• We were building a multi-agent layer across the customer journey for an e-commerce client - a pre-purchase agent for product discovery, a post-purchase agent for order status and returns, and a retention agent for win-backs. The agents only work if the storefront and the data underneath them are solid, so we needed a Shopify partner to own that side: the store build, the B2B and catalog structure, the integrations, and the storefront changes our agents depended on. We do AI, not Shopify, so we brought Binary Future in to own the commerce layer.

They took ownership of the Shopify side of the build. That covered the storefront itself - theme work, product and catalog structure, and the B2B functionality the client needed - plus the custom app and API work that let our agents read and write against the store. They exposed clean endpoints for order status, returns and catalog data, wired the storefront events we needed for the retention agent, and handled the integrations with the client's backend and third-party tools. They also did the storefront-side changes required whenever an agent behavior needed something new, and stayed involved through testing and rollout rather than handing it off at launch.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

It's still early, but the numbers are moving. Conversion rate and AOV are both up roughly 15% since launch, and the client is happy with how it's tracking. From our side the more useful measure is that the commerce layer hasn't been the bottleneck once - every integration point the agents needed was there and working, which is not how these projects usually go.

Consistent and predictable. They kept a clear cadence, flagged dependencies early, and turned around storefront changes fast when the agent work needed them. When a request of ours would have caused a problem downstream, they said so instead of quietly building it.

Binary Future thinks about the commerce side as a system rather than a set of tasks. The data structure and API work they did meant our agents had something reliable to sit on, which is usually the hardest part of these builds and the part most Shopify teams don't consider their problem.

A third party supplier provides an integration offering content, pricing and order processing. We are a very small team, and so introducing as much automation as possible is essential to operating. An integration was required in order to get access to thousands of new products and many new brands.

Pricing is listed in USD, and so some work was done to ensure prices were correctly in GBP.

We simply could not have listed that many products without integration.

Binary Future provided excellent communication throughout. They provided clear timelines, Gantt charts and updates on progress, as well as clear reasons for any timeline movement. Where there were questions, BF always brought well structured queries with clear and sensible options, and were open to discussions on approaches. I feel the difference with BF against other providers is that BF clearly come from an e-commerce and business background - they are not developing for developments sake; they really focus on solving the problems presented.

Yes, for a first project together I was extremely pleased with the level of support and expertise offered. As a small company we really appreciate a good level of project management and business planning from a development agency.

I’m the digital director and UX analyst for Circa Creative Studios. We provide graphic design and website development services to small and medium-sized businesses. In my role, I oversee and direct our UX design and development work, and I provide Google Analytics management and SEO for our clients.

What challenge were you trying to address with Binary Future?

We got a client who needed a Shopify website. We usually develop everything in-house, but this was the first time we dealt with a big Shopify site. Thus, we hired an external contractor to build the site.

This person did a good job building the site, focusing mainly on the layout. However, we needed to add some custom features to enhance our customer’s experience or how they would manage the site. More specifically, we needed to develop a custom multi-ship app to integrate it into the site, and our contractor couldn’t help us with that, so we started looking for someone else to complete the project.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Binary Future is helping us finish the Shopify development project we’re undertaking. Among the complex features that they’re helping us develop is a custom multi-ship app for the frontend and a FedEx API integration.

Whenever our client received a big order for multiple directions, they had to split the items manually and create different delivery labels. Thus, we tasked Binary Future with finding a solution in which users could order multiple items from our client and enter different delivery addresses for each one instead of ordering each item individually. That’s what they’ve been working on.

What is the team composition?

We mainly work with Mike (Senior Project Manager) and a developer.

How did you come to work with Binary Future?

We found them on Upwork. I’m from Ukraine myself, so it was very important for me to support Ukrainian developers during the Russian Invasion. Other companies ended partnerships with their Ukrainian service providers due to the high risks of service interruptions. However, our project didn’t have tight deadlines, so we decided to give Binary Future the opportunity to work on this project as a way of supporting local companies.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together around July 2022, and our engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Binary Future is very professional, and they’re doing what it takes to complete the project. For example, we’ve assigned them tasks that have grown because they find gaps and make suggestions to improve the UX. Other developers usually don’t think about users, but Binary Future is always finding solutions for user-related things we didn’t even think of before. The website is yet to be launched, so we don’t have any metrics on the impact of their work. Still, we’ve had a great experience overall.

How did Binary Future perform from a project management standpoint?

Binary Future’s communication is great. Initially, we communicated in Ukrainian because we’re from the same country, but when one of my coworkers joined the project, they started communicating in English perfectly.

Additionally, Binary Future sends updates and delivers assets on time. Whenever something is taking longer than expected, they also send updates to keep us abreast of the situation. Still, despite all the challenges in Ukraine, they’ve never missed a deadline.

As for collaboration tools, Binary Future uses a dashboard to break down tasks and manage the project in detail. Still, I mostly communicate with them via email, which is enough for me.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Binary Future’s development skills are outstanding. We’ve given them very complex tasks that, according to our initial research and other developers’ comments, aren’t possible. However, they’ve taken those tasks and come back a couple of days later with a simple solution.

Our service was expanding exponentially and we couldn’t develop fast enough to meet our deadlines. We also needed to refactor much of our codebase that was written early on in our company and was designed to “just get it out”. We hired Binary Future to help with these tasks.

We worked with several firms over our history and expanded our relationship with Binary Future after a very successful engagement with one developer.

Binary Future worked like part of our internal development team. Any new features or design changes were discussed with them and they helped define scope of work and implementation using Slack as primary communication platform. The project itself included both Laravel and Vue.js technologies

We grew our relationship from 1 to 2 developers over the course of the project and 1 of those developers also acted a Project manager.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

After our refactoring and introduction of better coding practices we saw the speed of delivery of features increase significantly. We also saw a measurable improvement in the stability and performance of our application.

We had regular conversations over Slack and as needed meetings to better understand and discuss features being worked on. All code was committed to a Git repo and the CTO performed code review with comments.

The seamless integration with our internal dev team. It really felt like the team was working as a single unit and all in sync with each other.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

We would have liked to see stronger time estimates for implementing feature. Part of this was our fault for not always requiring an estimate up front or having a feature lacking full design spec.
