, so we were interested in simple, user friendly platform.
How did you select Cubix?
My team searched online for app developers and compiled a list of 5 based on the case studies on their websites. we contacted each company and narrowed it down to 2 after receiving their initial pitches.
It was a hard decision, but we selected this vendor based on the quality of their final proposal, their willingness to train our team on how to interact with the app post-launch, and their price point, which we felt was very fair, turned out Cubix passed our criteria after considering the price, developments stages, portfolios and technology they use.
Describe the project in detail.
Once we selected Cubix, we had a series of discovery meetings to discuss our goals and objectives. Within the first two weeks, we send cubix mockups and designs for the iOS and Android apps. The Cubix came back to us with wireframes and concepts for our other sections in the app.
What was the team composition?
initially I was assigned a project manager to support and serve as the main point of contract throughout the project. I only spoke with our project manager, but I was made aware that there were other developers, as well as a QA resource working behind the scenes.
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
So far we're satisfied with the app, we're still preparing for the official launch and hopefully, we can hear positive feedback on the usability, flow, and look of the app both from potential customers.
How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?
the project manager that I was assigned was easy to communicate with provided us frequent updates. we connected over skype whenever there's updates or new queries. overall I was impressed by the timelines of the team. During the development, I had some time to pause the development for one and many reasons but Cubix is always welcome to continue.
What did you find most impressive about this company?
i was blown away by the knowledge that this vendor had about mobile app development, UI/UX, and optimization. We learned so much more than we thought possible, and we appreciated that they were really patient and thoughtful while we came to speed and pause for a long time.
We used to work with the other web developer, but this was such a collaborative and positive experience. I would certainly engage with this company again for any mobile app needs that we have in the future.
Are there any areas for improvement?
everything can always be done faster, but we were very satisfied with their work. in the end, quality is more important than speed and we ended up with a beautiful product.

we had daily standup calls for about 30 mins in which we would go over the roadmap of what was priority and necessary in the upcoming releases. in parallel we would discuss bugs, server configuration, app designs and development strategy to ensure we were understanding of all scopes of the project and what we need to do to meet our deadlines.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?
we started our venture and Boodle was the first rewards app to show proof of concept in its MVP state.
the app performed well and the team adjusted to make critical integrations including tracking, segmentation, CMS capability and optimizing the way we served offers in the app to our consumers.
there were several times where we crept features into a sprint and cubix adjusted to get newly introduced tasks done before the deadline.

the PM was very hands on, reactive and proactive when necessary and was always willing to gather up all troops for quick meetings and clarity on any feature we were building.
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
the company is in karachi pakistan and in that region there were monsoons, covid-19 and other disasters where the people of the city faced many out of work obstacles.
The team was always willing to stay late, come in early and make time for us even with these obstacles and the time difference. they were available and always remained focused no matter any adjustments that were made.
Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?
Sometimes we would try to fit a lot of features in one update and instead of finishing features we would split them into separate updates.
So when they noticed that there may not be enough time to finish the entire project, they had solutions to come up with releasing features in phase 1 and phase 2 which helped to rollout parts of the feature in phases,.
