BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the design manager for Spectrum Brands, Inc. I’m responsible for color, materials, and finish for the home and personal care division.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Concepto Studios?

We needed product design work and prototypes made.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They have done many different projects, including prototypes and product design for small appliances, personal care items, and more. 

For bigger projects, they have built complete platforms of products. Sometimes they build a core prototype with interchangeable pieces. They do sketches and 3D drafting, UI explorations, and more. They’re involved in nearly every project in our portfolio.

What is the team composition?

I have one main contact but have interacted with four people overall. 

How did you come to work with Concepto Studios?

We started with smaller projects like 3D drafting, and over time, it grew into prototypes and large projects. They have a good background in small appliances, manufacturing, and plastics. 

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve invested over a million dollars. They receive most, if not all, of our yearly design budget. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together around December 2008, and the engagement is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The quality of their prototypes is so good that sometimes it looks better than our production item. When we have shown the prototypes to different people, they usually think they’re real. I’m very pleased with the work they do, and the timely manner in which they do it.

How did Concepto Studios perform from a project management standpoint?

They do a good job. Whenever I need anything, they’re available and responsive. They always meet deadlines. If there is a timing problem, it is on my end, or with shipping, etc. We share files, using Dropbox, and communicate via email, phone, and text.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They produce a high-quality product at competitive prices, and they have great timing. They feel like an extension of our team. Their customer service is always excellent, and they’re very reliable.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be clear about your expectations. Once they understand what you want, they will rock it.
