We outsourced Code B as an external support to help us build an initial MVP platform. This was our first project wherein we were approached by our client with a need to include development as an initial step for their business growth plan that we had in the pipeline. Code B had two developers assigned to co-ordinate with me and the client team. So far , they have been realistice with their development timelines and have also made sure to cater to our timelines as well. Their development part of the project is up to the mark , the management is patient , understanding and reliable.

I'm the co-owner and CTO of Penrose Gaming, a content provider to telecommunication companies in Africa and the Middle East.

We required a set of specific technologies in the gaming space, which CODE B was able to provide.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?
We've worked with CODE B on multiple development projects, including our first project, which is now complete. For that project, CODE B was required to develop a casual game using PixiJS, Vue.js, and web canvas elements. The outcome was a game called Mega Match Robbers. This game also required a socket-based connectivity architecture.

Currently, CODE B is working on a new project, which I can't disclose yet. CODE B hasn't been in charge of the designs. We have an in-house design team, so we've provided them with the design assets required for our projects.

What is the team composition?
We work with five team members of CODE B, including Riddhesh (Software Architect & Founder) and four software developers of different expertise. Still, I know that there's a much bigger team working behind them.

How did you come to work with CODE B?
We hired them based on an interview. After researching different companies, we traveled from South Africa to India to have a face-to-face meeting with Riddhesh and CODE B, which went very well. We were able to validate that they were capable of meeting the project's technical requirements. After that, we signed a formal contract.

What is the status of this engagement?
We started working together in August 2023, and our engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
The first game has just recently been launched, so we don't have any metrics or statistics yet. Still, I would give CODE B's work almost perfect ratings.

How did CODE B perform from a project management standpoint?
CODE B is very good at communicating, delivering on time, and sticking to our budget. We use Slack for direct communication, WhatsApp for urgent communication, and Google Meet to host our formal meetings.

Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?
I would like to give a shout-out to Riddhesh.

What did you find most impressive about them?
CODE B's independence (in a lot of ways) is their most impressive asset. We don't need to hold their hand a lot, and along the way, we've allowed them free rein. Still, that free rein has been earned based on our interactions with them and what they've produced using the information provided without asking more questions. An inexperienced partner would have asked much more questions.

Are there any areas they could improve?
During the demo phases, CODE B could have ironed out a few of the known issues with the product. However, their turnaround time has been really good, compensating those issues in a way.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?
Go ahead and work with them. In my experience, they're one of the best development companies I've worked with.

We hired CODE B to architect and build our SaaS platform from scratch.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

I wanted to realize the cost savings of an offshore vendor, but it was important to have one who could provide advice on cloud architecture and to work effectively with complex, high-level requirements.

Meahana is a complex web application with separate interfaces for administrators, content authors, session facilitators, and session participants, with the session components having real time sync across users. Additionally, there is a CLI for 3rd party developers to add new interactions to the platform. CODE B helped to design a robust, scalable AWS architecture using MongoDB Atlas, Node.js, Fargate, Redis, Cognito, WebSockets, and a Svelte front-end.

The team had reference to an application prototype to understand desired early functionality and progressed very quickly to build out our MVP. The team was always proactive in suggesting better ways to implement features to increase performance and scalability and was great at maintaining momentum even when requirements were shifting.

We have had a team of 2 dedicated senior developers and a part time UX designer. Other staff have contributed as needed when specific expertise was needed, for example our WebSocket architecture and doing load testing.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We launched our MVP with our alpha customers only 4 months after kicking off with CODE B and have received fantastic feedback. We are now expanding our team for our next round of development and plan to continue with CODE B as our permanent development partner.

We had daily stand up meetings via Zoom and used Slack extensively. The team was always prompt and responsive.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They have strong expertise in the latest technologies and provide excellent guidance in using them effectively. All team members have really taken the time to understand our product and goals and proactively work with us to make it better.

I’m the senior product manager for Chingari, a short video application. TikTok was banned in India during the COVID-19 pandemic, so Chingari got really popular. We’re now one of the leading social media apps in India and neighboring countries, such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Southeast Asia. I look after all product development.

What challenge were you trying to address with CODE B?

When we started, we had 1–2 Android developers, a few iOS developers, and 1–2 backend developers. We didn’t have an in-house team for web development, so we needed to hire someone.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

CODE B works closely with our team, collaborating to create many features. They’ve taken care of all the web development for our app and created an admin panel for our video moderators.

When we started, we didn’t have the bandwidth to document everything and do all the builds by the process. We initially outlined the specific requirements without getting into much detail. As a startup, we couldn’t afford to lose time and make the process slower, so CODE B had some basic requirements, designs, and architectures. From there, they handled the development work and some functional testing after the development.

The team has worked on 4–5 major items. One of them is our website, which serves as our digital marketing tool and acts as a landing page for our users. CODE B handles any new feature we release, any landing page we create for new offers, or any launch inside the application. They also do these on the web because they can be removed and edited easily.

