I’m the CEO of an advanced materials company located in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

What challenge were you trying to address with Cox & Palmer?

I was trying to incorporate my startup. Basically, we hired Cox & Palmer to help us with all the initial legal work involved with initializing our company.

What was the scope of their involvement?

A member of their team walked me through the steps of initializing the company. We also discussed the cost ahead of time. From there, Cox & Palmer provided a startup package level of work, which involved starting up the company and giving me all my incorporation documents.

What is the team composition?

We mostly worked with one person, but that person was supported by other team members from Cox & Palmer.

How did you come to work with Cox & Palmer?

They were the only firm regionally that was advertising towards startups. As a result, it made sense to work with them because they were already used to doing what we needed.

How much have you invested with them?

We invested over $30,000 CAD (approximately $23,600 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked with them from February 2018–October 2019.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We didn’t really measure their project success. However, their work in incorporating the company stood the test of time and to subsequent financing rounds. They did quite a good job of setting up everything we needed so we didn’t have to return back to get things sorted out.

How did Cox & Palmer perform from a project management standpoint?

Our communication was only through email and phone calls, and we didn’t use any tools for the project.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They offered a very good startup package, and they offered reasonable costs for their services. In fact, I recommended their startup package to people, especially to those who wanted to incorporate their company and set up their share structure.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Based on my experience, they could help founders set up a little bit better. Other than that, they had a good program, and they got the job done.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I’d recommend people to work with Cox & Palmer if they need the startup package. Beyond that, I’d suggest they look for another legal firm.
