 This multi-year project, spanning over 23,000 km² of the Al-Ula oasis and surrounding valleys, aimed to create a comprehensive 3D GIS framework for documenting, preserving, and virtually reconstructing thousands of historical and archaeological sites — from Paleolithic settlements dating back 200,000 years to Lihyanite tombs and Nabatean ruins like those at Mada’in Saleh. 
Our goal was to integrate cutting-edge geospatial technologies to produce high-resolution digital twins, enabling non-invasive analysis, virtual tourism, and long-term conservation planning. Ai Geo Navigators Private Limited handled data collection, both ground and aerial, GIS integration, and 3D modeling. 
The team deployed a fleet of multi-rotor UAVs (e.g., customized 3DR Y6 hexacopters with 24MP Sony Nex sensors) for low-altitude flights at 30–100 meters, capturing over 10,000 images per session with 80% overlap to ensure robust SfM processing. They handled the logistics flawlessly — coordinating with RCU permits, navigating the desert’s variable winds, and even training our on-site team on real-time flight planning via their proprietary GIS dashboard. 
Ground truthing followed with high-density LiDAR sweeps (up to 50x50 meter grids), generating digital elevation models (DEMs) and orthophotos that revealed hidden features, like faint caravan routes buried under sediment. 
All raw data was processed in-Kingdom, adhering to GEOSA’s data sovereignty rules, and fed into ArcGIS Pro for spatial analysis layers: thematic maps overlaying site typologies, erosion risk assessments, and 3D visualizations exportable to Unity for VR walkthroughs.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

AI geonavigators suggested hybrid workflows, like using structure from motion(SfM) algorithms to stitch overlapping of drones in to dense point clouds and then aligned them with ground based Faro LiDAR scans for subcentimeter accuracy, this customization was game changing. Their GIS framework was dynamic LOD 3 level digital twin platform that allowed us to query databases interactively.