Since we’re a short video app, we have to moderate all the videos because some content isn’t allowed. The admin panel is for our 20–30 moderators to perform certain actions to restrict users or videos.

In late 2021, we moved to crypto and Web3, and CODE B took care of all the blockchain and crypto-related developments for the backend site and website. They’ve worked on the blockchain part for more than one and a half years, and we’ve provided all the development requirements.

The backend is mostly in Node.js. CODE B also uses Python, Web3, and JavaScript as technologies.

When we started, we had about 6–7 developers working with us. At this point, we have around 15 teammates from CODE B working on our products.

We found them on Upwork.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in August 2019, and our collaboration is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We’re still working with CODE B because the software they’ve created is really scalable and easy to maintain. We love working with them; even though we’re extending our Android and iOS teams, we haven’t made an in-house frontend development team because we’re so satisfied with CODE B’s performance.

We released a product a year ago on February 2022. The solution was one of a kind within the ecosystem, so we onboarded around 2.3 million users to crypto. All these users are from tier-two and tier-three cities in India, so it was a remarkable achievement. Additionally, we didn’t face any issues with this product throughout the year.

Apart from that, we usually get high traffic on our website, which is around 200,000–250,000 daily visits. We also have over 170 million app downloads on the Google Play Store and App Store combined.

How did CODE B perform from a project management standpoint?

We use Jira for internal management, and they use the same tool. We create tickets, assign the items and deadlines they have to meet, and then CODE B updates or comments on the tickets. We also have an internal Scrum master to handle all of this.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We have an excellent relationship with CODE B and are highly impressed with their development abilities and delivery. Working with a startup is challenging because you launch quickly and get a lot of bugs. However, CODE B’s specialty is handling product launches and fixing bugs swiftly.

Overall, CODE B launches the products quickly, and their solutions have excellent architecture and are scalable.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They could have more designers on their team or incorporate a project manager so their developers can use their time more efficiently instead of spending so much time on calls. The point of contact could share all the information and timelines with them; although one of their team leaders handles that pretty well.

What challenge were you trying to address with CODE B?

We needed to improve our platform's speed, security, and coding practices. Additionally, we needed help with database issues we were facing.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

CODE B provides custom software development for us. They’ve worked on three pieces: our website, admin panel, and portal. They’ve fixed issues on each of these platforms. The team has helped us with database optimization by moving us to MongoDB Atlas; they’ve done the entire migration of our database. They’ve also moved us from GitLab to GitHub to improve our pipeline. 

Previously, our platform didn’t have an architecture; it was purely on AWS. CODE B changed our infrastructure from Amazon EC2 to Amazon ECS to improve our speed and access and ensure uptime. They’ve changed a lot of code that was improperly documented. The team has also integrated the platform with our CRM and implemented Cashfree as our payment gateway. Currently, they provide website maintenance.

I’m the co-founder of a consumer survey app business. We help brands and large companies conduct market research and find an audience, and we have several apps out there where users can take surveys and make money.

In particular, we’re working on launching two new applications for iOS and Android.

What challenge were you trying to address with CODE B?

We initially reached out to them because we lost one of our technical team members and needed someone to step up and cover the technical side quickly. Then, we worked with them to develop a secondary application.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

CODE B works with us on application development. First, they did maintenance and feature updates on our existing application for iOS and Android. Then, we worked with them to create a new survey application based on iOS and Android. Additionally, they helped us do a little bit of work on the website.

The new app launched about two months ago, but we went through development for a while. We initially consulted with them; they took a comprehensive approach and walked us through the services they could offer. Then, we discussed the problems and areas that needed improvement to define what we were looking for.

We saw a designer on our side to develop the screens for the mobile app, but we worked with two developers from CODE B to deliver the product. They did everything aside from design.

They primarily built the app using React and created an admin portal to manage our users and troubleshoot issues. CODE B helped us build out any type of tool we needed and get our analytics in place. They were also valuable at providing advice on what other potential things we should be on the lookout for and how we might want to prioritize different pieces.

Finally, there are ongoing improvements and maintenance work. We meet less with the team, but we’ve recently started to see them more because we’ll launch another app with CODE B.

We primarily work with Riddesh (Founder), who is our architect, a software engineer, and a developer, so three people in total. Every once in a while, we interact with one of their in-house testers, but they’re not involved in the project.

How did you come to work with CODE B?

We found them online and through talking with friends — it may have been through LinkedIn, but I don’t remember. We were evaluating several different services, looking at people on Upwork and other sites.

CODE B stood out to us because they took a comprehensive approach and had multiple people at the organization who could support us. We wanted to work with someone that could build a long-term relationship with us, not just some freelancer who could be with us one month and then switch gears to work with another customer.

Also, Riddesh’s architecture background and multiple developers in their team gave us confidence in working with CODE B.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in May 2021, and our relationship is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

For the apps that we’ve released with them, we’ve mainly measured success by the timelines — when we could have the testable version, the live version, and when we could be bug-free. My partner and I would use the app and then publicly release it without any bugs or issues. On the other hand, we didn’t set goals in terms of users or metrics, but we’ve trended very well so far.

Moreover, we’re very happy with their service. We’re preparing our documentation for a third app.

How did CODE B perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re great. CODE B is very flexible, so it depends on how the client wants to manage the relationship. They’re very proactive; if someone takes off a day, the team makes sure they’re staffed appropriately. For example, our initial developer was going away on an extended honeymoon, so we got another developer to swap, and the onboarding process went smoothly — we didn’t have any downtime.

Also, they’re very flexible with any type of schedule; we meet with them late at night and chat with them on a one-on-one basis. Every once in a while, we talk about the performance, staff, feedback on developers, and so on.

During development, we’d typically run daily standups with the team in India and walk through the priorities for the day. Then, we’d coordinate with CODE B to make sure everyone was interacting, and the developers kept it tight. During the maintenance period, we meet twice a week at most to talk about bug issues and innovations we want to explore.

Aside from that, we work with them across different channels. All our video conferences are done through Google Meet or Zoom. We track the project through a SCRUM board on Motion.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Aside from getting the job done, they’re able to provide their expertise and share their opinion. My co-founder and I don’t have a technical background, but they weigh the pros and cons of different options and give us more confidence in their work. For example, we could either launch quicker and iterate faster or be much more scalable later on, especially if we plan to launch multiple projects using the same backend.

Overall, it’s great to get their opinion on the options and make an informed decision. The team is very experienced and savvy at what they do.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I think they could’ve done better on internal testing. We’ve experienced some minor delays where we could’ve had some type of feature request, but due to lack of testing in some cases, we could catch a bug. However, they’ve brought in someone to validate all the features and bugs as soon as we communicate the feedback to them.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

It’s crucial to stick out what it’s needed and what should be prioritized, so come in with an action plan on what you expect to accomplish.

I’m the CTO of a startup. We build applications that merchants could install and use to better sell their products on the Shopify platform.

What challenge were you trying to address with CODE B?

My co-founder and I both work full-time and are only able to manage the startup after work hours or on the weekends. That being the case, we needed to augment our workforce with senior-level technical resources who could execute our vision and recognize problems as they come up. That is why we hired CODE B.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We already had customers for our functioning product, and we wanted to improve its performance by reducing the number of bugs and scaling the whole product. I engaged CODE B to conduct a server architecture review. We began by laying out plans for the next several months and discussing how we could solve certain scaling problems.

CODE B has since gone on to resolve some of the problems on our platform, delivering code and communicating with another agency to help tackle all of the issues and enhance the product altogether. We use a microservice for the backend, which is on a nonrelational database. It being a TypeScript and Node project, we also use React for the frontend and a custom graphical setup that allows the backend to communicate with the frontend. We rely heavily on Stripe and Shopify as well since we use a lot of APIs and serverless frameworks.

What is the team composition?

I work with two members from CODE B. I met with Riddhesh (Founder) for the initial discussions and scoping of the work. He takes on the role of a high-level architect and has done some execution in the beginning before passing us on to Dhaval (Co-Founder) who now does the day-to-day execution, delivery, and testing.

How did you come to work with CODE B?

I found Riddhesh’s profile, and it showed that he had seniority and experience with these types of projects. The way he communicated was also very strong, which was one of the things that drew me to CODE B. When we went through an introductory video call, I was very impressed with everything that Riddhesh said and the way that he carried himself, so I decided to hire him.

Our ongoing partnership started in July 2021.

Without CODE B’s assistance, we would not have been able to lay the foundations for the launch of our product. They’ve taken good ownership of their work and I have a lot of confidence in the code that they write. 

How did CODE B perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re primarily an engineering team, so I do most of the project management myself. I set the objectives, create the tickets, and meet with Dhaval once or twice a week to go over tasks, answer questions, and track our progress. 

What I like about working with CODE B is that there’s no language barrier. They’re a very bright team that requires minimal levels of communication or time investment to be very effective. The systems we currently have in place are working well for us. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

The most impressive thing about CODE B is their reliability. With other contractors, I've had to do a lot of code testing and reviewing. With this team, however, I have a high level of trust in the quality and performance of what they build. 

Since our MVP is pretty much a work in progress, there have been times when certain problems have required a large user migration that inevitably affected every endpoint that we have. Those have taken a while, but everything is working out well in the end. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

There aren’t any problems other than the fact that I’ve been so busy and might need to bring in more engineers as well as expand the number of hours they’re putting in. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

As long as you have a broad architectural plan for your product, CODE B can definitely execute that for you. Of course, you will want to come in with a long-term vision since they’re an engineering organization and not a full-service agency.
